Trust backs Sussex netting and trawling bylaws The Sussex Inshore Fishery and Conservation Authority have put forward new bylaws for netting and trawling along the Sussex coast. The proposals include excluding trawling out to 4km in order to allow kelp beds off the coast of Littlehampton to recover. The Angling Trust will be responding to the bylaws and we are encouraging our members and clubs to do the same. Details of how to respond to proposal In conversation with David Mitchell Listen to the Angling Trust’s Head of Marine David Mitchell talking in detail about the work of the Angling Trust and European Anglers Alliance on this Tommy’s Outdoors podcast recorded earlier this month. HPMA Meeting with Benyon Angling Trust representatives met former fisheries minister Richard Benyon last month to discuss the proposal for Highly Protected Marine Areas (HPMAs) around the UK and their impact on sea angling. Mr Benyon is chairing a panel of experts looking into what HPMAs would contribute to the UK’s marine protection. Chris Holloway, chairman of Angling Trust Wyvern; Peter Vanallen, deputy chairman; Phill Higgins, chairman of the Professional Boatman's Association; and Angling Trust director Tim Macpherson were among those attending the meeting. Started the session at the turning circle in the harbour where we had suicidal small bass and a good red mullet. Then to the castle where we moored up - a slow start but came good when the tide dropped and we had some stunning ballan action I managed three good ones - best 3lb 3 and Ken the better on at 3lb 11. Early finish as out with friends to the Crown for a good meal. A grand day out.

8.30 am left Cobbs with Geoff Lambert - went to swash and drifterd for plaice on last of the flood and caught - nil Anchored on ray mark and pestered by small bream but caught dogs and a smoothie as well as spider crabs. Mackerel head fooled the bream and landed a double figure undulate on the downtider. Another bite on a bream skeleton and brought nothing to the surface but the skeleton. I saw a brown shape on the surface and dropped the skeleton into the water and a cuttlefish shot across the surface and latched onto it. Managed to net it ok. Thats two on successive Sundays. (All we need now is the cod) Anyway after a little while I noticed the uptide had a big slack line and after a tussle another double undulate came aboard - on a slightly straightened size 1 SWC. Tide eased and the wind got up a little so being whimpish we made back to Cobbs and after re-fuel and wash down joined the junior competition celebrations.

Kept Looby 4 company off Old Harry and then a second mark further East - this was where I managed a couple of smalleyed rays - biggest 5lb 2oz. We had plenty of other species - dogs, straps a nice tope to Glen and a cuttlefish for me too, A lovely day out.

Minimum legal size limbo as EU rule change drops recreational fishing Earlier this month the Angling Trust discovered that a recent change to an EU regulation meant that the EU’s Minimum Conservation Reference Sizes (MCRS) -- the minimum size of fish species that can be sold commercially – do not automatically apply to recreational fishing. Some IFCAs have brought in emergency bylaws to correct the situation while others are assessing the situation. In the meantime we are encouraging all anglers to check with their local IFCA and to adhere to any local bylaws. Find out more Do you fish for wrasse in the south of England? Experienced anglers fishing from specially selected ‘support vessels’ will now be able to target bluefin tuna as part of the ThunnusUK bluefin tagging programme this year. The Angling Trust lobbied for anglers’ experience to contribute to the project and support vessels carrying anglers with experience of catching tuna will now be supporting the tagging vessel. In addition, pressure from the Angling Trust has also helped expand the project from England into Wales and now Scotland with tags being provided for bluefin to be tagged in Scottish waters for the first time. With a total of £2,000 of prizes to be won it’s the event of the year for small boat anglers! Find out more Species of the month: Blue Shark Blue sharks are summer visitors to the coasts of south west England and Wales. These sleek predators get their name from their metallic blue colour and can grow to over 200lb. Virtually all fish caught by anglers are returned. They are unpleasant to eat but are caught in huge number commercially by longline fisheries in the Bay of Biscay where their fins are sold to the far east. The Angling Trust is working with the Shark Angling Club of Great Britain on a number of shark fishing issues and David Mitchell, the Angling Trust’s Head of Marine, likes to practice what he preaches and caught his first (and one of the smallest!) blue shark fishing from Cornwall this month. Out with Glen today - steady start - 9am. Decided to try the harbour for the day and moored up off Hamworthy. Straight into small bass and a few black bream. Ballans and a baillons put in an appearance then Glens new spinning rod took on an alarming hoop. Net at the ready to see three scad of around 1lb each coming aboard. That was a surprise. Then it was back to catching small bass interspersed with several gobies. A lovely day out with shelter from the gusty breeze all day.
