News Update March 15th, 2022 Angling Community urged to contribute to Ukraine Appeal In response to the worsening humanitarian crisis in Ukraine, following the brutal attacks on civilians by Russian forces, the Angling Trust has set up a fundraising initiative for those in the British angling community who wish to help. Anglers for Ukraine was launched at The Big One fishing show in Farnborough with anglers contributing to a bucket collection. One generous exhibitor, fishing brand and retailer OUTLAW PRO, donated all takings from their stand, totalling around £10,000, to the appeal giving it a flying start. The company will be doing the same at the Essex Carp Show on 26-27th March. Carp legend and TV personality Ali Hamidi came to offer his support and top Ukrainian angler Serhii Vasylchyshyn has expressed gratitude on behalf of his fellow countrymen. UK-based Serhii Vasylchyshyn, from the Ukrainian Sport Fishing Federation, said: “It means a great deal to us Ukrainians to know that our fellow anglers in the UK are helping us in this time of great need. Our country is at war following a vicious and unprovoked invasion that is killing innocent civilians and destroying our towns and cities. The Ukrainian people are bravely resisting but they need every assistance possible.” Ian Smith, Managing Director from OUTLAW PRO. said: “The heartbreaking scenes that we are seeing coming from Ukraine are unimaginable in modern day society. It seems that speaking to so many people this last week that the invasion has affected countless people in the UK personally with friends and family that are living in that part of the world. "It’s at times like this we have to do whatever we can to try and ease the suffering of those directly affected by this tragedy. We started our efforts to raise money at the The Big One show at Farnborough but we will continue to raise money in one form or another for as long as the conflict continues. It’s just the right thing to do." All monies collected will be given directly to the British Red Cross Ukrainian Crisis Appeal to which the Government has pledged to match fund up to £20 million. An online donation route has been established via a special Just Giving page here. Last week, the Angling Trust supported the decision taken by the Confédération Internationale de la Pêche Sportive (CIPS) – the body that oversees competitive international angling - to exclude Russia and Belarus from all international competitions in solidarity with both the people of Ukraine and Ukrainian anglers who regularly compete in international competitions. Martin Salter, Head of Policy at the Angling Trust, added: “The scenes on our TV screens are almost too much to bear with over 1.5 million people bombed or driven out of their homes. The scale of human suffering is appalling and will only get worse. Sporting boycotts, including the recent ban on Russian and Belarusian angling teams, along with economic sanctions and direct military aid, all have a part to play in trying to bring this bloody conflict to an end. However, we are pleased to be able to offer a direct route for the angling community to play its part in helping to raise funds for much needed medical supplies, food and shelter for those innocent and terrified civilians who are literally running for their lives.” Other fundraising initiatives planned by Angling Trust staff and members of the Voluntary Bailiff Service (VBS) include the sale of 1,000 special lapel pins branded with the “Anglers for Ukraine” logo. They are aiming to raise at least £5,000 by asking for donations of £5. Other initiatives by angling clubs and the tackle trade that donate to the appeal can be publicised through the Angling Trust. Anglers are being urged to donate whatever they can by visiting the Just Giving page or through local fundraising initiatives. Your Sea News Update March 2022 Are Sea Anglers Second Class Citizens? Save Our Seabass have launched a campaign to protest the decision for no increase in the bag limit for 2022 and no extension of the recreational bass season to match the commercial sector. They are inviting anglers to write to their MPs and get their voices heard. READ MORE Care About Litter? Volunteer with Us! The Angling Trust has received government funding through the Fisheries and Seafood Scheme to recruit a volunteer network across England, organise beach cleans and deploy Anglers National Line Recycling Scheme bins at key sea angling sites across the country. We're looking for enthusiastic people keen to make a difference and get involved. This is an important question! Understanding how anglers may differ in their beliefs, attitudes and behaviours can help to understand how recreational angling can be best integrated into the future management of our seas and oceans. Adam Fisher, a postgraduate researcher at the Countryside and Community Research Institute (CCRI) at the University of Gloucestershire is carrying out a programme of work exploring diversity among recreational sea anglers in England and Wales to inform the future of UK fisheries management. A key part of the research involves engaging with anglers through an online survey to gather important information that can help classify different types of angler. In support of this work, we invite recreational sea anglers to take part in this research and complete the survey by clicking the button below. This is a real opportunity to take part in research that will be shared with policymakers, therefore informing the future of angling policy! In return for taking part in the online survey, which will take about 10-15 minutes, you will have the opportunity to win £100 in vouchers for an angling store of your choice. Sign up for the diary today Angling Trust Sea Angling Regional Voluntary Group (RVG) On Wednesday 19th January 2022 the group met for the second time and is building its membership with all but the North-West of England currently represented. It has now agreed terms of reference ensuring focus upon the needs of the RSA community in the coming years. During the meeting, building upon competition and participation development was keenly supported. The value that angling has offered in supporting mental health issues was also identified and seen as something the group can continue to build upon. At this time of the year angler welfare when fishing from isolated and rocky marks was also recognised and seen as part of wider health and safety issues the group can develop. Short presentations were detailed on funding achieved already by the Angling Trust from the MMO Fisheries and Seafood Scheme, namely rolling out 50 line recycling bins around the English coastline. This funding will hopefully be the first such opportunity delivered following the recognition of RSA as a key stakeholder in the Fisheries Act 2020. It is hoped the group will provide the opportunity to bring RSAs together and to maximise opportunities to obtain funding over the coming years to support sea angling generally. View in browser | Latest news for clubs from the Angling Trust & Fish Legal Clubs Newsletter JANUARY 2022 Welcome to your Clubs Newsletter Welcome to the latest issue of our Angling Trust Clubs Newsletter. The first section of the newsletter includes information for your club committee on ways we can help and support you. As we have both freshwater and sea angling clubs, some of the items may not been relevant to you, but we hope you will still find them interesting. The second part contains information we would like you to share with your members. If you send out a club newsletter, have a facebook page or would be willing to put some of this information on your website, we would be very grateful. Tight lines! John Cheyne, Marketing, Communications & Membership Manager Otter fences: watch the video and register for our forum Otter fences are one of the most costly projects a club could undertake, making it vital they function as intended. Even with regular maintenance, damage and weak points can often be overlooked, resulting in the potential for otters to enter a fenced fishery and threaten valuable stock. Next Wednesday, 26th January, we'll be running an online forum when Richard Bamforth, Angling Trust Fisheries Management Advisor, will highlight some of the key ways in which otters can enter a fenced fishery, and offer advice on how to prevent this in future. The forum is recommended for anyone who operates a fenced fishery, or is considering taking on such a project in future. It is free to attend and open to all. In this video, Richard explains how the Angling Trust can help clubs and fisheries with predation issues and features the project undertaken by Leeds & District Amalgamated Society of Anglers at its Kippax Park Fishery. Click here to register for the online forum HERE TO HELP: Building Bridges Project team The Building Bridges Project has been running for 10 years and has made huge progress towards the successful integration of migrant angling communities in England – providing positive education and advice to help anglers understand our angling laws and customs. At ‘grass roots’ level, the Building Bridges team assist and support angling clubs and fisheries by translating their rules into different languages and offering free multi-lingual signage and leaflets. The team also work with clubs and fisheries to host angling events that bring together anglers from different countries and cultures, in addition to organising school visits and coaching days – giving many youngsters from diverse backgrounds an introduction to fishing in the UK. FIND OUT MORE Angling Trust Sea Angling Regional Voluntary Group (RVG) On Thursday 16th December the first meeting was held of the RVG. This group brings together recreational sea anglers from every coastal area of England and the Midlands with a view of ensuring that local issues are identified and actioned. It will link to the strategic Marine Advisory Group effectively acting as its ‘eyes and ears on the ground’ and will incorporate the current Marine Regions of Wessex/Isle of Wight, Wyvern and Sussex whilst ensuring other areas of the coastline and the Midlands are represented. The group will look at building participation and competitions, supporting environmental opportunities and identifying local issues impacting upon sea angling, particularly where these could reflect on wider national implications. It is also hoped to build good links with the Marine Management Organisation and local Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authorities to encourage the inclusion of local recreational sea angling views within in decision-making. Lastly, the group hopes to identify funding opportunities following the implementation of the Fisheries Act 2020. For the first time, recreational sea anglers nationally will have a mechanism for their local concerns and ambitions to be identified and actioned, reinforcing the commitment of Angling Trust CEO Jamie Cook for sea angling to develop positively in the years to come. The campaign to date has supported thousands of anglers across the country to reduce litter. READ MORE Angling Trust challenges Natural England's views on bait gathering In June, concerns were raised with the Angling Trust that recreational sea anglers (RSA) on the Isle of Sheppey were being banned from bait digging on a SSSI following a reassessment by Natural England. This led to warning signs being erected and police warning anglers they could be prosecuted if the digging continued. Challenges were made to Natural England and following legal advice in early autumn they stated: ‘While we aim to regulate commercial bait digging through the SSSI consenting process, we are now clear that an individual collecting for personal use would not require consent because they are not a notified SSSI owner or occupier themselves, and as they have a public right to fish, they do not require the SSSI landowner permission’. This was great news, and it was obvious to us that their concerns centred on illegal commercial activity. We have had similar concerns raised that could impact on RSA elsewhere, such as on the River Adur in Sussex. We have now agreed regular meetings with Natural England to identify issues early and to work to minimise these, particularly where they could impact on RSA locally and nationally and we hope this process will impact positively over the coming years.
