i will be ringing the changes as sometimes a change of bait can make the difference. I suppose squid does come out tops but with sport being a bit hit and miss i suppose i have nothing to lose with a change of bait. I will also try sprats just to see if this is effective. The plan is to try for bass, then for a cod. The deep gulley is the plan for the cod but will there be bass in the gulley aswel or should i target them in the shallow water just before the slope?

nits, dont worry, thats a sign of clean hair i could never attract them when i was a nipper Nice spread in sea angler Tom

I have a load of squid in the freezer paul, many thanks for the offer though, was just trying to work out if the maccy are still worth taking with me. I think the plan will be to fish on the ledge for a bass for an hour or so then pop the anchore and head a bit further south and try in the gulley. Well thats the plan, with 2 weeks hols owed to me starting on Tue, i should be able to get out a few times and have ago. First session on wed, hopefully out very early (thats if the missus gets over the flue thats kept her in bed, if she dont im going to be stuck in baby sitting:-( If anyone else is out, let me know and we can buddy up(launching from muddiford), or get me on the vhf. Thanks for the tip alun, let me know how you get on 2day

im planning a trip in the next couple of days, looking to bag either my first cod or conger and also hopeing to land a few whiting along the way. Im not going south of the needles as i cant afford the fuel, so its a toss up between the ledge and xray. Has there been many cod or conger been caught off the ledge recently? I have just heard about the needles fish so far. Also is xray any good for either cod or conger, i know a member had a 28lb fish from there last year (may of been Alun) but am i better off fishing the ledge? Also have many conger been caught of xray in recent winters or is the ledge a better bet again? I know squid and cuttle normally produce most fish, but is maccy still any good for a winter cod or would other baits out fish it? Also i have quite a few sprats in the freezer from a recent pike trip, is it worth taking these out for the whiting or shall i leave them at home?

not good!!!! only a couple of hours at my disposal and i only turn up to find that i have taken my bungs out of the boat and forgot 2 put them back. no time 2 go home and get them, so off to Tesco for an early brekki instead and home before i even started. Kam. its a xchurch club water stretch, just need to be a season ticket holder to fish it.

Well, im getting desperate to get Gnasher out, but with the bad weather of late theres been no chance. So, change of plan, launch from wich at 6.30am 2morrow and go the other way up the river. Instead of heading seawards, its up to Tucton for a morning boat fishing for the pike on my club stretch. Will make a nice change, sometimes its just nice to be afloat.

thanks for the net chris. very reasonable price

Alun, a cracking result, plenty of nice bass there, and an early Cod aswel, Pukka!! I need to catch up with you and sort you out some cash for the reel, I might get the reel at the next meeting if im not working, if i am i will give the money to one of the boys to give to you. PJ, was it a big bass? I spoke to Paul D yesterday and i thought xray was the plan to see if the whiting had come in

Personally, i dont add a mono leader, I just have a soft actioned rod with power in the butt and plenty of give in the tip. I also loosen up the drag when a fish is in the upper layers. There is lots of rumours about loosing big fish because of the lack of strecth in the braid but if you play the fish correctly then you shouldnt have two many problems. I just find its a pain to have extra leader knots that could clog up weed etc. Only my personal opinion though, but a leader is the favoured method by most

hi guys, many thanks for all the advice, i suppose i wont really know the difference until i take them off and see. I would of thought that they would of made the fuel consumption better because they help the boat plane at a lower speed and there for get most of the hull off the water and there for out of the way of strong tides, where as if it wasnt up on the plane the drag would of been increased because there is a lot of hull to pull against. im just being a tight ar$e and trying to scrimp on fuel costs. trial and error is the key i think by reading a few of the threads, i think that more prefer to go without them, then with them

usefull info paul is always greatfully received, especially when you are as useless as me, so info on marks etc is brilliant.

i have 2 fins attached just above the prop on my yammy 28HP that are designed to help my boat plane, but i have been told that having these attached will increase the fuel consumption. Is this true? and how much extra fuel would you expect to use? Do most of the other boaters in the club use these fins? (sorry, dont know the technical word for them so fins will do). Also will it increase the speed using these by much? Im just trying to work out whether or not i need them or not. Dan

im still with the xchurch club and in the book it states that any club member can ask to check that you are an up to date member, so thats over 1000 fisherman who could potentially ask to see your permit if they wanted to. Also be careful as the environmental agency could also ask to see a rod licence and if you are fishing with more than 2 rods then 2 rodlicences are required. 2 rod lecenses for 3 rods.
