I would back up what others have said and get quality rather than quantity I have some very old and still good abu 7000's that i have used uptiding and drift fishing for 20 years or more. for lighter work I tend to also use abu 6000 or 6500 All of the above stem from my shore fishing days, but the fact that they are still going strong some 20 years since I last did any serious shore angling. will give you a guide to the lifespan of buying good ones and looking after them. For other fishing we use Shimano TLD's The boys have grown up using my TLD15 or TLD20 they have survived so well that Dan has now bought his own TLD15 [ Sanction indeed as he does not spend his money freely ] The only exception to the above seems to be spinning reels, where we seem to have a collection of cheaper fixed spools. they are mostly used for breaming and the odd flounder trip and seem to cope well with this occasional use. Great News that other boats are available If we plan for the bank Holiday and its off other weekends may be a backup, although in May I will struggle. It would be great to take 5 boats and Neal your tender would be useful It sounds like the following are interested Alfresco Awol Phaeton Ahoy Court Jester I too will be very happy to cruise at 18-22 knots with stops for bait and some drift fishing on route. we will try for the extra bait for the other boats. I think all boats will struggle to accomadate all crews onboard so perhaps its time to check what is available on the Island.[Anyone want to volunteer for that?] All info on the fishing, tides, baits etc required will be very useful [shytalk?] Weather and clear waters permitting it must be a chance to have a go at the Clubs Turbot and Brill records With some excellent back up fishing if the water stays cloudy [Tope, Bass and Bream] Bring it on Charlie

Wow I would love to take modern tackle, modern anglers and Alfresco out in an area like that. I suppose Norway is the best on offer now. But its a long steam Adam I agree When I was a lad growing up on the Bristol Channel and Mad on fishing. I heard stories from the older Members of my fishing Club of the wonders of "Chesil Beach Cod Fishing" As soon as we could drive friends and I set off for this mecca, to find dozens of tilley lights all along the huge beach every night. and reports of one or two big cod. We never caught one,in many attemps and soon the lure of the "Chesil" faded. I personally think that we all do very well to maintain the catches we do, and continued increases in PB's and Club records from our dwindling fish stocks. I am sure if we had to revert to the tackle, boats and lack of nav aids of my youth we would be very dissapointed. But it is still worth it IMHO, we just have to appreciate the good days more when we get them

Just shows that we can not base all successes on the theories, planning and preperations. some times its just down to luck. and at the moment getting some decent weather to get afloat in Charlie

A Mate had one for a few seasons Quite a nice boat and seemed to handle the weather, felt like a big boat for 18ft. but They need a bit of power on the back. I remember her being a bit tippy if you tried to walk around the cabin instead of working the rope through the front window. Charlie

Nice to hear that you are planning some exploring to the East end of Club waters, and are targeting one of the Club records. We wish you luck in your quest, a little bit of which always seems handy in our chosen hobby. My info on stinger fishing is to pick a warm period, fish in the shallows with a flooding tide bringing warm water in over the Sun Baked hot mudlands. Large ragworm baits used to be favorites. That said the biggest one I ever had onboard [34lb] was caught by Wendy when fishing for thornbacks off of Hayling Island with mackeral So what does that tell you? We too are hoping to fish new grounds for us this season, looking for a few PB's and maybe stretching a couple of Club records. Very Tight lines Charlie

Thanks Great to have an incite from the Islands, Bass Tope and Bream prospects sound good if the Flats are effected by the dirty water. We have not met yet, but if we had I am sure you would know that the boys and I do not usually need forcing into going Tope fishing I have been to Alderney many times on the Boat I worked on but never on my own angling boat, we are looking forward to getting an opportunity If you are willing to PM me any starter info for fishing around the islands we would be gratful, and perhaps we could meet for a beer and chat in one of teh many pubs if we get across in May Thanks again Charlie

Paul The first two times we were invited to join the Burnham Club to fish with them on a freindly match in their Program. As the other post says Its hard to call which is the better day, sometimes preparing on Sat to fish all day Sunday messes up the whole weekend for the FPO But I am sure that if we fished all day Sat, preps would be on Friday night, Fish Sat, Clean up Sunday. Not sure if that is worse, it sounds it. Charlie

It is expensive stuff Adam but worth considering on a new Build I decided instead to go for an Epoxy treatment International gelshield 200 and then Antifoul with International Interspeed extra. The coppercoat we use at work is from wimborne call them on 01202 888802 they will talk you through it. We use it on new Club RIBs but it is a bitch to apply and get a good finish. Other products are available that are not epoxy based and are easier to appply. Charlie

Its been a question for a while and I see this year that we have added one comp on a sat as a sort of trial Personally I work quite a few Saturday mornings and very few Sundays Dan has also started a Sat Job I seem to get permission from the FPO to fish Sundays, as if we are out socialising on Fri or Sat we do not have to return on time from fishing [Not good at that] to get there If I do not drink because of fishing the next day it means Wendy can and I drive. Which seems to go down better. Charlie

Thanks for the tips for Burnham The south coast wrecks are a bit slow for pollack at the moment but that should improve soon and there are some eels about. Certainly likely to be bigger than up in your stretch. So I hope you get a few if the skipper anchors up. Where do you fish from? Charlie

I have now seen my workload for the early summer and seem to have the first May bank Holiday clear I see from the tide book that the tides are just coming up to Springs. Weather permitting I will have a Pass to take Alfresco across for the first time, [birthday treat] but have a few questions 1. do the Members who have been before consider the timing and tides good enough to make the trip viable? 2. What are the target species? Ether around the islands or on Route 3. Would anyone like to buddy up with their boats? 4.I am not sure if Sam will be able to come, if not I would have space for 2, if he comes only 1, but I am afraid sleeping guests onboard would be a problem. 5. would someone like to give me a starter on areas to fish and catch bait etc [ Treated in confidence and respected of course] If the admin team wish to move this to restart the Alderney thread please be my guest.
