  1. The weather is always against us Ray, just have to grab the opportunities when it all lines up   Time off----No jobs on at home-----No family Commitments----Fishing weather-----working boat   Things like the size of the tide and what fish are in season are secondary concerns as is Crew availability at the moment.   The good news is you have time off over Christmas and there are some fish about
  2. Not on the powerboat syllabus Rob   But lots of us members volunteer to teach this to new Members every year.
  3. Hi Ray   Using a winch to lift an anchor sounds like a great idea [It is on bigger boats with very heavy kit] but as others have said it may not be required on a 17 footer.   The one on the bow of alfresco works fine but because of limited drop the anchor rope does not stow without help so it is a two man job.   Lifting with an Alderney ring has been the way we have lifted the anchor on my last three boats [17ft, 23ft and 30ft] with practise it is easy to do, even single handed.       Ignoring that and back to the original question. Several choices of windlass and lots of makes are available all at 12 volts the same as your outboard battery.  If you only use them with the engine running, it will not flatten the battery too much. But you are picking an expensive option, as you would also need to fit wiring, circuit breaker and calibrate the chain to the windlass gypsy.   If you would like to talk this through with a local supplier talk to Pete at Quay West chandlers Poole. If you get as far as going down to see him, his chandlers is in the boatyard at Parkstone Yacht Club. I manage the boatyard and Marina there, so if you fancy a chat over a coffee let me know. Alfresco is in the Marina so I could show you my set up if it helps.   Charlie
  4. Great day to be out   Very happy to be on stand by, but with Chris out there helping you were in very good hands.   Very impressed to see Blake out with dad at the end of a frosty week. Sounds like they found the fish too, well done them.   I fished a spot that has served us well , but to be honest it was a slow day. We had a few nice whiting to 2lb 6, far too many dogs and a single tiny conger.   the big rods and large baits did nothing   tried to call you later on but no response. Glad to hear that you were OK
  5. I used to think that fingerless gloves must be pointless as its the fingers that get cold   But since I tried them I use nothing else, even knitted ones that get wet still seem to work.   Do get a bit dirty with squid and cuttle baits at this time of year.
  6. On Alfresco [30ft Offshore] we use 15kg Bruce and 15m of 10mm chain offshore.    Or  10kg Bruce and 15m of 8mm chain inshore.     Either connect to 220m of 12mm 3 strand Nylon.   Hope that helps Charlie
  7. Warp should be 3 to 5 times the depth of water dependant on strength of tide and weather.   anchor chain at least the length of the boat, diameter depends on size and weight of the boat.   Anchor weight depends on type of anchor, plus size and weight of the boat.
  8. Clive at G & C Marine 01202 575260 used to supply and fix them, they are on the Kinson Rd
  9. Are all Club members not therefore Members of the AT?
  10. Far to early to say yet really Ian
  11. Rub it in Sam I will be looking after the little people for you. Lol
  12. happy Birthday Oli Hope that you had a great day.
  13. Brilliant report Fred Very impressed with your efforts , I could almost feel the excitement from here and terrific fish too
  14. 2 packs do not go over one packs so be carefull with that. All the old stuff would have to come off, plus an undercoat
  15. Biggest problem Ray would be putting good paint over rubbish. The existing paint would have to be sanded right back then you could use something like International toplac over its undercoat. We use that on our work boats here at the Yacht Club and they get a hard life. As Neal says talk to Pete at Quay West chandlers, full of good advice and will give Club discount.
  16. Sorry Ian Cannot fish that weekend as i have loaned the boat to Sam and Eileen. Had the comp in my diary for ages. But hey ho. Will still try to fish the 25th
  17. Happy Birthday graham Hope that you are well and see these messages.
  18. agree
  19. Lovely looking reels I am pleased with the 30 2 speed that I have, even if the 15kg drag is a little light for that size reel
  20. I have loaned the boat to Sam and Eileen on the19th so I hope that the Club Cod comp stays on the 25th. If it does I will be looking for crew
  21. All good advice Thanks
  22. Happy Birthday mate Have a great day
  23. Brilliant write up of what sounds like a good day out. No mention of a pink pinny, sounds like mal was busy with his tackle.
  24. Hardly a good experience for angler or the fish But what a dickhead
  25. Keeping an eye on it. But it hardly looks like a 48 hr gap Looks like only Sat or nothing at the moment. Especially as Jayden is coming Probably why this comp used to be booked in the summer
