  1. We fished further inshore than planned last weekend, and it was quieter than in mid season, but there were fish about and a couple of big bites were missed. There are fish out there , congers, rays are probably teh best rod benders but whiting pout and dogs should keep the bites coming. I am away so Dan has jumped ship, and will be out on Sat Tight lines all Charlie
  2. Hi all A little update on the Volvo Eventually got a call back on wed to de-sypher the message from the EVC for the boat. Apparently the code refers to which black box and which fault is noted. [Why it can not be easier to translate they could not tell me, especially as there is a readout on the tacho that tells you to check the engine and read the book , but does not give you a clue as to what fault you are looking for] My message was the same as Bob and Adams, basically low fuel pressure on the gallery rail. as the engine is 8 hrs from a 200hr service, I asked straight away if it could be a fuel supply issue, to get a reserved maybe. Off to Salterns to collect a set of Fuel filters, after checking that they will not change them again next month. Dan walked over at lunchtime from work today and by the time I got away from the office had changed 1 filter and was working on the second, that ones a little trickier as its connected to the water detector, but together we soon had them done. spiliges cleaned up and engine running. After work he came back and we spent 15/30 mins flat out blasting around the empty harbour at 30 knots, Dan enjoyed that No alarms and back to full power Its a shame It took so long to realise it was fuel and not coolant that was sounding the alarm, but it appears sorted now Only the next long trip will tell But I hope that it is Charlie
  3. According to the News He does not have much in the way of qualifications at all No VHF, First aid, sea survival etc etc etc It also said he was found to still be alive after the police noticed that he was still showing on the sex offenders registry sounds like a nice chap NOT
  4. Mine is slightly differant Adam 1 Find multi meter 2 turn on 3 look for spare battery 4 go to shop buy another battery 5 check readings etc etc 6 phone Volvo and wait and wait etc Charlie
  5. Well we went out at 0810 on a calm sea heading for distant rust but just outside the harbour the engine warning sounded, we edged out a couple of miles as the code says a minor fault. then fished in the cold and later damp We caught plenty of pout a few small whiting, before a short move a few more pout and then Gordon had a medium sized small eyed ray. Dan had a couple of terrific bites that although nearly pulling his new rod overboard dropped his mackeral head. so there are still some fish out there. the day was spoilt by an alarm Volvo thought was fixed, but the very fresh air was nice, and the new rods seem good. Salterns are going to get very fed up with me if they do not sort this out soon. Charlie
  6. I think congratulations are due for you for researching the questions and answers Education is always time well spent
  7. Sorry can not help I have been looking into getting one as well But can not seem to find a low priced option cmap or Navionics gold and ideas would be appreciated. Charlie
  8. Nice one Bob. If you dont believe it try it. [in a safe well ventilated space.] Usually if you disconnect the positive first you get a spark Negitive first you do not. As a I believe that a charging battery gives off hydrogen gas you do not want many sparks around Charlie
  9. This idea is very worrying to me. We have no idea how the Fisheries would translate any signal raised by this. We also do not know what numbers are involved. 6 per species, 3? Less ? Is that per angler or per boat? Is that per day or per trip? Remembering back to last years discussions about bag limits in the channel Islands for charter boats from the UK. It initially read as nothing to panic about. Untill they got down to serious discussions, Bag limits then discussed were for the whole trip and low It would have stopped a lot of boats going over, and spending a lot of money on the Islands in the evenings. For me trips to the Islands are not about topping up Ice boxes, but bringing some fish home helps to justify the expense to FPO. [ to be honest, 2 flatties and a few pollack would be cheaper in Harrods] I am not one to top my boat up with dead fish, We catch and release a good proportion of what we catch when we can. But sometimes when in deep water Pollack and Cod do not go back well and more are retained for the table because of it. Usually we try to change plans and target other fish at these times but its not always possible. I would not like to steam to mid channel, hit some quick fish and then because of a voluntery bag limit, that has been changed to a byelaw, have to cut my fishing day short. What would be even more against my principles would be the thought of RSA's disposing of edible fish as any form of over quota/bag limit. just to keep bigger fish. Definatly the thin end of the wedge, and I am not convinced that if this does not apply to the people who take fish for profit. there is any benifit in it. I believe we only have 5 sea fisheries officers from Lyme regis to Littlehampton. I can not see how they can possibly enforce this, without leaving the commercials to do as they wish. As someone said on Thursday night we are a much softer target. All that said. The PDSA have asked us to discuss this, and we have started to do so, which is good. If those discussions can convince me and others that it is worth persuing. Perhaps just Perhaps and after very serious discussions with other interested parties some good could come of this. Charlie

    Snow go!

The reason Paul did not come to the Club today to go out on the boat at lunch time in a bit of a blizzard Charlie
  11. Hi All I have just received this from Alderney. They have since confirmed that the Diesel Price is for all diesel purchased as they are not subject to the extra charges we are. Dear Charlie Sorry not to get back to you yesterday. Rupert is currently off island but we have agreed that we can offer you diesel at a cost of 60p /litre as long as nothing dramatic happens to fuel prices. We could confirm this price nearer the time. We are in the process of sorting out some kind of petrol delivery system but are awaiting States approval. It will hopefully take the form of a 220 ltre bowser and costs will be slightly higher than the filling station but it will be much more convenient. We can also offer your group a reduced taxi rate of
  12. Hi Adam One of the lads here at work has his own He did several labels for me, black letters white background. MMSI NO Ships callsign Labels for the lockers Gas shut off Fuel shut off Lifejackets Flares I used the RNLI ones as patterns and got Mark to make more permenent ones. I paid him a little to replace tape used. If thats what you want, list what wording you want and sizes and I will ask him to quote. I could take a picture if you want more detail. Charlie
  13. Thanks Mike That's the stories I hear a lot in my office. Well done Adam, I thought you would when you realised how painless it is, [Now where did I put that sticker?? ] Charlie
  14. Happy Birthday Paul I hope you took the day off , I hear on the radio that snow is bad on route to where you work. How is it looking for your fishing tomorrow? Have a good one Charlie
  15. Of course I do Paul Charlie
  16. Just to Clarify I ran the list past a very experianced cross channel Yachty who works with me at the Club. He also fitted out his yacht, and goes to france several times a season. It was just in case. If you had an engine problem at the top of alderney race you could easily be carried towards france and rescued by someone who takes you with tide towards cherbourg rather than beat against it to Alderney. French authorities would want to see; [ and I know yachties that have been asked for] Proof of ownership and VAT paid, major bills cover this and I carried copies of the biggest 5 for alfresco, mouldings, engine, windows, rails, etc Passport Fuel if you are going in to a french port with spare diesel in transportable tanks it has to be white diesel. SSR registered and number shown [Mine is yet to go on, oops] you get an on the spot fine if they find out of date flares on board [ Dont panic Gordon, I didn't mean your trousers ] I left my recently expired ones at home and put them back on when I got home. Its down to you guys, nobody at the Club is going to insist. certainly no intention of mine to get over zelous, just passing on tips that I recieve from people who know. Charlie
  17. Thanks guys Soo far I have Alfresco 400l Joint Venture 280l Quest 2 240l AWOL 300l Marsel 2 300l White Magic 300l a total of 1820l and two top ups each I will get back in touch with Alderney and see what he offers Charlie
  18. Good point Paul Thanks for bringing it up The other point for boats going accross, is check you have the right safety equipment. etc Some of our Yachties get caught every season. You may need to be aware that as you are so close to mainland france, The french are very keen on some things, and like instant fines so conform to their rules. Ie be SSR registered Canrry no out of date flares onboard Have no spare red diesel onboard in containers Carry all documents in date onboard including proof of ownership. Charlie
  19. I have been watching an oportunity to get out come and go a bit The boat is ready, the crew full and very keen. Just the damn weather to keep an eye on Winds seem to have increased a bit and now we have the end of this cold stuff to contend with on a medium tide. But Maybe just maybe we can get out at last Anyone else tempted? Charlie
  20. Have a great one Tom Charlie

  24. I attended a health and Safety training reminder recently. and the message seems to be changing. Even the HSE seem to be admitting that common sense can start to prevail. and openly admitted that If the job takes 30 mins or less there is little sense in spending hours setting up safety platforms etc. you can get the steps out. That is of course steps that conform to the correct standard, are in new condition and are used by trained operatives
  25. Looks like there is going to be a lot of people looking for a bed. also can the owners/skippers let me know what fuel requirements they have, as I am trying to work on a bit more bulk discount in Braye. Rough amounts and when I intend to fill on day two and again on last day if I can, around tides. probably total about 400 ltrs or more depending on what fishing we do. As I said earlier we can buy it all at Braye at the equivilent of commercial rates, which IMHO is worth doing, it will help keep the costs per head down I would rather buy 400 ltrs at their prices than here with the 60/40 split making it 20-30p ltr dearer depending on where you buy fuel and how much. Charlie
