Hi Reg, hope all is well up there in breezy northumberland! Is that the right mix?? Seems a tad rich. Rich
  2. Paul, is this a realistic figure? Have the parameters for persons on line changed since the last record was hit?? Rich
  3. I wonder if those "floats are the size that BigMac and crew are looking for , for the new season!!!! Rich. PS, Al, if the answer is yes........may I crew please???
  4. Tom, I actually spoke with Dave B a couple of years ago, at the bar in the Sailors Return, in Weymouth after the last day of the YYs, and gave him the opportunity to have a look at the club, and perhaps do a feature. With the broad spectrum that the club now has, with all members able to contribute in some way, my belief is that at least one article could be put together, which would make the Boat section of any magazine proud to publish it. Yes, many new things have been shown in the mags, but Adam made a point in an earlier thread, where you can set your weather watch on whichever article is due to appear in a forthcoming mag, all you need to do is flick through a few previous mags from, say Nov, Dec, or Jan, for a cod article, which are pretty much the same, and the same faces appear in these atricles, with pretty much the same information. One article that springs to mind was the feature on the lead makers, called the Cannonball run, which was basically a huge plug for them, and gave very little gen on specific leads, colouring for match fishing, se of leads for different tidal aspects etc etc......which is what I would have expected from a feature such as this. Far more anglers partake in shore fishing than boat fishing, for many reasons, mainly, it being a cheaper option of catching Sea Fish. Boat anglers, most of which these days are in fact Charter anglers, take a back seat in most mags. we in this club are very fortunate, in that we have members who are more than willing to take newcomers, and I include myself in this bracket, to crew with them, and give them a taste of real boat fishing. I have been very fortunate(......or you guys have been very unfortunate!!!!!), in that I made contact with Bob F on another forum, which has more bitchiness about it, and I finally joined this club, joined many of its members on their respective boats, and eventually, allbeit three years down the line, made a substantial investment in a shared boat of my own, which gives me the oppertunity to experience the great days out that I have had. I have also made a number of very good friends through this medium. This is one aspect that a mag could pick up on, it is a local issue, which local boat anglers have made a reality, and my belief is that the PBSBAC is the best small boat club in the south of England, if not the ountry, and that is down to everyone involved in it, from the chairman down to the newest member. Boat fishing and small boat ownership is not something for the elite, it is available to anyone who really wants to do it, and this club truly shows the way here, I'm just sorry that many many other anglers who aspire to own their own small boats do not have the oppertunity to see what a small boat fishing club is all about, and to me, apart from forums such as our fantastic one, pat on the back Paul, anglers could see what small clubs are all about with features on them in the glossies. Perhaps we should have an overseas section where we can take our girlfriends and wives who can sit on a boat in their bikinis and catch dorado, red fish, tarpon and the occasional billfish to promote the PBSBAC, then maybe the mags would like to include us, the platform of boat fishing in the united kingdom, in their pages, by perhaps taking two less adverts for the same boats and the same GPS units, which go out of date next month, and including a feature on the backbone of boat fishing. I am in no way slagging Dave, who obviously has the character and expertise to perfom the dutes of an editorial role, but maybe take off the blinkers!!!! You are more than welcome to crew on the boat at any time, Dave.............as long as you contribute to the bacon sarnies!!!!! Rich
  5. Martin, I think your final response is pretty much a sum it up one. Dave, I do buy the mag regularly, however,I understand it is difficult to please all of us, but I have seen a change in recent months. With other glossies having a few years on BFM, it must be dificult from an editorial point of view to try something new, which hasnt been tried once before by other mags. I will keep an eye on the mag, but as yet, am not convinced for a subscription!!! Rich
  6. Paul, I still have a few three size tip ring kits I bought in the states.........cheap at

  8. Am I just being picky and cynical, but having just picked up this months BFM, isnt it going the same direction as the other big two sea fishing monthlies?? Who really wants to read about editors larging it in the sun with their girlfriends?? Surely this aspect of fishing in the sunshine has been covered before, before that, and possibly beofre that?? Do we want to see another picture of Ray Barons cod set up?? One third of this months edition is put over to advertising, very similar to SA and TSF. I appreciate that its the advertisers who fund these mags, but at three quid an issue full of adverts, I can see why I have stopped buying these mags monthly. On the plus side, there are a couple of interesting articles, but you can visit different sites on the net and get the same, if not better reports on subjects like Kayaking, for example, without shelling out three squid. Zippy's and Specimans write ups are superb on their forum, and with plenty going on, here on our own site, one has to ask if the glossies days are numberred. Rich

Charlie, Paul, Martin, thanks. I will grab some pouches and bring them along. Intention is to have a small double sided info leaf to place in each pack up. Rich

    Laminator.

Guys, I am in need of a laminator to finish the pack ups I am making for the Bass project, in order to supply a small pack for members boats to have them handy for that unexpected bass capture!! If anyone can help, may they bring it to the club meeting, so I can laminate leafs to pop in each pack up please?? Thanks in anticipation, Rich
  11. Gary, the finer points of the Bass trophy in our open was to receive a card on the day of the comp in a pack up, then get out and catch your Bass, weigh it and photograph it alongside the card, to establish that is was actually caught on the day. On this forum, under the Bass Project header, there are a couple of Bass length weight charts, which give a reasonable weight for your caught fish. Scales bounce at sea, and anglers will obviously go for the heaviest weight if they know a decent prize is at stake. There was a 50% specimen size for ALL fish weighed in at our Open, and I personally feel that this worked very very well, with plenty of fish being returned alive to the sea after the weigh in. I only saw one dead fish in the sea, at the weigh in, which was a LSD, so the 50% minimum at scales worked well for conservation. We did have a 50% for the Bass, but very few were in fact caught, either through not being targetted, or just being later in the season, so the trophy went to a very small fish. These fish dont travel well in livewells, so this isnt really a viable option, especially when most small boats aren't equipped with such luxuries!! So perhaps a photo as evidence, along with a length of the fish and the weight will give the judge a reasonable idea of the size of fish caught. The charts we have on here are from studies done over a period of a decade or so, by CEFAS, who are paid to deliver this data to the Government Departments who require this info in order to update current legislation. If you wish, I can get hold of a copy of the data for you, so you may download it onto a lappy, and run it on excel. One thing that this chart doesnt allow for, is skinny fish, which I have found were quite abundant later in the season this year. Fish that should have weighed, say, eight pounds by their length, were in fact a fair bit lighter, so the weight charts do not take this trend into account. Whichever you decide upon, please post back, so members may have the chance to enter. Rich
  12. Hi Gary, a good idea in principle, but one has to consider the target species and the pressures upon it. If the comp is for the largest fish, then if you intend to have a "weigh at shore comp", then only a certain year group of fish will be culled, which obviously has implications upon the pyramid of fish in our waters. If the comp was to be run along the lines of the Bass trophy put up by B.A.S.S. in our own club open this year, then I for one would be interested. I am personally not up for a slaughter of fish for a trophy or cash prize. Far too much work is currently being done, not just by PBSBAC club members, but across the board Nationally to safeguard our Bass stocks, which a competition targetted at this species, may undermine. It may be that you have already considered this, and have plans in place, if so, then yes, I am interested in a catch and release comp, but not in one which involves unecessary culling. Rich
  13. All I can say, Paul, is..................Mustellus!! Rich

  21. Seems like our gaff is totally distorted.....good job eh?? Rich
  22. Forgive me if I'm wrong, guys, which I probably am, but surely the length to beam ratio must be a major factor, which determines when a vessel broaches?? The shorter vessel will surely broach before a longer vessel?? Also, centre of gravity is a major player here, inboard dieseels carry far more weight lower in the craft than the weight of an outboard stuck on the stern, and so help stability. Rich
  23. Steady on shag.........Ive shaved!!!!
