Craig, I also suggest you invest in a "coathanger" or equivalent to keep your buoy away from the bow. I went for the full Anka Yanka setup with a "Stainless Steve coathanger". Everything well constructed and buoy to Anka Yanka very securely Rope Spliced. I can just clip the system to my anchor warp after I 've set the anchor and put the coathanger on the unloaded warp between the cleat and anchor rope basket and then untie and let out as much as required before tying off again. Having a clipable unit allows me to store everything remotely when not in use. Expensive but should last a long while. There are cheaper alternatives e.g using "plastic containers " instead of the Buoy You Pays your money you takes your choice. Pete

Charlie, There are so many places to choose from all around the island just be careful that the large rise and fall doesn't cut you off from shore. The tides there have a nasty habit of creeping up behind you very quickly. I was over there on Holiday with the missus about 3 years ago but didnt take any tackle with me. I opted for a boat charter for a day and I had a good day out with this guy http://www.fishingjersey.co.uk/Boat.html Just in case you feel the need Peteg

Many years ago I had access to a few fishing trips aboard a friends converted ships lifeboat. It was manufactured from aluminium plate around 30 odd foot long and designed to take around 60 people. So with just 3 of us aboard and mininal ballast it was an unbelievable Roller. I can remember us adding ballast to it every weekend to try and improve the ride and I think we got 3 tonnes into her over time but with no real improvement. Thinking back it would seem that 3 tonnes should have been the starting point- 60X60KGS (PER PERSON) =3600TONNES We could never get her to sit low enough in the water and with a top speed from her little diesel engine of 4 knots getting through the 7knot harbour entrance current was always an experience. Ah the good old days........NOT

Bob see http://www.ul.com/, Its the Underwriters Laboratory who lay down conformance standards and tests for any equipment that is to be sold to the USA and Canada. You'll find CSA is also generally associated with it. Peteg

Anyone see the recent repeat of the Top Gear episode where they went racing a bmw 3 litre diesel with their own biodiesel. It certainly ate through a host of gaskets and plastic parts Requiring a major rebuild of the engine during the race weekend. There was fuel leaking everywhere! Be very wary Its one thing re-building an engine in a workshop with all the skills, tools and money to throw at it and another with a broken down engine xmiles out to sea with an engine bay full of fuel and no means of even attempting a repair. Guys, I also have joined the Old Gits club and I get really angry when reading and reviewing the governments position on matters "Fishing" See their replys to the recent petititions Unfortunately I also get angry about their decision making ability (or lack of it) on matters other than Fishing, like the economy and their mismanagement of pension scheme controls and and and and....Why did you start me off on this thread Still we wont have anything to worry about in around 10 years time cos there won't be any decent sized fish to catch inshore and we won't be buying rod licenses because it won't be worth it and we dont want to fund a further policing force do we? Fallen Off Soapbox now (I was sooooo angry!!!) It must be an age thing or perhaps frustration at not being able to get out on the water and catch some pesky fisheees Peteg

Paul, Looks Like you may have a cut and paste error as under the 2008 competitions the first line refers to 2007 Peteg

I reckon I'll give Sunday a go and try for a few more whiting over the spoils. I'm running a bit low on my magic groundbait but will bring ingredients along in the hope of making up a bit more. I am looking to spend Saturday on the boat doing a bit of well needed spring cleaning and and reorganising including changing over anchors etc. Mike would you and George be up for a day out ? If so send me a PM. Peteg

Coddy, I spent some time investigating the Rocna range and they have a hole drilled at the rear of the fluke for tripping. The Manson uses the slot in the shank for rock anchoring which provides an auto trip as the shackle slides to the back -.....Theoretically For sand anchoring there is a single slotted hole at the front of the shank and no hole at the rear of the fluke so I may have to drill one. I have heard that Rocna will be producing a slotted shank version soon. I get the impression that there is a degree of bad feeling between Rocna and Manson . My reason for choosing Manson over Rocna is price and hopefully the slotted shank will work. Peteg

Guys, Thanks for all the advice- Anchoring and anchor types is one of those subjects that can go on and on and on without a definite single solution. My own little folding grapnel does have 7 metres of 8mm chain on it and 100m rode and sometimes sets so hard I have trouble dislodging it with the Anka Yanka system so have set the tie wrap trip pretty light at 1 heavy duty one so I can guarantee a trip. I am always careful to lock the folding blades before laying it and I must admit I havent really had a problem with it. However My second anchor is a pile of pooh and is a strange form of Danforth/Brittany clone it has much lighter and shorter chain and rode and I was hoping to use it in the Harbour shallows. As Charlie says manhandling an anchor and chain all day is tiring to say the least so I thought this one would be great for quick position changes. How wrong could I be it doesn't seem to have enough weight to set or the blades arent sharp enough to dig in. Anyway I have decided to change the Danforth style to my grapnel as a backup anchor and go for a 7kg Manson Supreme to replace the grapnel. My Only Concern is that I wont be able to trip it easily .Its got a slotted shank which may or may not work as intended. Mike , I'll take you up on your kind offer of a Sea Safety Check one of these days. My Problem is committing to a date .It is definately on my list of things to do but I need to organise a few things first like spare time Watch Peteg

Charlie, Hope you don't mind me enquiring about your anchor capabilities. I'm looking to get a replacement for my trusty 4kg folding grapnel and have almost decided on the manufacturer and type, having scoured the internet for tests and prices. What type of anchor are you using? It wouldn't happen to be a Bruce(Claw type) or CQR Plough would it.? and what is chain length and dims- how much rode factor were you anchored on. Do you have a chain and windlass setup or do you have to manually drop and recover? Would you consider changing anchor type after this recent experience? My Chosen design will not only have to be lightweight(manual handling-around 4kg boat is 6m & 1tonne empty) quick setting (within 1 metre) and no dragging under general fishing conditions and tides but also be easy to lift if stuck. It should also be a reasonable price!! Some prices and shipping costs are astronomical!! On the Internet there are some very anti opinions relating to some of the current designs in particular the Bruce style and even the CQR . The anchor tests are biased towards quick setting and zero dragging on sand and mud bottoms and are generally for the slightly larger boats and yachts whilst mooring overnight whereby the last thing you need is a dragging anchor. Anchoring for fishing purposes can be slightly more tolerant but not much.(Assuming you don't knod off on an allnighter!!!) Opinions are Generally that the Bruce type is difficult to set and once set doesn't have much holding power. The CQR is generally better but is still no match for the modern anchor designs and also it can give you a nasty bite with its swivelling stock. I'm thinking of changing to a Manson Supreme Plough style with Roll Bar which seems to be a poor copy of a Rockna but still gives about 80% Rockna performance . It has a UK distributor in Hampshire so I could collect ! Peteg

Jack, I always found the adage true when fishing the Bristol Channel in my youth. In fact there was a likelyhood of zero bites let alone fish on the day. On the occassions when I have tried fishing easterlies from Poole over the last couple of years I have had similar experiences and I 'm sure its not all due to my rusty angling skills. I would have to be persuaded to go out in an easterly nowadays.. Mind you it could all change if sufficient members posted decent catch reports in easterlies Perhaps wind direction should be included as a matter of course in the catch reports and we could analyse the results at the end of the year. sTTu. Same EBAY Shop but I recommend the anchorplait rather than braid. I bought 100metres 2 years ago and it is super to handle and still going strong. I've also spliced it to anchor chain which is pretty easy and gives you a very strong joint. For the type and quality of rope the price is excellent see details below- http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...52BSI%26otn%3D4 Peteg

You've got to Hand it to the Welsh Farming Fraternity. Committment to the task in hand and stamina because I think I know this particular Welsh Farmer and was pretty sure he was carrying out the same service to his flock of sheep when I drove passed earlier. Peteg
