  1. Hi Billyboy Sounds like you ended up with a very reasonable day but what is a "Bandfish"? Never heard of one of those. As I am about to move down that way, in temp accomadation, any tips for marks in Portland harbour apart from the Hood, would be very helpful. I have launched at the public slip a few times but never been able to get out far due to weather conditions or crew feeling ill. Regards Coddy
  2. Hi all What interests me is where they tip all the spoil. If they just dump it in the same area this will attract fish as a new haven with any luck unless the tides are strong around there in which case it will soon be dispersed. Suggest that anyone who sees a dredger in the area if and when they get the go ahead should let it be known so others can investigate. Regards Coddy
  3. Thought this might be of interest to some -------------------- RENEWED plans have been floated for dredging Christchurch Harbour and dumping the spoil on Stanpit March and Mudeford Sandbank. An earlier bid to get Christchurch council's consent as landowner foundered over fears the dredging could open the harbour and river to larger vessels and muddy the waters for spawning salmon and other wildlife. But these fears have been dismissed by the borough's former coast protection officer Frank Tyhurst who has drawn up the dredging scheme on behalf of the Christchurch Harbour Association and Bournemouth & West Hants Water Company. He said the operation to dredge some 1,000 cubic metres of material from the sandbar in the middle of the harbour and a similar amount from around the water company moorings at Tuckton Bridge had been planned in consultation with English Nature and the Environment Agency. The work was needed to remove natural silting up of the navigable channel through the harbour and depositing the spoil - mainly sand - on the eroded Grimbury Marsh at Stanpit Marsh and the Mudeford Sandbank was considered more environmen-tally friendly than dumping at sea or in landfill sites. Planning applications for the dredging have been made to both Bournemouth and Christchurch councils and if approved the work is scheduled to take place over the winter before the annual salmon migration begins. Boatyard boss Charles Rossiter, chairman of the Christchurch Harbour Association consortium, said: "It is a pity that this small amount of essential maintenance work has become political. All we are trying to do is make sure the harbour is safe to navigate for the present users. "We are certainly not seeking to encourage bigger boats here, you would need to dredge the offshore bar for that. We have prepared a very detailed environmental impact assessment which suggests that there is no detriment to the nature conservation value of the harbour." -------------------------------- Regards Coddy

  6. Hi Duncan Good luck with the new boat. I looked at the Samurai before buying the Warrior I too think they are a good looking boat. I am sure you will be happy once you get it and start fitting it out. Regards Coddy
  7. Hi Rich Yes there is information on the magnetic variance shown on the map, see the compass rose on any admiralty chart. This was about the 7 degree mark in the UK but this does change over the years and position in the world. The important thing is that you must decide what format you intend to use, i.e. 'Magnetic' or 'True' positional co-ordinates. The Coastguard's seem to use 'True' readings i.e 45 degrees 'True' of Poole entrance, however you must set your GPS up for 'Magnetic' or 'True'. You can always change from 'True' to 'Magnetic' or visa versa on the GPS/Plotter without re-entering co-ordinates. Remember that if you use a compass to go in a direction this will ALWAYS be in 'Magnetic' and if your GPS is set up for 'True' settings it will show a small differance. This all sounds a bit confusing having re-read my message but in the end you must decide which setting you will use and set the rest of your electronics to the same. Regards Coddy

  11. Hi Mark Thanks for the offer but we are looking for at least a 4 bed house as we are having the "In-laws" moving in with us! It has been agreed that they will have their part of the house and we the other. To find a house which has at least 2 reception rooms (to convert one into a bedroom) and the main front door in the middle of the house are far and few about especially when looking to park a boat and trailer plus cars!!! But I will email you in case the FPO thinks this is what we want! Regards Coddy

    Auxiliary bracket

    Sea Check

Hi, I agree with Eddie that small boats can not carry all what they suggest, however This is the Club's safety list: VHF Radio CB Radio 1 Lifejacket per person Towrope In date flares Horse shoe ring -----------------------RNLI Check First Aid Kit Auxiliary engine Anchor, chain +warp Spare warps 2nd Anchor + warp GPS / Navigator Torch Echo sounder Fire extinguisher of appropriate category -----What about capacity? Radar reflector ------------------------RNLI Check Compass ------------------------------RNLI Check Horn / whistle Fuses (where appropriate) Tool kit Bailer Timepiece ---------------------- Standard on most GPS & Plotters Navigation lights (working) Relevant chart So it seems the club has thought of most things. A radio may be useful but it is nice to get away from music/phones and noise when fishing, at least I think it is Under the regs you are supposed to show a ball shape when at anchor, BUT and this is a BIG but "How many yachts do you see with a motor cone raised when under power EVEN when their sails are up?" I have only ever seen one and I have since found out it was a training yacht so I suppose they have to do the "right thing" I will get off my soap box now Coddy

  21. Hi Adam and all For those who feel unsure on what to say and HOW to put a Mayday or Pan Pan call out over a radio I have a downloadable instruction sheet on my web site. http://fishing_boats.tripod.com/ Click on the side menu for "Safety on a boat" and scroll down. Once downloaded you can edit the form by adding your boat name etc on to the form. What I have done is printed the form out then took it to a photocopier and shrunk it down from A4 to A5 then laminated it. I have then tapped it on to the helm position so that anyone can see and read it. Remember it may NOT be you who uses the radio in an emergency but a novice! Hope this helps some Coddy

    WEIGH SLINGS

Hi all I have just purchased one of these slings, have yet to use it but they look very good. It even has a measure inside so it makes getting the size easier. Check out the slings from here http://www.ukshark.co.uk/ Click on the 3rd red spot , Web page for all aspects Then scoll down to weigh slings. This site is run by Sue and Jerry Drake which some of you know for their shark tagging programe. It is also an interesting site about sharks as well Regards Coddy

    Auxiliary bracket

Hi Guys & Gals I am about to fit an auxiliary bracket to my Warrior 165 Which side is best? Looking at the back of the boat, towards for'ard, all the cables etc come out from the starboard side but I also want to fit a bording ladder/step. Is it better to fit the bracket over the cables and have the step over a clear area? Your thoughts please? Coddy
  24. Hi Adam Sorry to hear of your returning trip problems. Whilst I have never experiance such large swells I did have problems getting the boat on the trailer at Eastney slip once. With the tide and swell plus the extra swell from passing boats we had hell of a time keeping the boat straight and on the trailer. I hope the knocks and bangs on the gel coat are not too deep, I have used 'Marine Plastic Padding' to great effect on small nicks and scraps. It is easy to mix and goes off hard quickly, however doo leave it a day or two to properly harden before sanding down. Hope the new engine was not too badly knock around as well, might be worth checking the mounting bolts. Seems like ou might have some work to do before your next trip Regards Coddy
