We are coming to the end of the year for the 2013 species comp and I was wondering if members wish to continue for next year? I have been running this comp for the past 3 years and I am willing to pass the controls onto anyone who wishes to run it. If you wish it to continue for another year please add your Boat name on this thread so I can start a new matrix. Thanks Dave

Just to let you all know, I infact was in Wessex Angling a few weeks ago and saw some Mustard shortie neoprene boots for £35 I have since used them and found that they are great for me with warm feet and no slipping around, even Alan tried them on for size! Thanks to all for the suggestions however. Dave

Bob Horne Memorial Flounder Comp - Sunday 8th December
Coddy replied to Neal's topic in Competition Talk
Hi Charlie Spoken to Neil and we are both watching the weather, at the moment most sites show approx 14 - 16kts Westerly which if I recall is not too bad in the harbour. Like most comps, weather is unpredictable at best and it it a bit early to make a call but I would suggest that unless it gets worse I would suggest it will be on but that's a call Neil & I will make a bit later but I am sure we will make it asap to help people getting bait. Would have thought x2 25hp engines would be under powered. Dave

Does anyone know where/whom I can get a screwed reel seat replaced on my Abu conolon rod? Dave

I was at the Wessex AT meeting the other night and the discussion was with the Hampshire Development officer and of course money is the big issue as with all aspects of government and local government schemes to get coaches to train youngsters and bring new blood into the sport. I think it is time to seriously think about whether having to pay a rod licence to Sea Fish. The biggest problem that I see is sea anglers will always be the poor cousin to freshwater and game anglers as they have to pay to fish. I can hear some of the arguments that what will the licence fee pay for and who will police the system etc. but until sea anglers start putting money into conservation fights and showing that with all the other income and jobs they support they need to be listened to. This survey will at least show the amount of money sea anglers spend in pursuit of their hobby, it would be interesting to see how much other sports such as golf is spent via its supporters. Dave

Forgot to add the PDF info including map Poole-harbour-speed-limits.pdf
-
Must have got it before they made a charge

I was asked the other day about the speed restrictions in Poole Harbour. The details are quite clear: The speed limit of 10kts & 6kts in the Middle Ship and North channels is lifted from 1st October to 31st March. There is a Mariners Notice from Poole Harbour Commistioners about this http://www.phc.co.uk/downloads/notices_mariners/2013-33-poole-harbour-speed-limits.pdf What the notice is saying is that the speed limit is dropped from where the Wareham channel enters the harbour all the way to Brownsea Castle in the Middle Ship Channel and North Channel. From Brownsea Castle going seaward 1400 metres of South Haven Point the 10kts STILL APPLIES! All the remaining areas in Poole Harbour stays at the limit of 6kts Don't forget that the harbour patrols do prosecute speeding craft and the fines can be VERY heavy! Dave

Here is a report on some of the results of the 2012 Sea Fishing Survey carried out around the UK Full details of the report are here http://www.resources.anglingresearch.org.uk/sites/resources.anglingresearch.org.uk/files/National_Angling_Survey_Report_2012.pdf Dave ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Two Billion Pound Spend Highlights Huge Value Of Recreational Sea Angling. Recreational sea angling in England supported over two billion pounds in total spending and supported over 23,000 jobs in 2012 according to the results published today of Sea Angling 2012 – a survey of recreational sea angling activity and economic value in England. The results from the project – which was set up by government body, Defra to find out how many sea anglers there are, how many fish are caught and returned and what the economic and social value of sea angling is—also estimates there are 890,000 recreational sea anglers in England – two per cent of the country’s total adult population. As well as the huge economic impact sea angling contributes to England the report estimates that nearly four million days of sea angling took place in England last year with an estimated 10 million fish being caught and up to 75 per cent released alive by conservation-minded anglers. The vast majority of sea angling took place from the shore, followed by private boats and then charter boats. Sea anglers contributing to the surveys identified improving fish stocks as the single most important factor for increasing participation in sea angling and declining fish stocks as the most important factor in declining participation, highlighting the huge benefits of more anglers spending more money that could be provided if fish stocks were restored and managed to cater for the £2 billion per-year sea angling sector. However, motivations for going sea angling in the first place highlight being active, being outdoors and relaxation as the most important factors for sea anglers. The report also highlights many other social, environmental and health benefits that individuals and communities get from sea angling. The project, which was carried out by Cefas, the Marine Management Organisation, social research company Substance, and the Inshore Fishery and Conservation Authorities, comprised a range of surveys which took place between January 2012 and August 2013. This is the first time such a comprehensive study of sea angling has been attempted in England and presented huge challenges for the project team. Total Sea Fishing contributor, David Mitchell said: “This report highlights the immense economic value of sea angling and the role it plays in many coastal communities throughout England. More people angling more often will lead to huge economic, social and health benefits for individuals and communities, with only very limited impacts on fish stocks in most cases. What we need now is to see fish stocks restored and angling to be seen as the major player in the management of some species. The evidence is there – we must now make sure it gets turned into policy.”

I was invited out on Allan's Fisheagle with John, a non member. With an early start to get the best of the flood tide, we headed out to a spot where we knew we would get some fish of some sort and it did not disapoint. We had about a dozen good sized whiting and too many doggies to count. John managed three Blonde rays albeit about 2lb each! We were later joined by Serenity and Frisky Fox No cod or rays but it was good to get out and we enjoyed the bacon buttys supplied on board, we did offer some to our ajoining crews but they needed to clean up their boat and get an outboard to get the best flavour of cooked smoked cured bacon! We returned back to Parkstone at 2.15 to miss the low water and it was good to get home before it got dark. Thanks to Allan and John for a great day out Dave

Hi Andy and welcome to the best Boat Angling club on the South Coast I am the Safety Officer so if you would like to improve your safety or knowledge I organise RYA training where we get great deals from one of the local schools. Check out the Safety sub heading and see if any of the courses are of interest then let me know and I will organise it for you, Also worth a mention that as a club we recommend that you have an RNLI Sea Safety Check, these are totaly free where an experianced safety person comes down to your boat and makes suggestions on how to improve you and your crews safety should an incident occur. In fact we have a couple of the team in our club and they keep their boat down near you, again just let me know or see Mike Fox's thread about this subject. Stay safe and warm Dave

Following todays foray on a rolling swell I found that my trainers are worn out for grip. I was thinking of some shortie neopriene boots but can anyone else suggest some good footware for boats without slipping about. I don't like wearing normal full size wellies on boats Thanks Dave

Many thanks to Allan on Fisheagle in offering me a trip out with Jan. When I picked up Allan the wind seemed calm but by the time we loaded the car with gear the wind had started to pick up. By the time we got to Parkstone there was a good breeze blowing. We left around 9am due to lack of water any earlier and all headed out to the 50 50 banks. All seemed calm until we cleared the shelter of the land and then the sea swell and wind was quite noticiable. We rocked around abit until it was time to go at 2.30. Managed t get a few fish between us Whiting Jumbo pout Tub Gurnard Bass Spotted Ray Dogfish Dogfish Dogfish Dogfish We found the kennels! no Cod however Thanks for the trip out Allan I think it would have been too rough for small boats so seemed Neal & I got it right. Dave
