  2. Competition rules for Summer Species Hunt – 1 of each species to be counted per Angler – top angler wins. I am sure it would help Neil if each angler posted the number of species caught Dave

    Stolen Boat

I recieved this from Harbour Watch: We have received a new claim for a Boston Whaler that has been reported stolen from a swinging mooring in Poole. The boat is a 1989 15ft Boston Whaler called ‘4-Play’ with a 90hp Yamaha on the back, it was last seen on Thursday 18 July 2013 when the client used it, when they came back to the boat on Saturday to use it again, it wasn’t there. Can you circulate this email for me please and see if there might be any witnesses/leads? If anyone saw any thing or sees this craft please contact the Police. Dave

    Poole canoe

Hi Jon I would suggest a 9hp outboard would be good, I know many would have used the good old Seagull engine but a bit noisy and smokey for these days in the harbour and I suspect it would upset the "enviromentalists" as well Dave
  6. Mick you have an email Dave

    3 Bearded Rockling

The Shore Rockling and the 3 Bearded both have 3 barbels. However, the Shore Rockling is a more uniform overall browny colour and has a double dorsal fin and does not have the mottling/spotty appearance of the Three Bearded. Specimen weight for the Wessex Region is 1lb 8 ozs. Distribution: Found in shallow inshore waters all around UK and Ireland. More common in rocky or mixed ground. Feeds on: Scours seabed for marine worms, prawns, shellfish and small crustaceans. Description: Long, eel-like body with very long dorsal and anal fins. Colour varies but is usually orange/brown with black spots creating a mottled pattern on flanks and back. Three prominent barbules around mouth. Scaleless skin can be quite slimy. Rockling are not really targeted by recreational anglers and are usually caught when they take baits meant for more worthy species. However a three bearded rockling of over a pound is a decent catch and despite being nicknamed ‘slug’ by anglers (due to the fact that they are slimy to the touch) larger specimens can actually be quite attractive fish with their bright orange and black colouration. Due to the unfussy feeding habits of the three bearded rockling all of the commonly used baits (ragworm, lugworm, mackerel or herring strip, mussel, razorfish, peeler crab and squid) will be in with a chance of catching a rockling if they are presented on size 1 or 2 hooks and cast into areas of mixed ground, with the sheltered water of rocky harbours, breakwaters and groynes often proving particularly full of rockling.
  9. Hi all It looks like someone has knocked me off the "members" listing as I can't see the whole forum I am a paid up member - honest! Dave
  10. me thinks it should be longer than 14ft for a Mersey Lifeboat! :-) Any news of the problem Adam?
  11. Any security is good, however some thieves remove parts of an engine which is suspected to be to an order. This can happen anywhere even in marinas! One of the best ways is to mark various components with DNA paint and advertise on the boat that it has this security marking. It has been noticed that those who show they have taken precautions with warning stickers, suffer less than those who don't. The other benefit is that if anything is stolen, and the police recover items, the police can confirm that it doesn't belong to the thief and then they can arrest him/her and you may get the goods back Dave
  12. Happy Birthday Bill Hope you have a good one Dave
  13. Hi Pete I too moved down to Dorset from Sandy in Bedfordshire so I know your old area well. Welcome to the club and now you are a club member you can see some marks I have listed to help new club members started to find some fish. http://www.pbsbac.co.uk/ipb/topic/5646-new-member-club-marks/ Hope to meet up with you at the BBQ for a chat Dave
  14. Perhaps it might encourage anglers to participate in things like the Sea Angling Survey 2012 so that records and fisheries can be proved. This was the one of the reasons for the survey. I suspect that many RSA put their heads down saying "this will mark the end of sea angling" or "this will bring in rod licences for RSA's" so I won't respond to any questions if asked or submit my catches. Dave

Happy birthday guys Hope you had a great day Dave
  20. Neil Can you please clarify what age a junior is up to? I might join as I am feeling "young" at heart today Dave
  21. As Martin says, I am only to willing to help anyone practice anchoring and retreiving There is nothing like practice to build confidence in what you are doing. I will admit I too have lost an anchor just the otherside of St.Albans head, however I should have noticed the bottom was very rocky and the chain got wrapped around rocks I think so not a lot I could do on that occasion. Pot ropes and old sunken nets can be a major problem and I have even tried to pull up cables before now!! A lot depends on if you swing in the tide and your anchor type as some are worse than others. Just drop me a PM or call Dave

  23. Just a gentle reminder that if you are changing your line, mono or braid, that you cut it up into small pieces as the wildlife can still get caught up in it on the landfill site. Dave
  24. Perhaps admin can make a sticky so others can add good Fishing/Boating Apps for smartphones. I got told of a good app for the Iphone last week-end called "Boatie" It has Navigation, Weather, tides, Tidal Streams & Referance sections. It is based mainly on the South Coast and a bit Yachty is some of the things but you can add and amend it to suit your own things. Not sure if it is available to an Android but it only costs £4.99 So far it looks good to me Dave
  25. Well done Lofty sounds like a great success Well done to Neal & Martin stepping into the safety boat request. Tony you need to get your week-ends better organised instead of missing the fishing! Dave
