  1. Mike, its not only about how the rope itself coils, but how the crewman hauling in actually coils the rope. If you take a body width of rope each haul, for me, that is six feet, and as you gp to coil, roll the rope between forefinger and thumb, you are putting the natural "roll" into the body of the rope, but also preventing an abnormal twist in the whole coil, thus reducing the amount of space that the warp takes when stowed. Added kinks and twists take up room, in otherwise small locker spaces, they are also an annoyance when paying out warp when you are anchoring, twists which may hinder retreival and Alderney ring slide. Unatural coils in ropes may also reduce rope life. It is actually one of your most important items of safety equipment on board, and is often overlooked, so in a situation of engine failure and the anchor needs deployment at once, a neat coiled rope will spill out speadilly, reducing time and stress when in a posibly endangering situation. 2. Guys, be mindfull, 10mm diameter rope is hard work on cold wet hands, it also can lead to tendon problems in palms when worked on a regular basis. Rich
  3. Billy, I can help out during school holls, either transport wise, or supervision wise. Have you considerred whether CRB checks are needed if supervising young persons?? This may be a spanner in the works, but I'd hate you to be forging ahead with plans, for it to be sunk by something red tape ish like this. Rich
  4. Huge wrasse this time of year Dan on Hanrdbacks.
  5. 50lb and 60lb BS braid!!! What exactly are you guys targetting? Whale sharks? The heaviest braid I use on my Penn 16s is 30lb, thats for fishing 3lb of lead down in depths of around 300 feet, but usual gear is 15 - 20lb braid on all small to medium multipliers, and 10lb on my Sea fixed spools. Heavier braids mean, in general, larger diameters, which give more drag in the water, and thus heavier weights are needed to keep bottom in tide. What is the point in out gunning your target with excess strength in tackle?? Next we will advocating the general use of tuna stand up 80lb class gear for drifting the race!!!!! Give em a sporting chance for goodness sakes!!!! Rich

    New Mould

Adam, after your post ages ago re. the coleman, I actually bought one, and indeed, it does burn remarkably well. However, I now tend to only burn a couple of times a year, when I take delivery from BB, but make enough leads for all of us, including the juniors down in Weymouth, so I'm after a decent set up, which will melt a few pounds and keep it running for a couple of hours. Air temp has a huge influence on stove running times, be it gas or petrol, and I am a tad worried about the heat transferred down to the stove when I am getting towards the end of the burn!!! I am interested in a decnt furnace now, to make enough gear once or twice a year. Rich

  16. Mark and I managed a few hours out on Nipper, launching from Lymington. A few other PBSBAC members were there, all with their own ideas on how to bag the elusive nodder. Our plan, which turned out to be the general one, was to hiy the area south of the needles, and hope the weather settled. No way hose........we got out in the midst of the car park, and the sea was pretty rough, the charter skippers reporting most crews were groundbaiting! We sat it out hoping the flood would improve affairs, and bring a cod or two, alas only doggies, and a building sea, and increasing wind. We sat it out until the start of the flood, but decided to move when it hit about a force six! We moved inside the Solent, not far from where Adam caught the club stinger record, and sat it out there. Holding bottom was hard, all boats around us seemed to be tripping anchor. We did manage a bit of fishing, and Mark was soon rewarded with a fish, a cod of just under four pounds, albeit a weigher. He also squeaked out a bonus Bass, of around the five pound mark, which was duly released. The day ended with a meagre tally of fish, although at least we didnt blank. Back in Poole, he faired a tad better, managing seventh overall, not bad out of 181 entrants. So PBSBAC got onto the prize table again, well done Mark, and well done Gordon on Fugazi. We also had a turn up on the draw.......a couple of rods, and a new landing net...............that can stay in the wrapper!! Well done to all PBSBAC members who roughed it. Tight lines for 2007...............Rich
  17. Happy Bday Chap. How the hel did Mark manage to break the rod that is marketted as "Almost Unbreakable?" Still.........I get a new rod out of it!! Rich
  18. Dare I say it, forecast looks ok, 6mph wind, nil precipitation, slight seas, good vis, but a falling barometer. Biggish tide?? I think I'll have to make up some heavier leads! Mark, have you squid in the freezer?? I have some cuttle and macky. Rich
  19. Paul, sorry mate, neptune has given you your cod for this season!!! Rich
  20. Firstly, welcome to the Forum, Fishface, we hope you enjoy the banter from the best small boat club in the country. Sea sickness......the dreaded scurge of the landlubber. If you find yourself feeling a tad unwell, try not to look down from the horizon, that can send you running to the gunwalls!! If even after a few trips out, you still find yourself heaving, confucious he say man who eat eat Jam Sandwiches for breakkie dont mind being seasick.........they taste the same on the way up as they did on the way down. Enjoy the forum, and maybe join the club, offer your services as crew, get over that land lubber feeling, get out there and catch some gooduns. Rich PS I stall havent caught any guffers!!
