Yes Alan its hard to keep off the long range forecast and hard to guess what the weekend will bring at any time Mark the lets have a look in the morning approach is OK for the odd trip but when trying to arrange 5 boats or more accross the channel a bit more communication and planning is required I am sure everyone is as keen to get a chance to visit the Alderney fishing grounds as The boys and I are. How is the cloudy water? and fishing generally, or should we ask after you get out on Sunday? Tight lines Charlie

Anyone thinking of going out on the weekend I will need to wait until Dan finishes work and also find out if Sam can fish after work. But weather permitting Alfresco may go out for the afternoon evening, and try to practice fishing a few drifts over a wreck somewhere before dropping the anchor. I may have a space or two, any of the alderney crews fancy a practise? Charlie

I am not sure when and how we intend to get the overall plan together what do the others think. Personally and after Adam spoke with mark it sounds like the tides suit a fairly rapid trip over, with bait stops around the RIPS I also fancy looking at drifting over a couple of wrecks on rouite if we can I believe slack is around 0900 so it would need an early start. But still arriving in time to look for some launce and drift for flatties around the slacker water period in the afternoon But I am new to the Island fishing so am willing to accept advice,instruction Charlie

Tomo Uptiding used to be my favorite method in the pompey area, and as it was prior to braid it was all mono I still use it when I can in the shallower areas and the best around is as you have guessed is around the Dolphin bank. Winter whiting summer rays I tend to still use mono as casting the thin braid is a pain [litraly if a loop catches your thumb] and as others say the thin braid does not set the weights correctly Charlie

Adam It sounds as if you have power assisted movement of the leg for steering purposes but is the control of the steering done using a cable. several engines use that method the commands are passed by a cable from the helm to the leg and the effort to turn the leg is supplied by an engine driven pump. In my case they are both hydraulic. The helm unit contains a small manual pump and is able to steer the leg if the engine is not running, but as Pete says it is less effiecient and takes more turns to move the leg. With the engine running the pressure is supplied by the servo pump. A bit like a car try steering or braking with the engine stopped as compared to with it running. [NOT ON THE HIGHWAY] It will steer or stop eventually. As Peter says Mike, I am not sure how emergancy steering works on a Modern leg, I believe we discussed that on my seacheck and decided that getting it central and using other methods at slow speed toalter course while we head for home would be an only option [Transfer weight, drag line or sea anchor etc etc] then a tow to mooring or drop anchor Hope that helps Charlie

I was thinking of freezing down some bottled water, to use as cooling blocks in the food coolbox. although I do have a 12volt coolbox for food, it may not be big enough for a three day trip. when it thaws we can use it in the kettle. [i still do not fancy using drinking the water out of the main water tank.] Humphrey used to do that when travelling down from London, then used them on the way home for the catch. He doesn't drink tea/coffee so one was his drinking water for the day. Charlie

Well all the planing seems to be coming on, I have had the paper charts out with Tom and the various wrecksites/data bases Following all the recent changable weather I am not over confident in the weather, but by the time of next weeks meeting we should have a good idea. Do those that are going fancy meeting a bit early next Thursday to discuss this trip over a pint. All the research can still be used on another date. I have spoken to Gary and Humphrey today and we may get another couple of boats. Charlie

Adam/Bob My Volvo came with hydraulic steering that works with a servo Pump on the engine and a remote header tank/resovoir The wheel is not huge but the steering is nice and light especially when the engine is running with the servo PP running. The duo props probably also help with keeping teh boat running straight. By having the resevoir it means that the system has a lot m,ore oil than the type that just operate by the pump in the wheel hub. It is badged Volvo but I am sure it is not their make, It may be worth checking with your engine supplier. Well worth having IMHO Charlie

Hi Duncn They do get a few Ling around the Islands But I believe their Spcimen size is smaller than ours so that does indicate that teh NFSA see there average size as smaller. Nether of my boys have ever caught one so I would not mind having a Go if someone has an idea of which wreck is worth a try. Charlie

Thanks Neal Nice eel I was not sure that others wanted to go to the Islands for a conger trip On the tides that weekend the slack times will be short so I expect most will want to try for the flatfish, bass etc May be interested if we get a slack on the way over or back, Do you have any rusty bits in mind?
