One tip to ensure your GPS is running at top speed is to keep the trail logs to a minimum, on most GPS units storing the track / trail logs uses memory and like a computer this can cause the unit (especially the older ones) to run slow. Another point - plenty of us fish at night, apart from the lack of sight (to see naviagtion lights etc) there isnt a big difference between fog and darkness, infact once you get out of the hardbour not much is light up anyway (thinking of pot bouysm groynes and headlands etc)

Some good posts and thoughts. Mike's especially. Fog doesnt worry me too much - it aint nice but provided your set up and confident and safe then it neednt ruin the day. In a small boat you have the MK1 eyeball, MK11 ear drum and speed and manouvribility to help, bigger boats might not see you but you can hear and see then easier as your not in an enclosed wheelhouse. I once came 25 miles back from the ripps in a pea souper with AJ... we just took it slow, kept a good look out and regular compass and plotter bearings. In a bigger boat we loose the above... but gain with the extra toys eg. radar - to be honest though I'm not sure what Id rather have - toys are great but often you cant beat the human senses of sight and sound. Ive probably had more fog in the spring summer than winter too!

It's coming up to that time of year when JV's Volvo will need a service, and I think we are due a leg off and seals etc full monty overhaul... Anyway she is just past 2 years old so out of even the extended warrenty, so we dont have an obligation to use Salterns as a main dealer. What or who do you inboard diesel chaps recommend?

La Mamma's is good - very old school cliche Italian syle, but good. Seafood is always hard.... Alun J often says the Ship In Distress in Christchurch is good - local seafood landed at Mudeford. Storm in Christchurch is also meant to be good, but like Loch Fyne - a little pretentious and pricey. Personally I prefer the food a little simpler and less fussy and the setting more realistic - if you can find a little inn tucked away in a cove somewhere selling hand dived scallops or seared fillets of line caught dorset bass without charging liked a wounded rhino where you can sit by a fire and relax then to me thats heaven! I think it's easy for us boaters with engines to look at this as fool hardy and stupid. Sure it wasnt an ideal situation, but everything Ive read about these guys has been very sensible and well prepped. For one the fact that they called the paddle in on Ch16 before they left was textbook - when I did my VHF course this was taught as std proceedure before any trip on any size vessel yet Ive never been on a club boat when anyone has... That said - I think there is always the right tool for the job, and whilst lines get blured and people push bounadries - 16.00hrs in the Portland Race in winter in a Kayak isnt a place I'd want to be!

Blimey - glad they are OK. The Race isnt a nice place to be in a charter boat let alone a kayak!...

Great to see such a turnout for todays comp - with reasonable weather too after the artic temps, snow and ice we have had of late. As usual it was a mixed bag, many really struggled, and not one particular mark seemed favourite. Plenty of chat on the radio, but seemed to focus around keeping warm in the wheelhouse, and cooked breakfasts with mugs of steaming tea! Alun J - must take credit for putting together a superb hamper, thanks Al. And finally, lets not forget the dedication of this comp - the first time we have fished this as the Bob Horne memorial... Gents, Dont forget it's the Bob Horne memorial comp on Sunday - format is best specimen flounder, and as usual Alun has put together a stonking hamper for the best fish! The weather looks fair, so if you can resist the lure of cod outside the harbour get your name down here! It's an ideal oppertunity for some fresh air after the Christmas excess!! My original timings arent great so we will fish from 8am to 3pm and I'll close the scales at 4pm. The weigh in will be in the car park at Baiter next to the slipway. 1.) Adam F - JV

Good question - and an easy one for me... Building JV - 7 months 3 days.... and then standing on the breakwater in Alderney a few months after we launched her - watching he sat on the mooring... amazing!

Sorry Ive not been a round much lately chaps - life is pretty hectic at the moment! Sunday isnt looking too good chaps! In fact I'm struggling to see anything good about Sunday - gale force winds, a -15c windchill and snow! Whilst the comp is in the harbour, launching in a gale is pretty dangerous.... I;m doubtful if the comp will be on, but I'll make a final call this evening to give you as much notice as possible to go Xmas shopping with the wife!!

Well... I HATE you all! Instead of spending a day afloat after a winter spotted beauty, I spent last night and today looking after a very poorly 1 yr old with chronic ear ache... what fun... Anyway! Looks like you lot had a good comp? please post your results here: 1)

Comp POSTPONED due to poor weather - we will try again on Sunday 5th November

Here I am... battled the snow and ice and rush hour traffic and just walked int he door at 7pm... The verdict is predictably easy.... Sunday is POSTPONED - the forecast is looking rather poo - so lets move it 1 week to next Sunday and hope for the best. Adam

I going to buck the trend here... I havent carried a spare on JV all year. My main set up is a 7.5kg, the spare was a 5kg - which I have used and can hold the boat reasonably well. My issue was one of weight - yes even on a bigger boat like JV, I found that I'd started doubling up on everything and it was getting silly. I took the spare off when we went to Alderney as I thought one of the others who have a spare worst case scenario. If I ever lost an anchor I'd just come home, pick up a pot buoy or fish on the drift. If I was going specifically for a day's anchor fishing I'll pop the spare back on (eg congering) What I do carry, and a few of you have said you dont bother - is a fully working spare Alderney ring set-up - I have needed it and leant it to others several times over the years. Just my thoughts on it.
