Re. food and drink - on the last trip we broke the tradition of going to the Maris Hall for the 1st night.... crap fishing then ensued for 3 days... I wont be making that mistake again! Maris Hall all the way for the first night - well hung pepper stakes, fishermans soup and mountains of Guiness all the way!

Whilst it is possible (anything is possible!) this is a BIG trip for an 18' Raider. Tom is right - the sea mid channel isnt worse than the bay... often - in fact the sea is different - less choppy like the coastal waters can be, bigger longer seas. The sea conditions around the island are usually dictated by the tide anyway. Regardless of sea conditions - the saltly old sea dogs always state you cant beat LOA (length overall) when at sea for good sea keeping. It is a 4 hour crossing in a single run assuming you can cruise at 15 knots - often you cant... coming back on the 2nd trip last year it was a lovely day but the tide put up a nasty sea and we had 2 hours of 10-12 knots MAX... not fun! Ive also come back in a F5/6 westerly... not fun! Saying that Ive also run back over at 25 knots on a sheet of glass!! My point it this is very variable! Fuel is an issue for the outboard boats - there is no marina in Alderney, you moor on swinging moorings - no fuel in the harbour - you need to walk or taxi into town to the petrol station. Tomo did it last year - so it's possible but another consideration. Hope this doesnt sound like nagging - but have a good think before you take an 18' Raider on a 350 mile round trip across the channel. Give me a call if you want more info. Adam

Always sad to see a boat leave the club.. I understand where youre coming from re. the finacials vs. amount of use - certianly it's crossed my mind a bit over the past year, with a little one, and the possibility of us going down to one wage.... ... but then the thought is quickly banished! I prefer not to weigh up the costs too much, I did 25 days on her last year - not a massive amount but roughly a day a fortnight, tough to put a price on the the pleasure I get from JV. As you say skippering is all part of the fun. Wont the other syndicate members buy you out? Anyway, best of luck with whatever you decide.

The Run's a bit busier with other boaters than mid channel! With the water temp this time of year I'd be wearing a drysuit if I was crossing in an open boat - even a floatation suit would give you minutes rather than hours! I'm really surpised that the marina would let you even go alone - the delivery cost should include 2 crew! Anyway - none of my business. Have a safe trip!

Polishing??? (shudder! ) What do you boys use? Personally I go around with the electric polisher with the foam head on and use Farecla G3 as a cutting compound. Then round again with Autoglym Polish / or carnuba wax on a cloth, before buffing the whole lot up with the electric polisher and lambswool head - takes a good 2/3 hours to do the whole boat!

15 weeks to go!!! Plenty of jobs to do! Engine service, boats needs a good clean and polish, cutting board to fit, stainless bow roller needs re-welding, But I cant wait!! Why doesnt the club look at buying this as per the last meeting?? I know we said new would be better, but it looks like many man hours has gone into getting this kitted out to this spec - something hard to do with a new one? Just a thought.

I agree with Tom - worth keeping an ear to the ground to see what the charters are catching before fixing a date so far ahead - Ive been out in Feb and not even had a pluck - but Ive been 25 miles SW of Portland bill in mid Feb and had to stop fishing as we had too many pollock! For my money, I'd want to be in that kind of area - a long way from Poole - even longer from Xchurch.

Yes, as it stands at the moment the plan is to leave on Thurs 12th and return Sun 15th - as for concrete, well it's as firm as the weather allows!

Can really recommend the Broadband Radar from Lowrance we have on JV. I'm not a techy - but it's easy for someone like me to use, clear and can pick up pot buoys on a calm day.
