  1. JV now sits on a trailer - she is now dry stored. My motivation is if I can find a long lunmch break away from the office in Poole - sat at work or polishing the boat!
  2. A dodgy pre-owned french patio door on a hull with a dodgy ticker of an engine....
  3. Im after a piece of white HDPE or Nylon6 board 300x450x12mm Basically a heavy duty catering cutting board for JV - I can get one online for about
  4. Always sad to see a boat leave the club.. I understand where youre coming from re. the finacials vs. amount of use - certianly it's crossed my mind a bit over the past year, with a little one, and the possibility of us going down to one wage.... ... but then the thought is quickly banished! I prefer not to weigh up the costs too much, I did 25 days on her last year - not a massive amount but roughly a day a fortnight, tough to put a price on the the pleasure I get from JV. As you say skippering is all part of the fun. Wont the other syndicate members buy you out? Anyway, best of luck with whatever you decide.
  5. That's intresting? Never seen a coloured polish?
  6. The Run's a bit busier with other boaters than mid channel! With the water temp this time of year I'd be wearing a drysuit if I was crossing in an open boat - even a floatation suit would give you minutes rather than hours! I'm really surpised that the marina would let you even go alone - the delivery cost should include 2 crew! Anyway - none of my business. Have a safe trip!
  7. Polishing??? (shudder! ) What do you boys use? Personally I go around with the electric polisher with the foam head on and use Farecla G3 as a cutting compound. Then round again with Autoglym Polish / or carnuba wax on a cloth, before buffing the whole lot up with the electric polisher and lambswool head - takes a good 2/3 hours to do the whole boat!
  8. Yeah that's all I can see - Blue Island flying back to Southampton for
  9. Yep - maybe. Depending on cost of flight and what day.

  11. 15 weeks to go!!! Plenty of jobs to do! Engine service, boats needs a good clean and polish, cutting board to fit, stainless bow roller needs re-welding, But I cant wait!! Ive got crew sorted - the dream team from 2010 - me, Al and Rob F. Accomidation sorted! Need to stock up on a bit of tackle....
  12. Thanks all for your support so far - it's really appreciated. The decision gets made on the 4th March
  13. Well nearly!.... I'd like to appeal to all club members and readers of this site to help me and my few neighbours. North Dorset Council have submitted a planning application to build an 8 site
  14. Well done Brian and team - a great job. I'll try and look at pulling some stats off in the coming months...
  15. Why doesnt the club look at buying this as per the last meeting?? I know we said new would be better, but it looks like many man hours has gone into getting this kitted out to this spec - something hard to do with a new one? Just a thought.
  16. I agree with Tom - worth keeping an ear to the ground to see what the charters are catching before fixing a date so far ahead - Ive been out in Feb and not even had a pluck - but Ive been 25 miles SW of Portland bill in mid Feb and had to stop fishing as we had too many pollock! For my money, I'd want to be in that kind of area - a long way from Poole - even longer from Xchurch.
  17. Yes, as it stands at the moment the plan is to leave on Thurs 12th and return Sun 15th - as for concrete, well it's as firm as the weather allows!

    Broadband Radar

Can really recommend the Broadband Radar from Lowrance we have on JV. I'm not a techy - but it's easy for someone like me to use, clear and can pick up pot buoys on a calm day.

    Fog Caution!

One tip to ensure your GPS is running at top speed is to keep the trail logs to a minimum, on most GPS units storing the track / trail logs uses memory and like a computer this can cause the unit (especially the older ones) to run slow. Another point - plenty of us fish at night, apart from the lack of sight (to see naviagtion lights etc) there isnt a big difference between fog and darkness, infact once you get out of the hardbour not much is light up anyway (thinking of pot bouysm groynes and headlands etc)

    Fog Caution!

Some good posts and thoughts. Mike's especially. Fog doesnt worry me too much - it aint nice but provided your set up and confident and safe then it neednt ruin the day. In a small boat you have the MK1 eyeball, MK11 ear drum and speed and manouvribility to help, bigger boats might not see you but you can hear and see then easier as your not in an enclosed wheelhouse. I once came 25 miles back from the ripps in a pea souper with AJ... we just took it slow, kept a good look out and regular compass and plotter bearings. In a bigger boat we loose the above... but gain with the extra toys eg. radar - to be honest though I'm not sure what Id rather have - toys are great but often you cant beat the human senses of sight and sound. Ive probably had more fog in the spring summer than winter too!
  22. Anyone got one lying around before I part with cash for a new one?
  23. It's coming up to that time of year when JV's Volvo will need a service, and I think we are due a leg off and seals etc full monty overhaul... Anyway she is just past 2 years old so out of even the extended warrenty, so we dont have an obligation to use Salterns as a main dealer. What or who do you inboard diesel chaps recommend?
  24. La Mamma's is good - very old school cliche Italian syle, but good. Seafood is always hard.... Alun J often says the Ship In Distress in Christchurch is good - local seafood landed at Mudeford. Storm in Christchurch is also meant to be good, but like Loch Fyne - a little pretentious and pricey. Personally I prefer the food a little simpler and less fussy and the setting more realistic - if you can find a little inn tucked away in a cove somewhere selling hand dived scallops or seared fillets of line caught dorset bass without charging liked a wounded rhino where you can sit by a fire and relax then to me thats heaven! Let us know where you go!
  25. I think it's easy for us boaters with engines to look at this as fool hardy and stupid. Sure it wasnt an ideal situation, but everything Ive read about these guys has been very sensible and well prepped. For one the fact that they called the paddle in on Ch16 before they left was textbook - when I did my VHF course this was taught as std proceedure before any trip on any size vessel yet Ive never been on a club boat when anyone has... That said - I think there is always the right tool for the job, and whilst lines get blured and people push bounadries - 16.00hrs in the Portland Race in winter in a Kayak isnt a place I'd want to be!
