I booked a fishing trip for my son and I over to Ireland a good few years back, and went over on the ferry specifically to do the days fishing. Anyway the wind blew up on the way over there and when we got to Ireland it was blowing a gale. We caught a bus (with all our fishing gear) from Rosslaire to Wexford to get on our fishing boat and were suprised to see that the water at Wexford was nice and calm with only little crests on the waves. The skipper suggested that we should not go out today as its too rough ..... to which I laughed and told him it looks fine, and I have just sat on a ferry all night to make this trip. The remaining fishermen (all local to Wexford) laughed but agreed that if I was willing then they would make the trip too, so the skipper insisted we wore life jackets and off we went What I didnt realise was that Wexford harbour is a bit like Poole harbour, nicely sheltered!!!!! As we were getting nearer and nearer to the harbour enterance I could see the waves were MASSIVE!!! We exited the harbour into waves that were breaking over the cabin of the boat, I have never been so scared. He kept us out there for about an hour or so, smiling every time he looked at me being sick over the side of the boat before taking pity on me and taking us back. Once we were back alongside he offered me my money back, which of course i declined but he also made me promise that I will never question the skippers judgement again. Lesson learned

exactly Zippy. As is mentioned, they are not a salvage firm. If the fishermen decided to put their lives at risk to save the cost of professional salvage, that was their decision. The fact the RNLI showed up to be there "just in case" was IMHO commendable.

I tried my car sat nav (on GPS mode) and had checked on Google maps beforehand. I could not get my car sat nav to coincide with what I was looking for. I went out yesterday and bought myself a nice shiny new Garmin Chartplotter that I was intending on christening on Saturday but its looking like the weather has other ideas!

Thanks Alan. For now I have decided to stick with her. I often see sportier boats rocking like a bronco while we are sat quite comfortably on mine fishing happily, but i also quite often see those same boats arrive at the slipway as I am already setting off and they fly past me before I even get to the harbour entrance. To be honest at this moment in time I am fortunate that the cost of trips is of less concern than the comfort so I suppose for now comfort has to take precedence.

Derek & Charlie, what you both say makes perfect sense. The weather is rarely good enough to do the Island anyway so I suppose a trip on a charter on the odd occasion makes much more sense than losing a small fortune on my boat just to get something else that might not tick all the boxes either. I think i will stick with my lovely little boat for now and be grateful for what I have. Many thanks for the replies.

I will be gutted if she has to go, but thanks for the replies chaps. Tell me, What is the benefit of a displacement hull then? Are they more stable? Coz I do suffer quite a bit from sea sickness and anything less stable would possibly not get used as much due to the lack of comfort.

Hi, I have a lovely stable little Plymouth Pilot 18. It has a brand new 17hp inboard diesel engine which sips fuel and gives a maximum speed of 7 knots..... but my need for speed is getting the better of me!! I am told the maximum speed of an 18ft displacement hull will be no more than 7 or 8 knots and if this is the case i might have to consider a different boat. An increase to about 10 to 12 knots would be acceptable to me for now Is there any way i can increase the transome strength (even build an external transome) to take an outboard for those days i want to travel to far off places?? Even St Albans Head or the Needles is an all day trip for me at the moment. Help me please, I would love to keep my "little Sal" but she needs to be able to get me places quicker or she might have to go.

The new project of the European Commission... European Commission has just announced an agreement whereby English will be the official language of the European Union rather than German, which was the other possibility. As part of the negotiations, the British Government conceded that English spelling had some room for improvement and has accepted a 5- year phase-in plan that would become known as 'Euro-English'. In the first year, 's' will replace the soft 'c'. Sertainly, this will make the sivil servants jump with joy. The hard 'c' will be dropped in favour of 'k'. This should klear up konfusion, and keyboards kan have one less letter. There will be growing publik enthusiasm in the sekond year when the troublesome 'ph' will be replaced with 'f'. This will make words like fotograf 20% shorter. In the 3rd year, publik akseptanse of the new spelling kan be expekted to reach the stage where! more komplikated changes are possible. Governments will enkourage the removal of double letters which have always ben a deterent to akurate speling. Agreed. Almost certainly your aerial will receive reasonably well with a foot missing from it, but the reflected power during transmit could cause damage to the output of your transmitter. Best get it checked or replace i'm afraid.

fantastic pictures Adam. So good in fact, that they inspired me to take a day diving course over at Swanage as a taster. Absolutely amazing and i am booking the PADI open water course in a few weeks. I am totally hooked!! Thanks.

What an obvious suggestion Freddie! Why didnt i think of that? My trailer is braked so wouldnt pull off the slipway and i would possibly not look like a wally every time there is a side wind or bit of swell. A tip worth the price of membership on its own i think.

I had a mooring inside holes bay, (best part of 1100 per year). Had to row out there with kit, then check to see what had been nicked or damaged before finally motoring to pick up the rest of the crew. My heart was always fluttering on the return trip in the hope that the dinghy was still where we had left it (it always was) but to be honest, the above along with the time it all added to the day made the whole experience less than fun. I now launch and retrieve my Plymouth Pilot at Baiter but know that because of the draft, i am limited by the height of the tide. The only time we struggle is when there is a bit of a swell (and the boau tides over the trailer) or when there is a strong side wind (which seems to be about every weekend at the moment). We are getting better, but i would prefer no one videos us and sends it to the TV just yet!

As long as the "system" requires skippers to dump huge amounts of dead fish back into the sea, it seems likely that some will be tempted to break the rules and land their catches illegally Surely the above should be taken into consideration tho??

I use a Honda 5HP 4 stroke on my 18ft Plymouth Pilot. Works absolutely fine on the very rare occasion its needed.

Fished the flood tide on Sunday 11th May just inside the harbour and had a couple, one 5 1/2 lb (which i kept and ate) and one at 9lb which i put back alive.

I will definitely join soon, I just keep running out of time!!

Although not actually in the competition, I fished just off Swanage bay alongside about 16 other boats, I only managed one bream just over 1 1/2lb but fished an hour or so inside poole harbour while waiting for enough water to get back on the trailor and caught 2 bass, one 5 1/2lb (which is on my plate tonight) and one at 9lb (which went back)

I was just at the end of the training bank last Sunday (19th) and got a couple of similar sized bass too.
