    Up tiding

Uptiding is one of my favorite methods It does at times outfish downtiders, especially in shallow areas with a reasonable run of tide. It does allow baits to be spread out and not all fished behind the boat, but please take great care when casting from a packed Charter Boat or a rocking smaller boat. Our areas are generally a bit deep for uptiding but I still use the method a lot, generally always with a 8oz Gemini style weight and a 4 to 10oz uptider and ABU 7000 with 20lb line any lighter gear will struggle 1. to get the bait to the bottom and keep it there 2. To play a decent fish with the tide assisting it Its main advantages are: 1. Spreading out the baits 2. Getting away from the boats scare zone in shallow water 3. Being able to fish with lighter gear and weights 4. Self hooking of larger fish as they move off with the bait. It takes a bit of practice but can be worth the effort IMHO Charlie
  6. Rich A rope around your waist is easily tied into a bowline with one hand. I say easy, but it takes a bit of practice. [not even sure I can still do it now] charlie Bob I have been trying to remember the name of a knot used a lot in the states. This is an easy knot for attaching clips and swivels and is rated 100% I believe they rate their knots by the percntage of the breaking strain of the line it breaks at. Ie: a knot that weakens the line by friction or compression during tying is rated at a low percentage. Double the line back on itself into a loop, thread on swivel, tie a normal overhand knot with the swivel traped by the knot, then pass the loop in the end of the doubled line over the swivel wet the line and pull tight. I hope that makes enough sense for someone to recognise the Knot, its easier to tie than to describe, but a bit bulky for a hook knot I may try a sketch later Charlie
  7. Hi yes several squid monted in the usual way with a hook in each end is allowed, the upper hook on the trace is used to hold the bait and stop it all bunching up and hiding the other hook Charlie
  8. Nice one Bob
  9. Yes as long as both hooks are in the same bait Charlie
  10. The lady took more stick than our boy did . looks like they also have an active forum Charlie
  11. Martin is it to late to amend the rules now? They are going to be given to the competitors when they sign in so an alteration could be made to those that are yet to be printed. a few flyers around the signing in point could also be put up say "Sharks and Tope can not be weighed in" That way if anyone has a problem with the amendment they still have a choice not to enter. GW will not be landing any that is for sure. If we get one we will be taking photo's and putting it back. Charlie
  12. The trouble is Duncan where do you draw the line????? while flounders will survive and lots of congers have been released over the years after weighing. Other fish have been released that may have won one of the lower prizes had they been brought ashore. As an open competition over a very wide area it would be very difficult to steward afloat. I tried to get Frank alongside for his eel on a reasonable day but could not. but to be honest that eel would not have survived anyway with a big gaff hole in its lower jaw. Its the only comp out of all of ours through the year that fish have to be weighed ashore, so I am afraid we have to accept it for this year at least. Nice to know what others think please post your feelings lads Charlie
  13. Well done all concerned A great way to keep in touch with what is going on keep up the good work Charlie

    Boat Storeage

Hi Coddy and welcome to Broadstone we are not a bad bunch up here despite what MM says, not to many pubs but plenty of take aways and even a liesure centre. Give me a call if you need a guide Charlie
  18. Good Idea Always good to share information, although fishing with the boys I tend to stick to simple rigs, its nice to know what works for others. Charlie
  19. If it increases your Grip, I am not shaking hands with you any more. When we shook after I towed you in the other week I could still feel it when I got home. Have a speedy recovery Charlie
  20. For Info ON the 28th for the competitions Its a good size tide to get a bit of movement for the flounders in the Harbour as well as a bit on the banks outside, with Low Water at Poole Quay at aprox 0420 and 1650 the height at LW on the tide graph looks to be about 0.8m so boats should not have to wait long for enough water to get out after weighing fish at baiter. Charlie
  21. Thanks Rich I had not heard of the shark, but it proves that the water has not cooled to much yet and there must be some fish around to keep such a preditor about. Club record is vacant!!!!!!!! Charlie
  22. Nice to hear a few decent cod have arrived Did you get the big one rich? Charlie
  23. Thanks Coddy Have you done the same for Pan Pan and Pan Pan medico? Charlie
  24. Its always a balancing act to get all the things we need to do done. Add a bit of adrenalin when things are not going to plan and things do tend to be overlooked. I have had a VHF licence for a long time and use it all the time at work, but a live rescue situation still gets nervous, speeds the speech etc I would like a copy of your laminated aid de memoir for the boat and my office please. Not only for me but also for the crew if anything happened to me. {More important than for me] Cheers Charlie

    training

The level 2 course is a good course in basic boatwork, it is targeted to teach people with no experiance to a known level of compatence. It gives you a certificate that is recognised around the word and by Insurance companies. The full course is 2 days, but if you are more experianced it can also be done by a one day refresher course, 1/2 day instruction then assessment. Or by the direct assessment only. You would need to demonstrate to an instructor that you can do various manouevers and have the required knowledge of the rest of the course sylabus. The best way to check would be to get hold of the RYA booklet called "Practical course notes" in there you will find notes on how to do the various tasks that are required. Another book called the "Powerboat Logbook" breaks down what is required for the various courses and is sub devided under 3 headings Knowledge of Understands and Can They are a bit self explanitory, you ether need a bit of knowledge, or to quite fully understand the subject, The Can ones are the ones you will have to demonstrate to the instructor that you can in fact do if you are to be awarded the certificate. As to your first question, I would say use their boat, it will be rigged with all the required gear [perhaps even a double kill cord] and RIB's are much earier to handle in confined spaces, and bounce off of jetty's better while practicing than expensive GRP hulls You also will not need the extra pressure of being sure your boat is working 100% and the worry about launching or scratching it. Have fun its a good course Charlie RYA Instructor [in case you were wondering]
