You need to know what drive is fitted and what the prop rpm will be after the reduction gears. I presume that the boat has a prop. What you then need to know is the engine rpm at Wide Open Throttle or full power, then you can see if she is over or under propped. The sea trial should be conducted with the boat loaded as normal. Tanks full and a clean hull. You can then compare the engine rpm at WOT to the engines design max rpm the pitch of the prop can be adjusted or the prop size changed to get this right Very worth doing for speed and fuel economy A company like streamlined props in Aldershot may be able to help without sea trials

Madness sure looked nice blasting past in the sunshine yesterday. Nice to see you out there enjoying your new boat mate.

Well that turned out better than expected when I checked the forecast last night and this morrning. Going past the ferry there was a fair bit of swell and breeze, which eased as we crossed the bay towards the piers. Target was a few flatties and first drift Will had two plaice. After that fishing was a bit tough, we moved further East catching plenty of gurnard of two species and a dab. As the tide eased, the breeze dropped and tha sun shone. Back to the piers and a few more spotted target fish. Nice day with Sam and Will 9 plaice and a dab will not set the world alight, but it was fun and perhaps we will do more of that next season. Thanks for the company guys, great breakfast rolls by Sam and Wills famous lasagne and peas for lunch. Good going on a day when I thought we may get beaten by the weather

Many model like my bow one, are fitted with a gypsy that can haul both rope or chain, and stow the rope or chain as it comes off the unit. Some of the ones with a chain gypsy and capstan drum need someone to swap from one to the other and are not in my mind ideal

interesting that several boats use heavier anchors but shorter same diameter chain for deep water. when we upgrade the size of anchor we upgrade the chain size as well. otherwise the holding is affected and the anchor could be heavier than the chain, which prevents it staying in the Alderney ring. Obviously that can only be done when using an Alderney ring, using a windlass the chain has to be calibrated to the gypsy

Allan The other option I considered was changing my original 9.5mm gypsy to a 7 or 8mm one, then swapping the 10m of 10mm chain to a full 30m length of the much smaller and lighter stuff. In shallow water I could then use all chain, which would stow better in the anchor locker. It is the fact that we spend more time in deeper water than shallow, that made my mind up to go for the more expensive side deck option. Be carefull with the size of cables breakers etc that you need for these units and combined weights. My unit wieghs 24kg and the cables are heavy. All of this weight on the same side of the boat as the helm seat and cooker meant that a few things had to be moved to lockers on the opposite side. Hope that helps

Its the limited drop into the anchor locker that stops us using the bow capstan in deeper water. It is a 1kw unit so has power and speed, also a gypsy that takes calibrated chain and rope. Deeper water we have always used an alderney ring and drifted back to recover the warp and chain, with a 15kg anchor and heavy/long chain its good excercise. So much so that 18 months ago I fitted a side deck capstan. 1.6kw high speed (their words not mine) and a good size drum. It recovers the anchor warp a treat via the side deck roller, but its far too shiney to wrap chain around in my opinion. Sure its quicker to haul by hand, but the capstan takes the strain off of the job. It takes up some deck space, but in my opinion is not a tripping hazard fitted where it is. After all we can always use the other side deck. Charlie
