  1. Having talked with Neal, comp sec, on the grounds of safety it has been agreed to cancel the comp this week-end due to such a small window of reasonable weather. I am sure some of the larger boats will go out anyway so please take care as the wind gusts will make it uncomfortable out there. Neal will post when the comp is to be re-run Dave
  2. Call me insensitive but what the hell were they thinking to do those sort of things in that weather! If was an organised event I hope they get named and shamed. Shame they had to put others at risk to rescue them Dave
  3. Poole and District Sea Angling Association meeting Broadstone Conservitive Club @ 8pm
  4. Why not run both comps together on same day. When you have had your fill of Cod you can then go after the Rays
  5. Next round is on 5th Nov I understand that Mark Lloyd from Angling Trust did turn up and voiced his concerns Good news so far
  6. Just an update in that I have had a positive response from two councillors already Dave
  7. Just as a note Mark Lloyd has offered to attend the council meeting on Monday if it would help. Now that is what I call giving some commitment! Dave
  8. Hi everyone I have just recieved a statement from Mark Lloyd Chief Executive of the Angling Trust which I have copied to here: Save Weymouth Angling Club from Eviction Weymouth and Portland Borough Council has been served Weymouth Angling Club with a notice to bring to an end the lease on its harbourside club house so that it can be demolished to make way for a car park. 113 year old Weymouth Angling Club is one of the best in the country with over 400 members and a thriving junior section and has been based on the site for nearly forty years. The Angling Trust has offered to support the club in its battle with the Council and has issued an appeal to all anglers to contact local Weymouth Councillors before a crucial vote at 10am on Monday 21 October. Details of all Councillors can be found at http://webapps-wpbc.dorsetforyou.com/apps/democracy/councillors.asp .The highest priority councillors are those representing wards in Weymouth, as well as Ray Banham the Liberal Democrat Mayor. All the members of the club are furious about the proposals and frightened for the future of their club if the Council decides to demolish their club house to make space for more cars. They point out that there are plenty of parking spaces available in the nearby Pavilion car park, and there is a park and ride scheme in operation. Weymouth Angling Club Chairman Billy Short said: “This club house is of vital importance not only to our members, but also to the economy of Weymouth, because angling visits generate hundreds of thousands of pounds in income for the town. People come from all over the country to fish in and around Weymouth. To lose it for a few more car parking spaces is tragic, after nearly 40 years of us operating from this site. We are determined to fight this all the way.” Mark Lloyd, Chief Executive of the Angling Trust said: “these proposals have sickened anglers throughout the country. Weymouth is one of the most important ports for sea angling in the whole of the UK, and just last week hosted the Angling Trust’s National Boat Championships. The Council should be celebrating the fact that it has a thriving community club in the heart of the town providing – sustainable and wholesome activity for young people that teaches them about the sea, gets them in the outdoors and encourages healthy eating. Instead they want to knock down 40 years of angling heritage, destroy a 113 year old angling club and create a few extra car parking spaces.” List of Councillors Jane Hall, Weymouth East, Conservative John Birtwistle, Weymouth East, Liberal Democrat Dominic Lonsdale, Weymouth West, Conservative Richard Kosior, Weymouth West, Conservative Colin Huckle, Weymouth West, Labour Contact them here: http://webapps-wpbc.dorsetforyou.com/apps/democracy/councillors.asp as soon as possible before the deadline of 10am on Monday morning, and let them know what you think about the proposals. There is also a petition where you can sign into http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/save-weymouth-angling-society/?utm_medium=email&utm_source=system&utm_campaign=Send%2Bto%2BFriend I am sure if this was happening to our club we would want as much support as we could muster so lets help our fellow anglers, do send your thoughts to those councillors listed above and sign the petition. Dave

    New boat

The one I have which was suggested by the Police (Marine Section) who came along to one of club meetings, suggested Selecta DNA Charlie Chapman, our ex- club sec, managed to secure a good deal from the company and we purchased a batch well below normal retail price. Suggest you PM Charlie to see if he has any left. It was suggested by the Police to put your marks in no-obvious places as well as keeping photo's of your items especially if they have any marks or scratches which would act as a double ID opportunity. They tried this stuf out on the prop nut of a outboard and 6 moths later it was still visable, it was not suggested that this was a good place but they wanted to see how well it stood up to water, vibration etc. Dave

    New boat

Can I make a suggestion, please get some DNA coded security marking for your engine and electronics as the "tea leaves" are always looking for something to pinch. I think Charlie has a few packs spare. It may not stop them but at least the Police can identify them as yours if the get hold of any interesting bits and makes a prosecution easier. You also stand a better chance of getting goods back as well. Good to hear the boat is comming together. Dave
  16. Stuie & I have just talked and as we are a "small boat club" we are going to CALL OFF the comp for Sunday on the grounds of safety. It is a bit marginal, however the wind has swung more Westerly and there will not be a lot of shelter even in the harbour, plus it looks heavy rain for most of the day which could affect visability. So Comp is OFF for this Sunday. Not sure if and when Neil will re-arrange the comp when he returns from holiday. Dave

  18. Just found this on YouTube Picture quality is poor but it was taken 50 years ago! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JZLcV65Ou6M Also found this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IplZOuANTMg which shows the Beatles performing at the Winter Gardens in Bournemouth in 1963 Dave
  19. Hi Steve Anything about and around our coastline I am sure would be interesting, would be good to see how things have changed. Perhaps some of the original members of PBSBAC have some photo's of when the club first started and its members boats? Dave
  20. Having looked at various other fishing club web sites many have photo's and short stories of what the fishing was like back in the 60's, 70's and 80's and I was woundering if any members or non-members had any old photo's of Sea Angling in those times around Poole that they could share with us all. Pictures of fish caught and the boats used would be really interesting. Perhaps one of the mods could make a new thread heading under "History" or something more suitable. What do other think? Dave
  21. If anyone is interested there is some interesting info about inshore netting around Cornwall and how the RSA have started a petition to get it banned up to the 10mtr chart datum line plus loads more info. http://cornishfed.weebly.com/conservation-and-fisheries-protection.html Also the site as a whole is very interesting Dave

    Doggies & Bull Huss

Good views on how to identify the LSD & Bull Huss

    Bull Huss

A member of the shark family this robust fish arrives inshore during the months of April and May and leaving inshore waters during December as Sea temperatures drop. They tend to be nomadic creatures feeding alone rather than in packs like their closely related cousin the dogfish. Bull Huss can reach double figures in size and a fish over 10lb is considered a good catch from the shore. Location Larger specimens are often caught fishing over rough ground, with rock fishing locations being a favoured venue. They like to roam kelp or weedy areas in search of food. Bait Mackerel, Bluey, Herring and Launce provide plenty of scent that the Huss can locate amongst the ground you will be fishing. They will also take squid and cuttlefish; try cocktail bait consisting of Mackerel and Squid or Cuttle fish and Launce. Keep your baits small no longer than 4 inches in length and 1.5 in diameter, this stop you masking your hook point and ensure a good hook hold is gained on any hooked Huss. Rigs: There is only one rig for bull huss and that’s the tried and tested pulley rig, just because of the ground you are likely to be fishing, you need to get the lead up and away from the sea bed as quickly as possible to prevent it snagging. The pulley rig does this well, and clips down and casts brilliantly as well. The hook link needs to be 60 – 80 lbs, this is because bull huss have teeth! Yes, they may not be very sharp, but they can and do wear through hooklinks in lighter breaking strains. I usually use 3/0 or 4/0 Vavaris big- mouth hooks mounted on a pennel rig for the business end. I like the pennel rig for holding the bait on neatly, you can use single hooks if you like, and some prefer them especially if fishing really snaggy ground, but I like the hooking potential of the pennel rig. Additionally I think the presentation you get with the pennel rig is ideal when using larger baits, as the top hook holds the bait in position, and prevents it slipping down, which can reduce hook-ups.
