^^ ouch thats a bit OTT! i see what your saying tom B,, he tries to act stereotypically "american" with the whoopin and hi 5s whenever he pulls something in, weather this is him, or just his poor attempt to "blend in" i dont know,, but it definately gets to me! much better to mute when he is speaking, then look at the pictures and whatever the normal alaskan / canadian / etc... is saying! saying that,, imagine flying to ur fishing grounds, drilling a hole and catching them with a lame lure and a spike! ours is a navman, and rings like an old mobile when it looses the gps signal (i.e. we turn the plotter off). you have to press esc to stop it

teachers often use the water analogy.. but that flops at the first hurdle... the easiest one is a tube of marbles..... where as u push one in one end (push being the voltage...), one pops out instantly the other end.... and their movement can be simply shown as the current.... though that is a bit of an uber simplification...

not fishing the cod comp eh? Dan

possibly, but was kicking, rather than the dustbin-lid persona i have had with a ray before,,,, we were thinking conger,.. though its hardlyh the ground for it! the trace ( i wrote leader earlier... oops!) had parted very close to the hooks, as the glowing muppet i was using was still on the line! Left poole around 10,30ish today, with the intention of fishing on dolphin sands, after dropping the lobster pot on poole patch. First mark was right on the top of dolphin, where we waited,, and waited,,, and waited,,, and waited..... not a nibble from anthing!!!! After about 3/4 hour we decided to move to the edge of the sands, in a gulley ranging from 18m to 13m. More luck in here, catching about 7 whiting, of which 4 were kept for the pot! however as the tide slowed, so did the fishing, with the whiting easing off, and only a couple of pout biting the hooks (god there annoying....). With the slackening tide, we decided to move inwards towards Xray, as we had been having no luck with Mr Cod! Got there a bit too early (around 2 ish), and ended up sitting in slack water waiting for the tide to turn, so nothing happening on the rods! In the end we started to pack up around 3 - 3.0, leaving one rod over with fresh bait as we filleted the whiting and packed up the rest of the stuff. Just as its being reeled in, we get an ALMIGHTY pull on it, of something well hooked. After about 2min, its still pulling line off with a lot of drag, neither me nor the fish making much ground, but a big kick in it! Unfortuately, as you can guess by the title, the 60lb leader snapped / bitten at the hook (not the knot pulling through, as ther was no 'curley' bit) , leaving me with a gutted face and an empty line! ahh well better luck next time! Dan oh and the weather was amazing! flat calm and not another boat in sight! 26knts all the way!

Fished off a friends MF 805 on saturday, after leaving from the hamble, with the intention of getting some cod off the Needles... Unfortunately no cod, but the pout down there wont be eating for the rest of the winter, after devouring 5lb of squid over the day, catching around 40 of the bug%ers! interestingly (or not as its only pout....) they were only biting on one side of the boat,,, despite 6 rods being out, with same rigs, baits etc..... (though they were biting 8/0 hooks,,, and not even nibbling 4/0s... explain someone!!!) Continued fishing until it was dark, as it was a great day (weather wise!) with flat water, warm sun, and around 30 other boats around (so we MUST have been doing SOMETHING right!), but unfortunately we were in pout-central, so no cod, conger, or anything that can bite a hook and pull a 8oz weight...... Ah well..... Dan

just had a second look at the surviving knot after it has been under load, and it doesnt look to good! the trace line comes out of the knot at 90 degrees, looking as if it is bent over by another part of the knot ( ? ), which wouldnt be too strong! Dan
-
just tested it know, dont knot about a 100%knot, but was definately stronger than the others, breaking at 44lb. Interestingly, all 3 tests have broke at the swivel, rather than the hook. looking at both eyes, i expect this is because the swivel wire is of a finer guage than the 8/0 sakuma mantra extra, so exerts more pressure on the line ( pressure = force / area ) So far this is the strongest knot i have tested, with the perfection loop being the weakerst ( interesting for me, as all my hook snoods were tied with this on the end for ease of changing ). I dont think this knot broke at the knot (the coils going around) but instead at the point which it goes round the eye, were i suppose the stress isnt in the direction the mono wants it! (along its length) Dan
-
thats one flippin strong knot!, despite looking fairly flimsy with only 3 turns! tied it today onto an 8/0 sakuma mantra, with 2.5ft of 60lb mono, and a 1/0 swivel on the other end tied with a uni knot.... the uni knot gave way at 38lb. Then tested on a new bit of 60lb mono, with the centauri knot on both sides,,, knot broke at 38lb again (the same as the Uni knot previously), interestingly at the swivel for the second time.... on that basis i think i will stick with using the UNI knot, as it is much easier to tie, and can be tied to a high standard consistently ( i found using the centauri it gets messy, with loops overlapping each other) Has anyone got any recommendations for a knot to use with thicker mono (60lb +) as well as lighter mono (25lb amnesia), other than the uni knot? Not very scientific, but i hope this helps! Dan
