  1. The competition sec has decided that the comp will be held on the 14th so the 14th it is Not all members have access to the website so by giving us a chance to tell others at the monthly meeting it give other members a chance to fish the comp if they like Martin
  2. Poole Sea Angling Centre definately have some Martin
  3. Gordon Not bi annually but annually, we are not river fishermen so a season to me is 1 complete year. The only reason to reverse the braid would be to rule out the chance of premature failure of the braid. Sun degrades all lines and as a large proportion of braid never sees the light of day reverse it and extend the life. Martin
  4. Dan Castaways does do squid but I wouldnt know if they have any in, best to give them a call. Numbers in the telephone book Martin
  5. Hi Zed Good advice from both Paul and Mike above. The sliding clicky thing on the reel is best left off as most anglers find the noise very annoying. The only time we use it on our boat is if the rod is put in a holder and left to fish itself. The idea is that you get you tackle on the bottom fishing set the ratchet and either put the reel out of gear or if resistance isn't quite enough leave in gear and back off the clutch until the reel stays put without letting off line in the tide. When a decent fish comes along it will pull line from the reel with the ratchet giving an audible alarm of some activity. If /when this happens pick up the rod, turn the ratchet off, either turn the handle to engage the gears or tighten the clutch up to a pre-determined point (not locked up) and play your fish. I would strongly recommend the use of braid especially if you intend to go offshore any distance however as braid has no stretch you will need to set your clutch slightly lighter. The reason for this is that mono with its stretch (typically 30%ish) gives you a kind of added buffer that you do not get with braid. Either a slower action rod or less clutch/drag is needed to compensate for this. Do use backing line of about 20-25lb and nearly fill the reel, leave about 8/10mm of room on the spool to take your braid. The 6500 is a lightish reel so I would suggest you load it with about 200meteres of 20-25lb braid. After a seasons use you can reverse the braid to get another year out of it. Ordinary knots are not that good in braid and as Mike posted try the albright or get a member to show you their preferred knots. Martin

  13. Dean and I decided to get up early (for us) at 6am. Headed down to the boat at Rockley and found the thick fog as Duncan describes. This carried on right until we got to the fuel barge where it cleared. How disorienting fog is, I was sure I had travelled further Any how the rest of the day was fine weather wise with just a residual swell with a slight chop over later. We went to the 50/50 banks first to feather up some mackerel. They were there but not in abundance. After an hour of feathering we had enough for Duncan and ourselves who by then had joined us. At this point we decided not to go with our original plan of go west but try a mark we had acquired but had not tried yet. We had been told it was a Bass mark but with the small tides only pushing us over at about 1.3 knots we gave up after a couple of drifts and anchored it instead. I dropped my mackerel strip down and within a minute or two had a fish on. It was obviously a large ray and in even the small tide took what seemed like an age to get to the surface. It turned out to be a Blonde Ray of 20lb 8oz. The fishing was steady after this with some quality specimens thrown in. Best fish of the day for us where: Dean 9lb 9oz (so we no the mark holds Bass) Me with a 20lb 8oz blonde, 15lb 1oz blonde and two cracking Bullhuss one of 12lb 8oz and one of 12lb 10oz Deans Bass Don't you dare bite me 12lb 10oz Bullhuss All in all (Bream fishing aside) one of the best days we have had this year. We will definitely be going back Martin
  14. Also out of date, that report was dated 2003 and the fish was caught by a commercial fisherman although he was angling Martin
