View in browser | Latest news from the Angling Trust & Fish Legal FEBRUARY 2021 Join our online forums in 2021 We are embracing online opportunities to run a series of forums this year with a themed event starting on Thursday 18th February with a presentation on ‘The Return of the Blue Shark’ by Dr Simon Thomas, Honorary Biologist for the Shark Angling Club of Great Britain. This will kick off the series, with more forums to follow on shark angling and a number of other topical sea angling issues. The following week and throughout the rest of 2021 we will be holding online forums with the Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authorities where you can put your questions to them and hear about the work they have been doing which benefits angling. The first of these forums is with Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. 25/02/2021 Cornwall and the Isle of Scilly 25/03/2021 Devon & Severn IFCA 22/04/2021 Southern IFCA 20/05/2021 Sussex IFCA 17/06/2021 Kent & Essex IFCA 22/07/2021 Eastern IFCA 23/09/2021 North Eastern IFCA 21/10/2021 Northumberland IFCA 18/11/2021 North Western IFCA If you would like to know more about any of these events and if there are topics you would like to see us cover, please contact our Marine Regions Coordinator, Nevin Hunter at marinecoordinator@anglingtrust.net WATCH: Looking back at our work in 2020 We’ve produced a series of three videos reviewing the Angling Trust’s sea angling campaigning highlights from 2020. Head of Sea Angling David Mitchell and Marine Regions Coordinator Nevin Hunter talk to Angling Trust Director Tim Macpherson about the new UK Fisheries Act, bluefin tuna, Highly Protected Marine Areas and our work supporting clubs and our regions over the course of 2020. Watch below: Specimen Award Scheme and Species Hunt suspended during lockdown As a result of the current national lockdown the Angling Trust has taken the decision to suspend the Sea Specimen Award Scheme and Specimen Hunt until further notice. Due to the competitive nature of both schemes, the Angling Trust wishes to remove any incentive for any entrant to travel to fish as part of either of these competitions and break the rules requiring them to fish locally. We will inform clubs and members when both schemes are up and running again. Keep an eye out for the results of 2020 which will be published on the Angling Trust website soon. Anglers Against Pollution All rivers lead to the sea and it’s no secret that our marine and coastal environments are suffocating in pollution. From pesky plastics to raw sewage, pollution is having detrimental impacts on our fish, environment and health. You can take action today by signing our petition and sharing your photos of marine pollution online by using the hashtag #anglersagainstpollution and tagging us on social media. You can even go one step further and show your support by wearing an Anglers Against Pollution t-shirt with profits going to support the campaign. Anglers Against Pollution: find out more Fish of the month: Dab Midwinter fishing sessions can often be saved by the humble yet delicious dab. A member of the flatfish family dabs are one of the smallest species with an average weight of well under a pound. They are most often caught very close to the shore on clean, sandy, ground. Lugworm is the best bait to attract these tasty flatties and the scent of old, sticky, lugworm often produces the best results. Dab flesh is sweeter than that of plaice or flounder. Try frying or roasting whole fish in butter for the best results. Stay Safe - and please fish local While fishing is permitted during this current national lockdown in England under the exercise provisions, it must take place locally, in a socially distanced manner and only once a day. Please follow the rules ... we all have a duty to abide by the strict and limited conditions to save lives and protect the NHS. Since the UK-EU Trade Agreement came into force on January 1st, the export of baits derived from animal produce, such as boilies, requires a European Health Certificate (EHC) to be completed which involves exhaustive and expensive testing, and certification from a vet. The Angling Trust believes bait needs to sit under a simpler EHC classification.
