    Sea Check

I would be more concerned about what others are doing out there than if I was showing the right signs when I am fishing. Navigating through the harbour when the Birmingham Navy are about is much more dangerous than sitting on the spoils without a Black Ball up. That list from the RNLI is very extensive and I can see why the Radar Reflector is essential. [should this be added to our list?] but MOB recovery kit, shapes, epirb where do you put all that and still have room for the sarnies and bait? Its a bit more important to have mates to call on when the sh*t hits the Fan, hence the good old PBSBAC. Charlie
  3. Hi all, I have just recieved confirmation from Jim Whippy that James Parker has finished equal 4th in this years competition in the Boat Fishing Monthly. James finished on 185 points and has now won a place in the final on October 29th. a free days fishing with bait supplied can not be bad. The final will be fished on Random Harvest or True Blue out of Poole with the prizegiveing at the Thistle Hotel at about 1600. If I can sneak off work I think I will pop along at the end to see how it went. I would like to congratulate James on behalf of the Club and of course wish him all the best for the final. Whatever the format for the day I am sure you will enjoy it. Say hello to Malcolm and Andy from us, and do not let the pressure of being the local man get to you. Very tight lines Charlie
  4. Hi Eddy and welcome to the forum I to have a lowrance colour plotter [GM5000c] its a great bit of kit and the good news is that the EGNOS system should be completed in early 2005 so the accuracy should improve. I have not bothered to link it to the DGPS on my boat as I am not sure they are compatable. Do you use the Mapcreate to enter and store your marks, if so how do you get on with it? Charlie
  5. Martin Can I confirm My order for 1 case [6 x 5lb boxes] I may have to store some at work, but that should not be a problem Pay on collection Tue Just confirm price and time Thanks Charlie
  6. Steve Britton a former Club member rented a Caravan at merley house for 3 months before emigrating to NZ. It was a nice enough place and knowing Steve it would not have been expensive. Charlie
  7. Hi All, One of the berth holders at the Yacht Club is changing his boat and is advertising the following C Map NT charts for sale at
  8. I find that using the landing net to weigh the fish supports them quite well. then just take off the weight of the net. or I use an old GPO sack which has eyelets in the end for the hook of the scales Charlie
  9. Hi Regarding the plotter, they are a great bit of lit for showing you on the screen where you are and where your fishing spots and safety points are {Waypoints} a basic one does that on a blank screen [which are available on most gps sets now.] A GPS unit tells you where you are with a fix from several satalites and will also allow you to enter waypoints. they usually give distance and course to the waypoint. so assist navigation A Chart plotter takes a cartridge and actally shows a chart of the area, the latest ones are colour and the screen looks like a chart. the waypoints are shown on the chart as is your position and track line. I have a colour one and its a great piece of kit, a bigger budget would have got a bigger screen and more pixels but this one cost enough. and on top of that you have to buy the chart of your fishing. If you travel around a lot thats a lot of money on cartridges. Basically you do not even need a navigator but not many of us would go without one now, the plotter is the next step up and the colour Chart plotter the top of the tree. [That is unless you want to interlink a plotter to a radar screen and an auto pilot.} The anchoring in your area you need a good anchor, Bruce, Danforth or CQR a length of heavy chain at least as long as the boat and a warp of about 12mm that is long enough to be 5 time more than the deepest water you will anchor in. You will need 5 times on a choppy day in the tides around sandpoint, Brean Down or the Holmes. To lift it up we usually use an alderney ring and tow it out, in the bigger tides at WSM that would be important to learn. due to the heavy mud on the bottom in the channel you may also want to rig the anchor to trip out or you may struggle. This method has been covered in the magazines recently so you should be able to read up on it, although it would be better if you found someone to show you. Hope this helps Charlie
  10. Cheers Looks like we can expect more accuracy for 2005 then. Although the position error at the weekend was given as about 18ft, so that is good enough. In fact I have not bothered to connect my New plotter to the MLR DGPS finding marks/wrecks has not been a problem providing the numbers given are actual and not PA Charlie
  11. Very nice that Steves Boat is going to be bought by someone who will look after and use her. It will be nice to see it on the Cod Marks again this winter. Charlie
  12. Adam if you tuck your flares in your boots you will have more room for the brown stuff when you go surfing Charlie
  13. ouch. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  14. Thank U weather guru Just trying to work out if I can sneak a trip wed evening. or keep up the browny points and do a few jobs at home. Charlie
  15. Does this mean that he has only banned British Boats from trawling inshore when the damage is done offshore by the frogs? It seems to read that way, although greenpeace are bound tobe negative Or is this the start of an effort to preserve some life out there before its to late. Charlie
  16. Picture of Daniels Small Eyed 6lb 8oz Beaten by the kids again Charlie
  17. Not logged on last time oops. The other point I missed is that a trip into lulworth/weymouth and a call to other members of the Club would without any doubt have got you all the assistance you needed. I for one would have happily driven over to act as a taxi from the cove or weymouth rather than read about the danger involved and the damage to your boats. others with tow hitches could have helped collect trailers. Always happy to help boaters in peril, especially mates Charlie
  18. Thanks Martin It would be nice to get more than one flat fish recorded. Colin I await your weights Charlie
  19. Hi All I can confirm thet Trevors Red Mullet has in fact hammered the Club record so please add it to the site Paul. Well done Trevor I went out with the boys, managed to get away fairly early to start on the banks at the last of the flood had a few dogs and a small bass in quick order before the tide changed moved for the ebb to a mark that produced some nice small eyes a month ago. We had tope, mackerel a small Blonde 2lb 12 for Sam and later on a small Eyed of 6lb 8oz for Daniel plus many more dogfish of course. right at the end with the wind over tide making it a bit to lively we went in to drift the swash a few times, one small bass and no flat fish later and its time for home. Like everyone [that did not lauch at Kimmeridge] we had enjoyed the day but the fishing could have been better. Charlie
  20. Glad to hear that you all got ashore safe and sound in the end. An amazing report in the light of all that excitement. I am sure you have all learned many lessons that go beyond any powerboat course teaching notes. Sitting in an office in the dry is not the place where the decisions had to be made, but the decision to put your lifjackets on should have been unanimous and almost instinct. we all continue to learn all the time so lets hope that we can all learn something from this. [ARE YOU READING THIS BOYS?] ONCE AGAIN VERY GLAD IT TURNED OUT SAFELY. boats and engines can be fixed bodies take longer. If you need and contacts for repairs call me. Charlie
  21. Holding HT leads or plugs during spark testing is definatly not for wimps. or for anyone certified sane. The old fashioned Johnson spark tester had the sparks jumping gaps up to about 6mm. If they are good for that, they will as Mike says spoil your day. use a decent pair of insulated pliers or a couple of bits of wood like chop sticks to hold the plug/lead and you will enjoy it far more Charlie
  22. I need to organise a freezer for the garage I will try and organise very soon and will order then Can you give me a call before you collect?? if I have a freezer I will take a case Cheers Charlie
  23. Salterns is about the most expensive Marina on the South Coast. and he still has a good waiting list for berths. Even though they have supported the Club every year with a good prize in the Open Comp. I am not sure thats the place to start. But I could well be wrong. Charlie
  24. Its a big task and I think it would tke a lot of work. I know the two Clubs in Pompey that have lots of facilities both have big membership and have to attract people to use the Club to keep them viable. When I was a Member of Southsea Club, they had more people using the Clubhouse for Bingo than to discuss fishing, and the game machines in the bar were a vital source of income. and We struggled to maintain the compound and equipment between the membership to keep the cost down. There is no problem aiming high if someone has the drive, enthusiasm and time to get behind it. I can not think of a suitable site, with slipway and shore side facilities locally, if they are being run correctly they should have waiting lists for at least there marina facilities so therefore they would gain nothing by offering a cheap rate deal to a Club. There is so much demand here for all the available space for various boats, trailers and Cars that accepting more at full rate would be hard, cheap rate deals even in the winter are not available. Charlie
  25. Yes Adam their fees must be a bit steep. Our 16 ton lift at work cost about 80k. even second hand they cost a lot. Thats a big commitment for the Club but some very nice facilities Did anyone notice the boats on page 98 of the BFM, what a fine bunch Well Done James, Adam and Bob for getting in to the BFM top 60 in the Suzuki League. Best of luck in the final James, you must be sure of a place now. By my records you have 185 points and the worst place you could finish is 8th You had better bring Tara this way and start practicing mate, its a bit different to Christchurch ledge Charlie
