Hi all Some very in depth discussiions on this one. Let me add a little. Most outboards come with a range of about 11 props listed to them. But are supplied with a Standard Prop [ The most common size for that engine] The Hull size shape and total displacement weight then starts to take effect. and will determine wether the prop is correct. The worst part of running with the wrong size prop is that the engine is overloaded at all speeds if the pitch is to large. If the boat is standard with a common size /type of engine The boat builders would know from trial and error what size prop should be used. but they may recomend more than one size depending on the use of the boat. A ski boat may drop a size to allow for towing the skier and a smoother pick up. If it is older, non standard or you have changed the engine is can be checked. The engine needs to be running well and the hull clean. Fill the boat as normal with crew, equipment and liquids then give it a full speed run into and out of the tide flow noting the maximum engine revs, If you do not have a fitted RPM gauge a hand held one is required. Check the maximun engine speed that is listed for the engine and see if that is being reached. if the RPM is low the prop is to big on Pitch or Diameter [usually Pitch] But is only worth changing is the differance is over 300 RPM as new props tend to change pitch by 2" which is about 300-400RPM. Existing prop pitches can be adjusted by someone like Prop Revelutions at Cobbs Quay by about an inch +200RPM. Putting the correct prop on does reflect on effiecancy and running cost as well as stopping the engine being overloaded [ which can cause long term damage] The cost of the change [ally prop] would be recovered from fuel cost savings. If the boat has been oK with the prop before and the prop is not damaged the lack of revs may be caused by another fault that a new prop would not fix. I hope that helps Charlie

Hi all, I read and enjoy all of the forum posts about the recent fishing around our area. But I usually check it in free moments at work or home and do not have a printer or the fish book handy. But can I have some emailed/phoned catch reports for the book Paul was good enough to add this function to the website can I ask you to use it. It would be a shame to get to the end of the month and not have fish in the book because the only mention I heard was a general comment on the Forum. I know I am not one of the trailered gang But you may want to check out the summer competitions around the portsmouth area. They used to be one on most weekends when the smoothys were around, good prizes and good turnouts I have not fished them since I left the area and replaced the Dory with GW, but if they are still going you would have a good day. The summer Smoothy fishing off Nab and at Selsey Bill is the only thing I miss about moving from Pompey to Poole. Selsey would be my vote, and if you are going when I am free. I would love to take a space on one of your boats. Charlie

Hi Adam Most new outboards come with a small bag of tools that are definatly from the cheap end of the market. but they are plated so that they do not rust away to quick. as the others have said you do not need to carry a full service toolkit as you would find it hard to do anything but the basics at sea. However on your trail aways you may consider taking more tools/spares and leaving them in the car in case the boat/trailer has a problem. The only thing I would add to the others list would be a decent plug spanner, its really a first stage thing to check the plug for signs of oil or water if the motor will not start. Not a bad thing to try with your aux motor, check the plug put it back on the lead and earth it to the block then pull the cord to check for a good spark. I would also drain the carb and replace all the fuel with new. Charlie

Nice to see that the trip went well. It sounds as if the fishing was a bit below Par which is a shame. At least all the boats went well, Nice to hear that Adam's and Mark's new boats had good weather to play in. And the wreck of the hood must be the easiest to find on the south coast. So they are good to test out the electronics. I was working on the boat again so you had better day than I did. an exact report of what was caught would be nice. There were some Plaice reported from the Swash yesterday and Rays up to 24lb from the deeper banks, plus masses of LSD from Old Harry area. Charlie

Adam On some of the deeper marks 35 to 45mtr to the west and the deeper holes at St Albans 55m [200ft] The tide can run very strong with a swell to contend with as well. At times I have had to use most of my anchor warp to hold bottom even with a 25lb CQR and 30ft of heavy chain. My warp is a full coil 220mtrs of 3 strand 12mm Nylon. It is also good to have a long warp when anchoring uptide of wrecks, so that the anchor does not have to be dropped to close. 1. So that it does not get dropped into debris around the wreck 2. It gives you a chance to ensure it is in the ground correctly and react if it is not before it drags into the wreck [Goodby Anchor and Chain ] 3. It gives you more room to recover the anchor when you leave before it hits the wreck as you atart to drift [Goodby anchor and chain again ] Therefore my advice would be to get at least one long warp 200mtrs onboard. My spare is much shorter, but is only for emergancy use should the first be lost Charlie

Back to normal then Duncan, I play with the boat while the boys fish. Have you tried the emulator on the lowrance website to have a practice on how your electronics work? The one for my new 105DFC sounder has been usefull, as the boat has been ashore ever since the set arrived. Charlie

Hi All Its time to get out and Start the fishing Competitions again I can not wait. Hope the boys let me get amongst the fish this year. Bob It would be hard to say the engine was unfit for purpose after nearly two years. The problem seems to be with the repair agent. Is it a recognised suzuki agent? and are ALL OF THE REPAIRS under warrenty. It is a problem with Suzuki, that they tend to make changes every year on some of the parts of their engines. It is difficult to keep up to date with these mods when only using one size of engine [ I used to look after suzuki 140 HP for Royal Marines at Poole] and must be hard if all sizes are constantly changing. That said the computerised stores info should be available to them. Another problem is that most suzuki's are put together dry of grease, so when a part has to removed for the first time they are easy to shear off. I have broken more than a few. So NOT ALL of the above from the repair agent is bulls##t I am afraid. Your patiance has been admirable, I think by now mine would have long gone. Perhaps its time to ask for a free service as compensation for the delays caused by the inefficient repairs. Best of luck Charlie

Hi all You are right about the belief that changing the name brings bad luck. It is said that to get around this a plaque with the old name should be left aboard the boat. I know that this would be done on a ship after re-commisioning but have not seen it on fishing boats. A lot of Charter boats change their names when they are sold, the seller wants to retain the name for his new boat if he has built up good PR and a reputation for the boat. It does not change the fishing on his replacement boat in my experiance. Just call it Dog Basher or something, then you will not have a problem living up to the name. Charlie

After the interest in the lack of pollack that are reported to me on posts earlier in the Year. I thought I would let you know that a few are starting to be recorded. Two boats went out to the wrecks by the RIPs on Saturday and had several on each boat the biggest by a Member was 10lb 1 oz by Neil Bryan on Ow Much. No doubt the deeper wrecks will also be fishing and maybe with bigger fish, perhaps Peter could let us know? My boat is still ashore but others may fancy a trip out to the wrecks if the weather is good over the next few weeks. let me know how you get on. Tight lines Charlie

No doubt that will be as she goes flying past the Great White. Perhaps James would be advised to check out the numbers on your other post about servicing Adam. Poor starting is a symptom of problems that are exagerated by infrequant use. Add New or clean plugs, Drain the carbs and fuel tank of old fuel and water, Fill tank with fresh fuel. Charge the battery fully. and I expect she would go without problems. But a good service is the best idea, [ James now I believe] will not want to tow her a long way and not be able to start her. Charlie

Thanks Paul I don't know where it came from but it came and it got opened. when I updated my virus checker it detected the worm virus on my home PC. Thanks to your help and using the link above it has now been removed. I was showing 39 files affected even after the Anti Virus had healed the PC, but now with your help it is showing 0. Cheers mate, get you a cold one at the AGM Charlie. If any of the Members have had email from my PC recently beware of one with shower zip mentioned. I would advise running a Virus Scan. Thats how I checked and found I had the Ba****d. at least its gone now
