  1. Happy Birthday Martin!
  2. Well done Terry. Incedentally, this thread gels very well with a realisation that I have just made. Terry might well get another promotion very shortly, as we are entering the 'Silly Season' of Feb/March where we all, for some reason. seem to make a lot more posts than normal!
  3. If we add, may I propose, Neopreneus Surferusii (Surfer, Lesser Migrating), Mike Fox is sure to argue we need to add Neopreneus Diverusii to the list and with him as club record holder (Diver, Gul as opposed to the more common Diver, Ripcurl)
  4. Probably a gross generalisation but... Majority of "surfers" round here seem to like to ride the wake created by Bournemouth pier. They buy their gear in Hot Rocks or other overpriced high street water-sport-boutique and go down to the beach... The type of person who, if they were in boats, we would call Birmingham navy... All the gear and no idea. Coming from Cornwall I think it barely qualifies as surfing- I've never seen any waves worth getting my wet suit on for! People who use Southbourne seem a bit better informed and tend to be out when the conditions are right, including a nice steady offshore breeze. I think the surf reef is great. It will keep hundreds of these so-called "Surfers" out of the decent waves further west! The reef can only be good for fishing though can't it? Even if we can't drop a line right on the structure, it can only have a positive effect on local biodiversity and add links to the food chain in the area? Or am I justy being overly optimistic...
  5. Sorry Paul, I thought you'd changed your mind! No problem, I'll leave the gate unlocked all weekend so you can grab it whenever you like. C.
  6. Bu on those flat calm days that the surfers hate, we can get out and see what fish the reef is attracting, and what nice BIG fish are attracted by those!
  7. Still available!
  8. Thanks Dave, but as the picture on the front shows a 'curvier' outboard than the one that graces the blunt end of Star Turn, I looked at that site and reckon I need this one. And available from Amazon! C
  9. Absolutely, definitely, unquestionably correct! Welcome Andrew! C.
  10. The prop didn't used to spin whan I was flushing the o/b on the driveway- it's certainly spinning now with far too much enthusiasm for me to try applying any resistance to it! It's a Johnson 50hp, 2 stroke, Electric tilt/trim c.2003 C.
  11. Thanks for all the suggestions chaps. Now that the festivities are out of the way, I'll get my tools out and investigate...
  12. Hi PJ I appreciate the idea, but I think you might be getting the rough end of a swap. Still, if you're serious I'll be at the meeting tonight!
  13. Cod article
  14. Off to Australia
  15. Yeah, I know that (there have been MANY discussions on the forum on that topic ) and on that basis the nose weight is fine as I tow with HMS Pajero. What I mean is, do the jockey wheel weights on the Indespension site describe the weight they'll 'lift' or the weight/class of the trailer that they suit? Winch post is already as far back as it'll go. Really, it's a bit too small. It could be modified, with a grinder, a welder and some steel, resulting in the hull sitting further back on the trailer. ST can be lifted on 2 trolley jacks and her position adjusted on the trailer (been there, done that). The axle can't go any further forward as it is a fixed type with leaf springs, i.e. not held on with U-Bolts. Moving the leaf spring hangers would involve lots of grinding and welding, which would knacker the galvanisation in those areas. If I'm honest, the trailer is a bit too short, but changing it isn't really an option! Meant to say, when I'm not expecting to use it for a while (hahaha) like now (no jockey wheel and poorly motor and too bloody cold) I use axle stands to keep the tyres off the ground. I can then spin them occasionally, service the bearings and brakes relatively easily, and inflate the tyres more easily. I agree, I need to get another set of axle stands (cheap as chips but perhaps not stable enough), or manufacture something to support the hitch end and thereby take the strain off the jockey wheel. Isn't boating fun!
  16. Nope, I still reckon you called upon the Dark Gods this weekend! Anyway, I didn't steal your charger, I was just looking after it for you... Right-o, I'll have a look under the cowling in the morning. I hope it is as simple as that...
  17. Yep, I've been looking on Indespensio site (we get club discount) and had the pnuematic one in mind as the old one was rigid plastic and always getting stuck. Indespension site also gives 'weights' for the assemblies. It's pretty much a two person lift to get the jockey wheel off the ground- what weight do you reckon I should go for?
  18. I think a certain someone who I sat near to on Saturday night must have done the voodoo on me and stole all my luck... After a day cruising around the harbour, about 200 yards off Baiter slip, Star Turn's Johnson outboard made a brief but disconcerting shriek. I throttled back immediately, and the motor was running smoothly. We coasted into the slip and I switched off. At that time of the day I wasn't about to begin investigating the problem and we had made it back to the slip! Today I put the muffs on the engine (yep, I know I should have done it last night, but it was dark and already 0 degrees...) and started up- fine, apart from the prop was spinning with the throttle in neutral. Alarm bells ringing in my head, I switched off and turned the battery off. Turning the prop by hand makes an unhealthy sound and I can feel mechanical resistance, rather than it spinning relatively freely. Does anyone have any preliminary diagnoses? The engine shouldn't fire up if it's properly in gear. Seems to me (not knowing much about ob's) like the 'clutch' has gone. These things come in threes... I'm hoping this is the third, the second being that I blanked at the comp...
  19. Fit nylon rollers and a bunk trailer is transformed! I bought the material off the internet for less than
  20. A big thanks to Bob, Dave and all others who helped me get Star Turn off the trailer at Baiter yesterday morning. The jockey wheel failed on the driveway at about a quarter to 8 and I had to use a trolley jack and bricks to get hitched up to the Pajero. That meant that I couldn't unhitch the trailer from the Paj when I got to the slip. With the water about as low as it gets there, I struggled to get in deep enough to float the boat off the trailer (I don't think Dave realised it sits on bunks not rollers when he started pushing! Something else to sort at some stage) without also having water coming in the doors on the Paj! Anyway following a great deal of heaving the two were seperated, so again a big thanks to all involved. Now, I have new jockey wheel to sort out- any reccomendations?
  21. Well done to everyone who put in the time and effort to arrange, organize and compete yesterday. It wasn't very warm in the harbour, it was so cold that my cooker took about half an hour to fry up the bacon! Respect to those who ventured out past the chain ferry- not much fun by my reckoning. And again, well done Rob!
  22. Star Turn will be in the harbour with myself and Jon Clark aboard and consuming a constant supply of bacon sarnies and tea...
  23. Do we have any weather predictions yet? Was looking a bit uncomfortable in the bay today.
  24. Is this still a 'bait option' for the 16th or have I left it too late... as usual...
  25. Not that I know anything about nuffink or whatever but I keep all my leftover bait and freeze it up. It might be just coz I'm a tight Cornishman but I reckon it will make some nice stinky groundbait for my Bomb in the new year... won't it? Sorry to hijack your post Alun, very well done. I must learn how to deploy that particular rig. Amongst others... Float fishing eh? Bass, flounder... what's next?
