  1. Is it worth Charlie? You have only been out a couple of times on your boat, getting as bad a Jim! Dave
  2. Interesting thread Tom, when I first got into boat fishing/owning I found it very difficult to get decent/helpful information which is why I started my own website, www.fishing-boats.info (thats got my plug over) I admit I have neglected the site a bit but it still gets regular hits from new visitors. I am sure if Dave or anyone wishes to use some of the information I have no objections, equally it would be good to get the site more up todate. The biggest problem I found was to get owners to put their thoughts down in words, I did not mind how it was sent to me as I could edit and make constructive alterations for a better layout for web page use. Anyway I wish you luck and if I can be of help in any way give me a call. Dave
  3. As point of interest, if you managed to catch a mullet or any other fish for that matter, from your mooring would it count in club comps? I know it doesn't if you are on a pontoon or fixed structure for the boat species comp but what about other club comps? Dave

Hi Shane Welcome to the best club & site on the South coast. I use to live in Bedfordshire 6+yrs ago so I know how far it is from the sea!! There is always plenty of help and advice offered to those who ask (and sometimes those who don't ask!) Safety is paramount in the club and there are many people who will help you when ever you need it. Enjoy your stay & the more you contribute the more you will get out of the club. Oh, you will also need a good sence of humour as well Dave
  5. A thread could be started with the link included under the safety section and pinned Martin Martin I realised I started the Anchor thread in the wrong section, could you please move it to the Safety section. Thanks Dave
  6. HAPPY BIRTHDAY TREVOR Hope you have a great day Dave

The policing is simple if bag limits are introduced. If every recreational angler has a bag limit of "x" number of fish to take home and then if a bylaw is passed, a Fisheries Officer could then stop and search any boat for a fish count. The problem is agreeing how many fish is anyone person allowed to take home in a day? What if you were out on a multi-day trip, do you stop when you catch your quota? If a fish is brought up from the depths and its swim bladder is blown, will it survive when you have to put it back? I am sure there are many other problems to resolve but as has been stated before other countries have bag limits and even seasons so it is not insurmountable if there is enough willingness for it to succeed. For those interested there has been talk about bag limits for recreational anglers at the Poole & District Sea Anglers Association for some time. I do know that the Southern Sea Fisheries Officers, now called IFCA, would welcome a voluntary limit so they could set a bylaw and catch those unscrupulous anglers who are unlicensed to sell fish. This is quite a contentious issue with some, as they feel they should be able to take whatever they wish whenever they like. The other thing to remember is that the charter boat skippers would have to sign up to this as well. Many of their customers can live many miles away from the coast and when paying around

  10. Hi Graham If you ever want a practice with someone onboard, but standing by just in case, I am happy to assist and give any advice at the time. Just give me a call or PM Dave
  11. Hi Rich Looks a good one but would suggest you check it is at least a 100n buoyance I can see the problem, the kids grow so quickly they would soon out grow other styles. I would also suggest getting a safety line that clips to the jacket and boat, just in case! Dave
  12. If anyone has one of the above engines in 2hp or 2.5hp two-stroke there is a simple way of making it faster/more powerful. It appears that these engines share all the same components as the 3.3hp model, engine wise. Same block, carb, needle & jet however they way they controlled the power is to reduce the throttle opening. You just need to remove approx 10mm from the top of the throttle slide so that it opens fully. The 3.3hp model does have a differant gear ratio and gearlever where as the lower hp models are direct drive. Thought it might help others that may feel they need a little more power. Other engines may have the same restrictions so worth a look next time you service the engine. Dave

  15. Both John and I were Alderney virgins, so we were both interested in how, why and what went & goes on during a trip across. We were all packed and loaded and set off from Cobbs at approx 7.30am on Thursday full of anticipation. Unfortunately John had done something to his back and unknown to me was suffering before we set off. We were due to meet Serenity and Awol around the harbour entrance or swash area. As been said on other reports the sea state was a bit rougher than expected and in fact we did not meet up with anyone but did make contact via radio. John had made a route on the plotter to Alderney so it was just a matter of trying to follow it! After arriving in Braye, we tied up to a mooring and sat and had a coffee, we did try having a coffee on route but most went over the floor! Later we had a fish around the harbour entrance and John managed small pollack & mackerel and I pulled in a beautiful male cuckoo wrasse. It must have been a good 2lb+ but I did not weigh it, only to be told later that it would have broken the club record! Weigh every fish from now on David! Back to the mooring and get ready for the evenings meal. Friday We followed Awol, Three Boys & Serenity out to the Schole bank, we watched in interest as Awol and then Three Boys hit the Swinge! It was our turn and I have seen some standing waves but this was something else We had a wall of water straight over the front of the boat and up and over the canvas roof and cascade down onto the deck which was soon awash. Fortunately John's boat has scuppers so it quickly drained out but very interesting at 5-8kts! Down on the bank we soon managed to catch some launce but found it frustrating not getting any bites. Charlie suggested letting more line out and blow me on the next drift at almost the same time both John & I caught our first Turbots. Tried more drifts, John by now getting an expert to drift in the same or similar direction, but nothing. Did manage a Red Gurnard and a Lesser Weaver however. Back on the mooring to get ready for the meal at the Moorings Saturday John was not good by now and in fact his back locked out when trying to put his socks on. We said to the others that we might come around the back of the Island later depending how John felt. We had a coffee or two and John managed to get out on deck and I wanted to rest his back but he insisted we go fishing so we headed out Eastwards, fortunately it was almost slack water so it was relatively calm and we dropped anchor in a calm little bay but did not catch anything so after a while we upped anchor and drifted whilst having lunch sitting in the sun with a line out. We decided to head back to the harbour early and saw Joint Venture drifting so we had a go but again did not manage to hook up to anything, so headed back to the harbour. We got ready for the big meal of the week-end and had drinks on the terrace Sunday We were part of the second wave of boats heading home but due to the sea conditions and johns back we did not go as fast as the others so it was a slow run home. We left Braye at 09.30 and walked off Cobbs pontoon at 5.00pm A great time was had and it was a shame John's back did not allow him to enjoy the trip to the full but we both felt it was worthwhile and vowed to return sometime. Thanks again to John for a great trip and what a superb craft Rosie One is for such a trip, not once did I feel concerned. Dave

Hi Martin Welcome to the best fishing club in the South. Ask away any questions good or silly, we all have to start somewhere, and I am sure you will get a good response. We all use Ch 6 on the VHF when out and about so listen in and chat away. If you need any courses, just ask me as I can normally arrange them with discounts. Stay safe Dave
  17. I would like to thank everyone on the Alderney trip as this was my first time there. As usual everyone was helpful with tips and suggestions which did make life easier. The return jouney made us feel more comfortable as a group slowing plodding our way accross the channel and keeping in contact. Also thanks for Tony for our medical advice on how to reduce the pain level for my skipper. A BIG thanks to John for inviting me along and sharing the excitement and enjoyment of the trip. Dave
  18. John I would have a word with The Service Centre at Wareham http://www.marineelectronicservice.com/ Found them very helpful and reasonable price. Dave
  19. On all the sites I have looked at seems like a F3 - F4 most of the days including Sunday. Seems a stronger wind to startwith near Poole but improving further away from mainland you go. Dave
  20. Hi Duncan It is proposed to introduce a ban on all trawling within (I think) 6 miles from the shore around Southern Sea Fisheries catchment area, however I may have got it wrong and it could have been 3 miles but will look it up if needed, but either way there will be a ban on ALL trawling which has got to be a good thing for all. This is proposed to be introduced in 2012/13 Dave
  21. I found this information about Fish conservation in Alderney here http://www.alderney.gov.gg/Sea-Fisheries-Green-Paper Interesting proposal of a bag limit per species per angler If they introduce the proposal might be interesting to see if it happens over here. Dave
  22. I believe there is a get together meet on Sunday 8th at 8pm at the Bakers Arms to finalise trip plans. If I have got it wrong can someone please advise Dave
  23. Thanks for the good wishes and Happy Birthday to Charlie too Managed to get out on the water albeit on the Quay/harbour boat trips as we went to Brownsea Island for the first time. Had a great walk around the island with a nice cream tea to finish. Dave
