Hiya Lofty. Just going out to get some mackerel then see if any Gurnard are around. If you go to the training bank Saturday try keeping to the shell bay/Studland side of the rocks and use some surface poppers.Cast towards the rocks at high tide. You can also fish next to the main shipping channel for plaice. But I personally wouldnt do that on a weekend this time of year nor on such a big tide. If its a multiplier reel you have it strips down easily.I clean the bearings in Lighter fuel.Just put some lighter fuel in an egg cup and drop your bearings in.The rest of the reel I wash in soapy water then lightly oil the spindel. But keep the oil away from the drag/Break plates. Then oil/grease the cogs. There are some sites on the internet that show you what to do.If your still unsure I will show you what to do then you could keep them maintained yourself. But if its a fixed spool reel you have they dont last long being used in a kayak Dont use WD40 it causes more harm than good.It strips away all the oil and grease.

I would stay clear of the harbor on a big Tide, unless you fish the upper reaches at Holton Heath. But that doesnt come to life until October.Plus Low tide is at around 7 - 8am so there wont be much water in the harbor. A few of us are planning to launch at the end of the Prom(Southbourne) at around 6.30am Sunday and fish round the Double Dyke outlet Pipe.Feel free to come along if you want.

Thanks for the replies Guys Dave...I had the other hand wrapped up in a cloth trying to stop the bleeding .I dont know if it was the smooth hound or the hook that cut my hand.Or maybe even the line when I was holding on to the leader. All the blood in my footwells was from my hand and not the fish ...Just glad I had some super glue with me .Though it was only a scratch but they always seem to bleed more when mixed with salt water.

I decided to have a go for Smooth hounds a few days back so PM'd and texted a few people to see if they were free Tuesday night,a few had to work or had other commitments. Milo (Mike) and Coombseye1 (Mark) had said they could make it. Mark hadn't been out since last year because of work commitments and he has never caught a smooth hound so was looking forward to maybe catching one All day yesterday the wind was getting stronger and I was in two minds weather to go or not.But it was off shore and as long as it stayed that way we would be ok. Mark came round to my house at about 7pm and we had arranged to meet Mike at the waters edge which was about a 45 minute drive. Got to Tanners at around 8pm,the wind had dropped right off and the tide was just starting to flood. We quickly set up and paddled out to the first set of Buoys the wind was strong as we lost the shelter of the mainland and was wind against tide,so it wasn't very comfortable fishing. Down went my bait and within 5 minutes I had my first fish and also my personal best common Smooth hound of 14lb 6oz ;D It was 3' 11" long A few minutes later Mike was playing a nice fish in which turned out to be a bass of about 3.5lb. Mark had a few runs from Smutts but they kept dropping the bait. Finally he did connect with one and is shown in the video at the bottom of this report. We managed about an hour fishing then the weed got bad so we moved closer inshore but had no more bites. It looks like the best time is in daylight and also dusk.Once darkness had fallen it went quiet. I did manage a nice Bass just as it got dark though ;D We will give it another go next week on neap tides and a hight at around 8pm. Some video caption of the evening.Click on blue box to view.

Paul. Are you going on JV tomorrow? I need to know as I am wondering weather to take my Kayak off the car roof tonight and store it. If You are going I will have a go for Plaice in the harbor Mark
-
Hiya Adam. I was waiting on a reply from yourself as to what we were doing,if you were going out or not. I have all my tackle ready incase I was going out with you. I think Paul (Sprinter) wanted to go out with Paul(Sinbad) and crew for him???? I will give it a while to hear back from you.If I dont go tomorrow I will probably end up going out on my Kayak. Regards. Mark

Sorry Adam. I read the title wrong If you have already arranged to take people out its ok with me,my mistake for not reading the title and just reading the post itself. I normally use 15lb line,1/0 hooks and 3oz weights for smooth hounds
-
Hiya Adam. I am not back at work untill Thursday and would love to come along with you.But not sure what sort of tackle you use out there I have a boat rod with a 12lb,20lb and 30lb tip.A multiplier with 18lb line and one set up for tope with about 30 -40lb line. But havent a clue what sort of rigs or lures you use out there. I will be happy to chip in with fuel and bait. I have never caught a cod off the boat had some small ones off the beach and one of about 3lb from the kayak.

Ooooops Sorry Richard.I just copied Martin Thanks for pointing it out Dave
