    Seahorses

Hi all Can anyone please advise as I have been asked if a Seahorse is a fish? I am unsure so open the question to the forum Dave

  4. What a cracking fish Well done mate, good to hear that you got what you were after! Bet you havn't stopped smiling At least you can tell the lads at work "it was THIS big" without stretching the truth Well done Nigel Dave
  5. Sorry to read the bad news Paul Regarding mooring security, did/do you use a chain to the bollard? My thought is a rope would be easily cut. Could the chain be extended in the anchor locker and padlocked to a point in there. This would keep the padlock out of the elements. Perhaps a combination lock would be better as no key to be lost! You can wrap the chain in canvas to prevent chaffing of the chain to the boat. I am not sure how to secure the engine hood cover apart from a thick stainless plate over the lever/catch. Security screws are the cheapest option for the windows I suspect. Re the electronics, have they been etched with your post code or written using ultra violet pen? Best to take off each time or have them permanently built in. Additional thought, could you fit an alarm & flashing lights if the cabin door or lockers are opened like a burglar alarm system which would need a code to turn on and off. Found this http://www.maplin.co.uk/t22-b-boat-gps-tra...g-device-398824 if it helps. All seems a lot of hassle just to stop some thieving scumbag from helping themselves to others hard earned pride & joy! Keel haul them (slowly) if they ever found the culprits! If I can help in any way give me a call. Dave

Hi Shane I assume you meant Tohatsu engines not to buy? If so why? They are made by Nissan, many manufactures use them with their brand name on them and they are used for racing and many commercial boats use them because they have found them to be reliable and economic. Even the RNLI use them (re-badged due to internal politics) Would agree better to spend
  12. Hi all I was invited out on Alan's "Kind of Magic" today as we had a weather window I was happy to accept. We set off from Cobbs just before 9.30am to get the bridge opening, whilst waiting we meet Frisky Fox also waiting for the bridge. Alan has, as some of you may know wanted to sort his boat's prop out and recently had his boat out for ant-foul and the fitting of a new prop, so today would be a good test time as well. Going out through the harbour it was noticable how much better the boat responded to the throttle and the speed increase was quite dramatic bringing her to the designed speed limits with ease. Back to fishing, we headed eastwards with a small slight chop to the water mainly due to wind over tide but nothing to worry about. We got to our mark and it quickly became aparant that I was going to be the kennel master as it seemed every LSD homed in on my bait. Alan managed to find a nice small bream but nothing else seemed interested so as the tide turned we woved a bit furrther Eastwards. As the tide increased so the LSD seemed to have found my bait again but at least I was catching fish! We both suggested a move again and just as started to wind in I got a cracking bite, another doggie but no not this time but a nice whiting of about 3/4 to 1lb We sat for a bit longer but no more came along so move time again. This time we headed inshore looking for a new mark, which we found but nothing was happening so as we had to be back on the berth by 4.30 we had a short drift, both of us lost our end tackle on something so we called it a day and came home. Thanks Alan for a good day out in great weather and flat seas and managed to get the first whiting of this Autumn on your boat. Dave

Charlie In answer to your question, as far as I am aware there is no by-law restricting the amount of bait removed. There are plans to introduce a by-law to restrict a bait digger to a maximum of 3lbs of bait per person per day (suggested limit) but this have to be approved and passed by the authorities. I suspect this or these by-laws will be in other locations along the South Coast to prevent wiping out the rag/lug population. Concerns are being raised as to have some licenced operators, of which there are none at the moment as far as I am aware, who may have restrictions placed on them regarding volumes taken out as there is a need for bait to be supplied to tackle/bait shops for anglers to purchase. I am of course talking about "bait digging" and not bait dragging which is another subject/debate altogether. As soon as I hear anything more positive I will of course report back. Dave ps Rob, that bait diggers leaflet must be old as it still has the NFSA logo on it.

    Trying to find info

Nigel you are a star! Been searching everywhere, knew I saw it somewhere. ---------------------------------------------- In case anyone has not seen the post on WSF I have coppied it below: (Quote) A mate of mine was bird watching with a couple of pals at xchurch harbour yesterday aft. Scanning all over the place for birds with their bins. On the other side of the harbour, about 700metres, he spots someone fishing. So he kept looking over to see if he was catching anything. After a while he noticed the "angler" wading around in the shallows. He could'nt work out what he was upto for a while then the penny dropped. He'd set a net,in my mate's estimation about 30yrds long. They watched him pull the net into the bank, with what looked like some nice mullet & Bass in it. At this point the phones came out! It did'nt take long for the local baliffes to turn up & shortly afterwoods an envirement agency landrover. Well he must've been getting quiet abusive by now as two police cars then showed up. Not quiet sure what happened after that. But my mates pal got a phone call this morning saying they were going to prosecute him & he was a known local commercial fisherman. Apperently he had some big mullet & some nice Bass hidden nearby. I've seen a few of the photos my mate took with his long lens&what i can't understand is why he's wearing a bright dayglo jacket in broad daylight in a busy harbour. Obviously not playing with a full deck of cards. It just goes to show it's worth knowing the right telephone numbers to call should you see this sort of thing going on & it's worth it. Hopefully this spanner will get a hefty fine for his trouble. (quote end) If you see a net illegal or not you can report it on 0800807060 free of charge you dont need to give youre name and they will take immediate action to check it out. Dave
  17. I am sure someone very recently posted details of an incident at Christchurch Harbour regarding illegall netting. I can't seem to find it can anyone help please? Ta muchly Dave

  21. Hi Bob and welcome to the forum I think it very unwise in this day and age to bury your head and say these issues do not affect me and will not take part in any initiatives. Like most things in life you have to make compromises and whilst we all would like to catch fish on every trip, or any fish come to that, we understand that with the current state of sea fisheries some resources are now scarce. Can I suggest that some of the suggested proposals are simple bag limits on certain species, e.g Bass, Cod, some Rays and skate and I am not suggesting on all fish. Unfortunately many RSA go out and try to fill their freezer with every fish and size and like some commercials keep every fish caught. If we take Bass as an example, I am sure we as RSA would be happy to keep a couple of Bass for the table and return the rest to fight another day but for many of us to catch a couple of Bass every trip would be great but the reality is we don't or even can't catch fish that regularly. I know some anglers can catch a target species almost every time and well done to them but I am sure they return the majority of fish caught. So my point is if you set a bag limit of say 2 or 3 sizable fish to be caught and kept per angler per day I see no problem, the other advantage of having a bag limit, it allows IFCA officials to check ANY boat to see what has been kept and this would apply to licensed craft as well as the private owner, this would assist the officials in stopping the sale of black market fish from un-licensed fisherman. I am happy to accept bag sensible limits as it is a hobby for me, but the commercial people have got to play along with similar rules and stop discards. We need to ensure that there are fish for our children and our children
