Member Removed Posted October 10, 2010 Report Posted October 10, 2010 Hi new to club so hello to every one! I am looking for some where to keep my boat (raider 16 Cuddy) in poole harbour. I have had the boat on my drive but feel it would be easier if she was on a berth or even a dry stack ? Any ideas? Quote
Graham Nash Posted October 10, 2010 Report Posted October 10, 2010 (edited) Hi Jim, I have searched just about everywhere recently and have settled for putting my Raider 18 at Rockley Park. Costs just over 2k a year to keep the boat there on its trailer and they launch and retreave whenever you want. I am hoping to be able to use her much more often now I dont have to mess about trailing, launching and retreaving her myself. Incidentally they also do dry stack, but getting the trailer out of my yard was a bonus to me. Edited October 10, 2010 by Graham Nash Quote
fisherman1055 Posted October 10, 2010 Report Posted October 10, 2010 Hi Jim I keep my Merry Fisher 695 at Rockley as well the price is just over Quote
Adam F Posted October 10, 2010 Report Posted October 10, 2010 Unless you're got money to chuck around I'd keep it on your drive! IMO paying to store a 16' boat when youve got space to store it is a waste. Sure they will launch it for you etc, but how hard is a 16' boat to launch and retreave? Most marinas charge for 7m as a min, so I'd have thought you'll be looking at Quote

I have had the boat on my drive but feel it would be easier if she was on a berth or even a dry stack ? Any ideas? Unless you're dripping in cash ? Keep it on the trailer, much more versatile! and safer !! (I just look out of my lounge window to see if my boat is still there) How many times per year will you use it ? Compare cost of storage/mooriing fees to carpark/launch fees. How much boat fuel would you use to get to Xchurch Ledge or Kimmeridge from Poole ? BIG IF you get out 20 times per year @ 2k storage/mooring thats Quote
Coddy Posted October 11, 2010 Report Posted October 11, 2010 Would agree with what has been said but I would add that buying a launching pass at Cobbs Quay at approx Quote

Simon Posted December 18, 2010 Report Posted December 18, 2010 Hi guys, this thread is just what I was looking for. After my aborted attempt to buy a Sea Tremlett about 18 months ago, I had almost given up. However, I've finally done it! Just got myself a white shark 205 and need to decide by tomorrow where I'm going to keep her. For my first year I've narrowed it down to Cobbs Pontoon F ( Quote
codpiece Posted December 18, 2010 Report Posted December 18, 2010 For what it is worth,I have had my 16ft Longliner on moorings at Xch,and on a pontoon at Cobbs, Bloody site cheaper and safer at home, also less fuss in kitting it up, (radio, plotter)etc. It takes me 20 mins to get her ready filled with fishing geer and goodies etc, and coupled to my freelander, 20 mins to xch 10 mins max to launch and park, and my wallet stays healthier, no trips day after day to check she is ok so fuel reasonable, If I want to work on her or run the engine up etc i walk out of my house with a nice cup of tea, climb aboard and play for 5 mins, one other small point, no anti fouling!! I have got a clean bottom all the time!!!! Derek Quote
Fugazi Posted December 19, 2010 Report Posted December 19, 2010 The first year I had my Raider (2005) 18 it was on F Pontoon at Cobbs @ Quote
Graham Nash Posted December 19, 2010 Report Posted December 19, 2010 I personally find exactly the opposite to Gordon. I find it so much easier to phone the boat yard and have the boat in the water ready for me when I get there. I park a few meters away and load up then I am away. On the return I tie the boat to the pontoon and remove whatever i dont want to leave, I then drive off home for my shower (or whatever). When I was trailing I found it all such a hag (especially in the summer), unlocking the rusty brakes, manouvering my boat out of my yard and negotiating past the inconsiderate parking down a narrow back street of Poole. Then fighting for a place on the slip (hoping there was enough water to launch) and then trying to get the idiot that was tying his boat to his trailer smack bang in the middle of the slip to move out of the way, then there was trying to find a parking spot. The return could be twice as stressful when there were millions of jet skiers all anchored in the slip way and there was always someone who couldnt get his boat back onto his trailer causing a massive back log. Having said that ..... it was never dull Quote
Simon Posted December 19, 2010 Report Posted December 19, 2010 (edited) Thanks guys, I do like the safety, convenience and cost saving of trailering however it's just not an option for me at the moment. I've got a small drive and it would mean parking both our cars on the road. I'll never get that past my better half (Although I will have to find somewhere inexpensive to store the trailer - any ideas?). I may trailer in the future but launching her with a 2 & 5 year old may be a challenge at the moment! I'm going to bite the bullet for my first year so that I can hopefully pass on the bug to the Mrs. I really need to keep it fun and easy. Reading various comments I'm going to go with dry stacking, but I can't decide between Cobbs & Rockley. I will speak with them again tomorrow. Does anybody know if they charge on hull length or LOA? I do like cobbs but rockley are offering a 10% discount if paid by a single payment. That makes it Edited December 19, 2010 by Simon Quote
Graham Nash Posted December 19, 2010 Report Posted December 19, 2010 (edited) Simon, I was going for dry stack at Rockley but was not sure what to do with the trailer. The guys down there suggested I leave the boat on the trailer and they launch it as normal. It works a treat for me. They normally leave around 4 in the winter (although I doubt they will stay that late today, they were gone by 2 yesterday). If you want night fishing you just arrange it in advance and they drop the boat in for you, then remove it the following day. By the way I think they charge me on hull length and I paid in a one lump sum (they certainly dont charge me on the length of the trailer) Edited December 19, 2010 by Graham Nash Quote
Stuie Posted December 19, 2010 Report Posted December 19, 2010 I'm on dry stack at Cobbs and they charge by hull length. They may well do deals on price. My 5 metre Alaska comes in a little over Quote
Maverick Martin Posted December 19, 2010 Report Posted December 19, 2010 Rockley is ok, the cheapest in the harbour but furthest from the harbour entrance so you do need to factor in a little extra fuel in your costings. That said the yard has a new manager and seems to be improving. Martin Quote
gjb Posted December 19, 2010 Report Posted December 19, 2010 I have my boat at cobbs and use it much more than when i towed it , as i live in salisbury i spent most of the day towing and waiting to get it on and off at baiter now i can walk down the pontoon start up and go great graham Quote
Simon Posted December 19, 2010 Report Posted December 19, 2010 Thanks for the heads up Sal. Say you arrived back at 2.00am, would you feel it's safe to leave little sal on their pontoon until the morning? Not that I'm likely to do this often but it may happen. I think I've managed to sort the trailer issue, which is a big bonus to me as I do like the idea of leaving her off the ground level. Thanks Stuie, if I could get cobbs down to close to Quote
Graham Nash Posted December 19, 2010 Report Posted December 19, 2010 Re coming back half way through the night ..... I have come back after they have shut and have left my boat on the pontoon a few times and have had no problems. I have also had them drop it in the water the evening before i use it if i want to start off before they get in. It did worry me at first but I have seen some MUCH BETTER boats on the pontoon than mine (one of which was on it last night) and have heard of no problems. Quote
Maverick Martin Posted December 19, 2010 Report Posted December 19, 2010 Hi Simon it can be a little confusing as the previous and current managers name is/was Andy however the new Andy has been there about 10 months. If you keep your boat on stack and store in any yard you will have the same issues re early start or late return as none of them work 24 hour. Rockley do during the busy months now stay on later so that boats for the most part do not have to raft up on the pontoon, much better than it used to be. I came near to moving from Rockley last year due to the rafting up issues experienced so much happier with their current methods. In the winter months staff go home a little earlier but then it's only mad fishermen that go out out of hours at this time of year so still no problem. Rockley shut for part of the Christmas period but have now put my boat and others on the pontoon so they can be used over the holiday period and I am happy with this as it at least lets me use my boat when I want. If there is an issue I have been assured that if I call the yard the managers phone number will be available and he or his staff will respond. Not sure what other yards do in this situation Am I happy? as happy as I would be anywhere else and will be even happier if all things promised come to fruition. Martin Quote
Simon Posted December 20, 2010 Report Posted December 20, 2010 Thanks Sal, I accept our point about the "MUCH BETTER" boats, but it's my baby ( first boat) and I can't help feeling a bit paranoid/unsure! lol Anyway thanks for the reassurance. Thanks for your balanced view Martin, to be honest, the Mrs was edging things towards cobbs however I now think rockley is a much more likely option. We'll see what tomorrow brings. Thanks again guys. Quote
Jim Posted December 20, 2010 Report Posted December 20, 2010 I had never heard of a White Shark. Googled it for a " Butchers " It looks a bit quick Simon. Glad things are looking up a bit. Jim Quote
