  12. Thanks for your response Dave, I've just ordered the kit and the relevant C-map max. By user card do you mean a blank memory card to upload onto? Stuart
  13. I'm looking to upgrade Sea Dream's GPS plotter, an old but serviceable Garmin GPS 126. I would like the ability to view detailed charts on screen which I don't have with the Garmin. Several professional skippers have recommended Standard Horizon as being easy to use and good value so I'm looking closely at the CP180. I've also looked at the C-Maps available and presume that the central English Channel chart would be the one to order. I'll be connecting it to the ICom M505 fixed digital radio and looking at the details on both items it looks like this should be no problem. I also think that the external ariel may receive better signals than the internal ariel model. Is it likely that the wiring already installed may connect directly to the new plotter? All comments will be much appreciated. On the WWW Gael Force have them listed at
  14. Good luck Mike. No doubt your friendly turbot will welcome you as usual. Stuart
  15. So sorry to hear of your unexplained damage Charlie. Hope you are able to have it repaired successfully. Will insurance cover it? Stuart PS - I hope we didn't cramp your style at Old Harry during the bass comp - I'm still learning.
  16. Left Cobbs just after 8.30 and tried for sandeels without success so motored round to Peveril Ledge (Saw Small Fry on the way round - honest!!!!) Mackerel came quickly so tried numerous drifts with them and artificials without success. When the ebb started against the wind the standing waves made conditions awkward so next stop was Old Harry - A flotilla here, Alfresco, Court Jester and Small Fry all drifting the ledge. We again had no success but second cabin boy Iain had one positive take which didn't hook up. Then realised that there was nothing coming from the engine tell-tale so motored into Studland Bay, followed by Jim. After dropping the hook Iain managed to get a jet from the tell-tale again so we set off into the Bay. Thanks Jim for hanging around with us. Drifted in the bay for an hour or so and the same problem, no water at the tell-tale. We made the decision to creep slowly back to base keepind a wary eye on the engine temperature. At Cobbs Sea Dream was lifted onto a cradle and close inspection of the tell-tale - with the muffs on - showed the same problem. Pulling out the tell-tale bung out dropped the smallest sea snail I've ever seen. I've pictured it alongside a dressmakers pin for comparison. Lessons learned - 1) safety first. 2) the tell-tale bung comes out easily for inspection - but not so easily at sea where it can't seen. Another great day afloat and more for the memory banks - Great to have fellow club members around for peace of mind. Stuart

    A Little Laugh

The local news station was interviewing an 80-year-old lady because she had just married for the fourth time. The interviewer asked her questions about her life, about what it felt like to be marrying again at 80, and then about her new husband's occupation. "He's a funeral director," she answered. "Interesting," the newsman thought. He then asked her if she wouldn't mind telling him a little about her first three husbands and what they did for a living. She paused for a few moments, needing time to reflect on all those years. After a short time, a smile came to her face and she answered proudly, explaining that she had first married a banker when she was in her early 20's, then a circus ringmaster when in her 40's, then a preacher when in her 60's, and now in her 80's, the funeral director. The interviewer looked at her, quite astonished, and asked why she had married four men with such diverse careers. She smiled and patiently explained, "I married one for the money, two for the show, three to get ready, and four to go."

Have a good day Brian - don't forget the factor 20!!!! Stuart
  25. We got out at 8.30 with a calm sea. First stop was between the swash and the training bank. It soon became obvious that we wouldn't do well here as a trawler was plying its trade up and down the same area. A tub was all we could muster. Then to the sadler bank area where the lack of tide meant we were drifting. Only mackerel obliged - no interest from anything else at all on bait on or near the bottom. We went a couple of miles further out seeking tide but again were limited to drifting. We did manage a scad among the mackerel. The wind increased more than forcast so we motored gently back to Studland bay for another fruitless drift. Another great day afloat. Lessons - must plan better with tides etc - should have considered going west with such a low neep. Stuart
