i seem to remember there are lots of them off the Norfolk coast. they looked like they were quite an attraction tbh and the Cornish countryside has them dotted all over the place. i can imagine the rich people who have paid well over the odds for their sea view may be pretty peeved but no matter where they go, someone will feel/be justified in complaining.

Many thanks for the chain Mike. Hope to see you out there soon (once the weather warms up a little)

A good advert for the boat or a poor advert for the British Navy?

Mine literally drops out at about 5 knots.

our company uses Protyre any time we need a mobile repair/fit. http://www.protyre.co.uk/mobile.aspx http://www.protyre.co.uk/outletsdesc.aspx?id=11059

I will look at that during the week Peter. If I can get my existing setup as well as it should I would be happy to keep it as a back up or sell it. I would be reluctant to sell it as it is, cos it's pants!

Fair play to the photograher for not dropping his gear. That must have been pretty scarey!

I had my transom mounted one fitted professionally Duncan but to be honest I have found it to be totally useless once moving. I am guessing it is faulty or it wasnt fitted properly but I dont know how to sort it so have bought a whole new setup.

I was all geared up to do that Chris, but as my boat is retreived onto a trailer at the boatyard I can see nowhere on any single skinned part of the hull that would not get run over by the rollers on the trailer. I doubt that would do the unit (nor the seal) much good. I have today spoken with MES who are going to take my transducer back and get me a nice new "in hull" one. I think i will feel happier with that. :-). I also find that the skimmer one i have on my transom gives me no reading at all at anything over displacement speed so am hoping that an in hull one will keep contact with the water at higher speeds than my existing setup.

I recent purchased a Garmin 750s radar/GPS/Sonar setup and ordered a "Thru the Hull" transducer believing in my ignorance that this would sit inside the boat and look "through the hull". I have heard that having an internal transducer is about 10% less efficient than having an external one but I was happy to accept the reduction in performance over the hag of fitting another external one. When it arrived I read the instructions (which is most unlike me) and it would seem that i need to drill a 3" hole in the bottom of the boat and fix this thing "Through the Hull" . I must be honest, this does not sound like the sort of thing i feel comfortable doing on a hull that is potentially keeping me on the dry side of a couple of hundred feet of water! Reading through the old posts & threads it would seem a fair few of you are using internal transducers (some even sound like they may be skimmer transducers actually inside rather than hanging off the transome). Do any of you know if my "thru the hull" transducer can be fitted inside the hull in a way that it will work, or do i need a specific type of transducer for fitting internally? Thanks in advance.

are you saying that Shogun is going over the same week as the club Nigel?

is this a fishing trip or a pub crawl

Thanks Martin, I would prefer to save my limited space for fuel tanks and gear rather than a spare boat so if there are other means of getting ashore I will leave my dinghy at home. I will have a chat with my mate and see if we are eating/drinking .... I have a feeling that after our crossing we would probably welcome a nice peppered steak and chips followed by a glass or two of lager :-)
-
I thank everyone for their suggestions and assistance concerning the fueling issues I will encounter if I do actually make it over there. I have consulted with my crew member and we have decided to go (dependent on a very favourable forecast) and have a small inflateable and outboard that I could take if necessary for getting ashore with my jerry cans. So ... the next thing i need to know is ... what is this other "list" that is being added to? Did i hear food and drink mentioned? :-)

I appreciate what you are saying Adam, and there is NO WAY i would even think about it if the forecast was not favourable. I have been mid channel in my Raider before and found the swell was more acceptable out there than when we got back and had a last couple of hours only 5 miles offshore. I am surprised however about the mileage you mention and fuel would be an issue (although not necessarily insurmountable). I assumed it was about 75 miles each way. I have tanks that carry upto 150 litres so would easily make the trip over there without any worries (even if i had to run slowly), the lack of fuel at the harbour causes me slight concern but this is the bit that may need some thought to overcome. As for the trip back, once again I would not even be there if the long range forecast had not indicated that the return is likely to be reasonably weather. I sailed across the channel on a 22ft catamaran when I was 16 and became good friends in 1976 with a guy who had sailed here from Australia single handed on a concrete boat he had built himself. Surely Alderney is a breeze ;-) Seriously ... I note (and thank you) for your concerns and maybe will reconsider, but i do rather enjoy a challange .

I wouldnt really have a problem staying longer if that was required ..... in fact that sounds like a good idea :-) so ..... assuming I am gonna head over on mine, where do you all stay? Is it guest houses around the harbour area? Do you all anchor in the bay or do you tie up in the harbour?

Is getting a little worried that no offer of a crewing position is forthcoming and maybe by the time one does come (if ever) it will be too late to arrange accomodation etc. Maybe its time to remove my name from the list and look at possibly getting a couple of very heavy duty life jackets a very very large fuel tank and tag along in my own boat? The insurance have ok'd it (and they would not ok it if it was too much of a risk) so it must be do'able.

I picked one up in asda a few weeks ago for about

there were two of them, both into marlin at the same time. The picture at the end (of a marlin across their laps) proves they are mad whether they caught it or not.
