Keep the names coming guys and I will start to look into the oportunities and costs are we thinking Portland marina, Weymouth marina or Weymouth Quay Charlie
-
I think that it should be rigged as Tom suggests no slack, using enough ties so that when it needs breaking out from a jam they break but most of the time they do not. Too many ties and you may not trip it, to few and it will trip every time the boat bounces on a wave. Rob if yours never breaks you ether fish clean ground or the tie is to big. Charlie

At this rate it will be in June on the starfish grounds Charlie

If its Portland accomadation for the trailers may be easy, although the launch fees are a bit steep. and all of the other Dean and Reddyhof marina's have good pubs close to hand, two of them are owned by the marina's, so I expect something will be available. If we decided to go there for the weekend I would be happy to see what I can do ref prices. You are right Paul, Wendy does not look on here But as Martin said Wendy, Lorraine and Veronica were up for coming for a social. I think once the comp dates are known, I would be happy to try and set this up to avoid clashing with them. Travel and Fish Sat, arrive tea time Social Sat night, girls arrive if they want too, [maybe BBQ or other idea] Girls depart after breakfast [early] long fish on way home. would June/eary July be good for fishing Tom? Shytalk Can I have an indication of which boats/members would be interested. Charlie

Tom Do you still have contacts down there to get a concession on berthing costs as per the WSF meet? If we mad it a PBSBAC meet over a weekend then I would be surprised if a few of the girls would not join us for the social side [if we want them too ] I am sure wendy would be up for that, if others were coming. They could drive down , cook the tea, buy the beer , sleep onboard, cook breakfast then drive home when we go fishing But hey what would Will do??? and I am far to big a wimp to suggest that to Wendy Sorry Will could not resist, perhaps we should get you more busy, then you would not get all the big fish like you did last year Charlie

Hi Martin We hope to join in again for a long weekend at least. It depends if it clashes with the Clubs 48 hr comp and what crew are available. It was good last year even though we only stayed the one night. Charlie

Interesting post I think that SOME of the problem stems from people not changing with the conditions. Tom and Adams set up is correct IMHO. size of anchor and length of chain longer than boat. what is easy to change is the amount of warp. on a nice day, average tide 3 times depth is fine. on a strong tide and short choppy sea I increase that to 5 times to allow for the conditions. I also use three ply nylon rope not braid to allow the stretch to reduce snatch. Rob your advice is good, and putting on additional ties is a quick option, but not that much quicker than cutting the ties and changing the position of the usual shackle. The other problem and the one that gives us the most problems is the sea bed type. Near some local wrecks its clay, and a bitch to anchor, as they tend to plough a trough and as the strength of the tide increases they slip through the clay. In other areas there are large stones that jam in the anchor as Dan describes, this not only stops the anchor working it makes the recovery with alderney ring difficult, the extra weight allows the anchor to sink again as you try to get it to the boat. It sometimes needs to be motored out several times . Its a frustrating thing and not recomended when putting the hook down uptide of a big wreck, so much so that I now use a 15kg anchor and chain. I have contemplated carrying another length of chain and two shackles, so that the length of chain can be increased on those days or in those areas when the damn boat will not stay put. Charlie

Sounds good for me Looking at the dates Adam that is leaving Poole on the Thursday 6th [ebb from 0700] back Sunday 9th May, subject to lucky with weather of course. I agree its a few weeks early for the cod grounds. If that is the generally agreed dates, I will start to talk to our contacts, on the Island. Bring it on Charlie

Found this on Alderney angling site http://www.visitalderney.com/documents/Ald...SinglePages.pdf Charlie Not sure what are the best size tides, if we can not agree ourselves I will call Mark for advice.

Just read through 15 pages of last years build up, via the link on Adams second post. It brings back all the excitement of the build up, and reminds me of all the planning required. If you are thinking of coming its well worth a read, then check out the post trip reports can someone add a link? Fingers crossed we can go again, in convoy. Charlie

This thread always grows quick LOL I hope that Adam can fill in the comp dates soon and then we can look to Alderney dates I would like to try not to go on teh 48 hr comp weekend, but if tides and weather are good it could be a plan, maybe go a day early or stay a day late {OR BOTH} Charlie bring it on

I think the tides for the first May bank holiday are too big, and I will be working for a regatta for the later one. I may have to look at taking a long weekend between the two, after going twice it seems important to get the tides right. But the skipper and crew are as keen as ever Charlie

Hi Alan Returned to the Dark Side again then mate. I hope that your return to sail does not mean a return to long calm summers, with no decent sailing breeze [WHO AM I KIDDING of course I do] Seriuosly I hope you and the family have a great time on your new cruiser, and get a few fish on the sugar scoop regards Charlie

I am working on another fishing pass. Sam will be back onboard ship, and Dan is not sure if he is coming. But if the weather is good, I will be keen to start the 2010 species list. Charlie
-
Well done guys There seems to be a few fish about at the moment It was good to be out and not get much of the rain that we had early on Charlie
-
Not many surfers, would want to stumble across that one mate. I think I would need a bit beefier tackle than we tend to use, even to catch the bait. Charlie
-
OMG I am glad you are now back to fishing The stand up comedian job vacancy will remain vacant Charlie
-
I am at work this morning and with the weather its a ghost town, so filling time on here again The boys and I are going out in the morning I hope, so I thought I would check the catch reports. I must say that the December list is very impressive with several fish over 130%. Well done those on the list with the big fish, and tight lines anyone having one more try tomorrow. Charlie
