Duncan very kindly offered Jimbo and Me a place on Phaeton, on Fri. it seemed a lull in the weather would be an ideal oppertunity to get out. After a slightly delayed start, we headed off in calm seas towards the West. Macky were sparce in Swanage Bay, dispersed by the storms. Pushing on round the Anvil, we decided to go to plan B, the residual swell not being too plesent. Over to Christchurch ledge. The bream also seemed to have been moved and only pout and doggies obliged. The only saving grace for me was an approx. 1.5lb Lobster!!!!! Taken on my bream gear, size 4 hook and 10lb trace! - Tasted heavenly! Jimbo lost a small eel, then the wind got up, the anchor was breifly stuck and gremilns in Phaetons electrical system pushed us back home. A very plesent day nonetheless! Cheers Duncan.

If he wants cheap (compared to Poole) Christchurch is a good bet, esp. further up the river, swinging moorings are cheap as chips. Dont know who to contact though, if someone can advise Ill email him.

Well thats 18 people confirmed - good turn out!! - Just hope the weather improves. See you all out their 2moro!

So why does the Sea Angler Orkney 520 get up to 24 knots and cruise at 17??? It only has a 30hp 4stk Mariner/..... Just playing devils advocate?????
-
Just to remind all club members - the 2nd PBSBAC club species hunt is on Sun. We need (I think?) at least 12 members to fish to make it elligible for the BFM Comp - where a Suzuki 70hp 4 stke and a Suzuki Grand Vitara are up for grabs! Whos fishing then?, The forcast is reasonable....2-4 SW all day!

Could this be the reason you go so slow??

I can take you at a squeeze, Bob F may need crew.... youll have to ring him though, he's been in France.

With various posts on this site and other forums recently, it would be interesting to see how many of the users are members or not. This is not designed to single anyone out, if you dont feel you want to answer then that is fine. Discusions can be entered into another thread. NB your vote is totally confidential and your id cannot be viewed by anyone so go on tick a box

Where's Loyal Royal???>....

Hmmm, makes very interesting reading. Some of the replies are massive and very in-depth. This is not the first time I have read this type of thread, and I now feel that the time and effort spent in typing replies to those who dont want to listen or have opposing feelings is a loosing battle. Many of the regular users to this forum know my feelings...you can moan all you like about fishing being a relaxing sport, free from polictics - I agree, but if we dont take action there will be not sport or fish to fish for. ANYTHING I can do to help our cause I will do,

Rich, Read the link in coddies post!..it explains it very well and in great detail. As james says, it is the prop grabbing air. Water has a certain resistance, and therfore the prop can 'grab' against it, when pockets of air, or small air bubbles build around the prop, the blades are effectivly spining in thin air READ THE LINK!!

Rich, it all depends on what type of finish you are looking for. If you want to relicate the orginal I'd suggest going to a tackle shop and having a specialist rod builder do it. The whipping is relativly easy provided you take your time - its the epoxy high build varnish that is tricky to achieve. Tackle shops do sell it in kits, about 12 quid I think, but its a lot of hastle for 1 ring, better to leave it to the pros. However if you arent to fussed, here's how to do it: 1.) Tape the ring into position using a little masking tape 2.) Buy a PROPER whipping thread for sea rods, dont use cotton! 3.) Tie it off using a hitch at the leg of the ring 4.) Begin whipping by rotating the rod not the whiiping spool 5.) No need to double whip, it can make it messy as the thread often wont lay parralel 6.) Finish with a couple of half tucks 7.) Coat the whipping with Dope to secure it 8.) Apply 2/3 coats of varnish over the top. 2.3 thin coats are always better than 1 thick one!! Their is a 'proper' way to secure a whipiing, but its far to complicated to type here. Its one of those thinsg that once youve seen it, its easy - like splicing for example! If you need a hand, I will do it for you - just pop it over! Re. the dayglo bit - leave it as it is...you will ruin the look of the rod if you try to spray it, better to leave it faded, it looks like its been used then!

Why is it a maybe??......the match is on regardless as it is part of the BFM comp.

So why do they supply a snatch cable with the trailer - the perfect size, length and shape to slip over the tow bar? My snatch wouldnt fit through the hole on the anchor point. So do I need to attched a seperate cable / chain??
-
Newboy - we use flurocarbon as a leader/trace when fishing for shy or line sensitive fish, Bass, Mullet etc. Still braid as a mainline..... Rich - This is all I use for a leader when fly fishing, you simply cannot beat it!
-
Coddy, Yep, I understand what you mean...my trailer is the same. the 2nd keel roller acts to keep it all straight when recovering the boat. At present I have no gripes with my rubber rollers so will keep them. Also I though Id struggle without a keel band, but so far it has been OK, so if it aint broke, why fix it??? Coddy, If you want a tub, PM me your address and Ill post one to you. Cheers Adam

Just thought you may want to see what Southbourne looked like at 4.30pm today. Force 8 gales as predicted....why is it they always get it right when the weather IS going to be bad!! Will it die for the weekend?...probably not. I can see it getting very busy drifting the castle on Sun!!!!
-
Yes, but did you CATCH anything!??!!! ...dont tell me you didnt take a rod///
-
I can only get mine to about 34/5 PSI. So thats where they stay! When I 1st got the boat I was a little alarmed as they seemed to bugle a little when underway. However I think 35 is about right, and the 'give' in the tyres gives a nice soft ride.
-
I like the idea of nylon rollers, but am concerned about the lack of 'cushion' the boat will get from the harder nylon. I have heard of stress cracks appearing along the hull from trailering??>....
-
Good points Malc. I too have heard issues about the tyres on trailers, esp. Warrior/Indespension. I think I have 6ply on mine, 165 I think? Havent heard about changing the tyres every 4 years though...I will cetianly adopt that poilicy. What with flares and tyres going out of 'date' ...it gets pretty expensive!!

Nope it's just a boggo 4wd. But I think for what I need it for it will cope fine. I think you are right the 5dr is the better chioce. Not many around though, more 3drs - but hell, they are small inside. Although she has a KA at the moment, so she will be used to it!

Gorilla Tubs. - The big flexible yellow ones. I do have an anchor locker on BW, but when using the alderney ring, the warp and kit doesnt go back in while at sea, so I need to store mine. I have one of the big black bins with 2 rope handles, and one of the 'Faulks Gorila Tubs'. These are basically made for plastering etc. They are soft and flexible and never break. The first time I used the black bin as an anchor store the anchor split the sides as they are quite brittle. These gorilla tubs are the nuts. Mine is big enough to hold 300mtrs of rope, anchor and chain and my alderney ring and bouy - just. But I only have the medium one. Coddy - if you want one, give me your rough location and Ill tell you where our nearest branch is. - They only cost about

I think that Rach and I have settled on the Rav4. A few queries though you guys may be able to help with. Basically the car will be fine for what she wants it for, shopping, work, shopping, shopping...you get the picture. However I want to hitch 1300kgs of boat to it and drive it up bumpy, slippy ramps! Looking at the tecnical stats and using my basic engineering knowledge I surmise the following. Kerb Weight: 3 Door 1330kgs, 5 Door 1385kgs Max Tow Cap. (braked) 1500kg Torque: 141lbs / ft Is this all I need to know...is this ok for what I need it for? Final question....The Tow Cap. and the Torque are the same, but the kerb weights are slighly diff, by 50kgs. The 3 door suits our needs better, so will 50kgs make much differnece to its pulling capacity?
