Good luck Bob, I think there will be whiting and maybe codling. Have a good one. Regards, BB

Good idea Martin. He is only seven but it will please him that he is part of it all. Regards, BB

Charlie, Thanks for that mate, Are there any more comps this year that the juniors can fish? BB
-
There is a pretty good run of codling on Chesil if the tide is right lads. BB
-
What no fireworks Bob? You must have amassed major brownie points to get away with that. BB

PS Why dont you join the club Peter? I live in Weymouth and thoroughly enjoy fishing the comps. You couldn,t wish for a nicer bunch than these lads. The big thing is the sharing of info. A lot of fishermen feel as though some marks are their personal property. Join in mate, you wont regret it. BB

Peter, Do you know Chequers in Portland harbour or second entrance as it is sometimes called? If so get on the outside of the wall and go towards the Hood for about 100 mtrs. There is a concrete building on the wall. Go straight out for 150mtrs, drop your pick and haul them in. If you have a fishfinder just make sure you are on flat ground and you cannot go wrong. However you may find that squid works better than fish sometimes. BB

Sorry Gents but it only printed half of my post, B%$^%^%$$%^% PC. The other point I was going to raise was that I got Sam spinning a worm for a Pollack and he got Scad, Mackerel, Wrasse as well. However, once he had caught one of each I got him to fish for other species. My fault for not reading the sheet properly but he could have really pushed his points up if I had read it. BB

Charlie, Do I understand from your reply that there is a seperate trophy for Juniors? I was led to believe that there was no differential between Adults and Juniors in PBSBAC. BB

Newboy, It is rather similar to the rig used in Menorca by the locals for Mullet. They have a large float with lots of hooks hanging from it. They then squash lots of bread around the float and on the hooks. They do seem to foul hook a lot of them though but it is very effective. BB

Yes please Adam, Let me know the details and your address and I will post you the pennies mate

Thank you Charlie, I have let him know and he has started gloating already. I bet the whole school knows by lunchtime. BB

A thought suddenly hit me this evening while assisting/ fishing with my son in the junior league, regarding Adams comments on conger fishing yesterday. 150 lb traces for fishing. I realise that conger have tremendous biting power but even very light wire ( Comparitively speaking ) is impervious to all but the biggest eels. 30-50 should be able to subdue most eels. Some of you chaps are probably not old enough to remember a programme called OUT OF TOWN with Jack Hargreaves but I vividly remember a certain one regarding light tackle. Dont forget we are talking 35 years ago so envisage the tackle used. He rigged a 10lb class outfit together with a fixed spool reel and went to the local swimming baths. His aim was to show just how much pressure one could use to subdue the biggest fish on light tackle. He tied the 10lb line to the belt of a fully suited diver and challenged him to swim to the other end of a 50 mtr(yard) pool. Not a chance of the diver making it. I know that fish are more adapted to life in the water(Obviously) but it opened my eyes to the possibilities with balanced light line tackle. What I am getting at is that even with a rod bent double it is suprising how little strain you are putting on the outfit. If you think that braid manufacturers recommend 1/3 of the breaking strain as drag pressure yet you can still halt a big fish. With todays technology it wont be long before the perfect trace line/wire is on the market, wafer thin and super strong, presentation is foremost. Am I waffling on here? but it is a subject for conjecture. BB

Just one more thing, I got snapped by a very good fish. I believe it was either a trigger or a good wrasse. (That is the trouble using size 6 hooks) The club record wrasse could be teetering chaps if it was a cunner. Going back next week with velvets for a looksee. BB

Hi Charlie, I have double checked and he beat me mate. His score was: 4 dogs 8pts 1 huss 5pts 4 wrasse 8pts 1 pollack 5pts 1 pout 1pt 1 scad 3pts 1 mackerel 1pt Total....31pts + 50 species pts = 81 pts. My score was: 4 dogs 8pts 2 huss 10pts 4 wrasse 8pts 1 pollack 5pts 3 pout 3pts 3 mackerel 3pts Total....37pts + 40 species points = 77 pts I would like to say I let him win, but not the case.

Hi Adam, For conger fishing I use 5/0 or 6/0. You can,t fish cicles pennel rig as it blocks the action of the hook. Just lip hook a pout, mackerel flapper or tail end of squid and let the hook do the work. The only problem with them is that by their hooking system you need to let the fish run away. This turns the hook and lip hooks every time. Conger have a nasty habit of gently picking up your bait then reversing back into their hole. They can be impossible to move if this happens. Reef fish and rough ground fish are OK. I tie the hook to 50lb pike trace wire with a twist knot then cover the knot in shrink tube.Gives better presentation than thick mono mate. Got shown this at the YYS comp didn,t we Rich. Regards, BB PS I have just checked the scores using your sheet and it looks like my son gave me a duffing yesterday. Hope I am wrong or I will never live it down.

Adam, If you are getting decent runs and missing them, try circle hooks. I know that you use them for Bream but do you use them for bigger species. I find they are brilliant for the eels mate. BB

Didnt want to fish in tight mate but situation changed and don,t really like blasting out deep single handed with the nipper on board, you never know. There are still plenty of Bass about boys if there is any interest out there. BB

Got let down by my boat partner today as he got wasted on Stella last night, just my son Sam and I went out. Consequently we stayed inshore and fished for 4 hrs but still done OK. Fish as follows: Sam: 4 Dogfish, 1 Bullhuss, 4 Wrasse, 1 Pollack, 1 Pout, 1 Scad, 1 Mackerel, 4 Gobies ( Do they count?) Biggest wrasse went 3lbs. I had to help hold the rod for that one as it is quite shallow inside Chequers and they tend to get back in the rocks. I just supported the butt for him coz it would have pulled the rod in. BB: 4 Dogfish, 2 Bullhuss, 4 wrasse, 1 pollack, 3 pout, 3 Mackerel, 4 Gobies. Biggest wrasse, not as big as Sams. I have a picture of Sam with his wrasse so I will try and send it

Much obliged Duncan, Good luck tomorrow. BB

Hi gents, I have had a kind offer of a boat for tomorrow but I have already press-ganged my boat partner into fishing , along with my son. out of Weymouth. I believe the comp is 5 hrs from first drop and two hooks with a maximum of two rods. (Although with my son on board we can only fish one) Would someone please post a points sheet. Weather looks set so all systems go. Congrats again James so let us mere mortals have a chance tomorrow. Regards, BB
