Hi Tom Thanks for the advice. I'm coming down more on the side of a decent used 165 as my first boat & will start to look around for one seriously in a couple of months. Not done any small boat fishing, so don't have any real style (My wife reminds me of this all the time!) I would like to get into bass fishing & as I said in an earlier post, I'd love to catch (& release) a double figure bass. You said you drift for bass, is this with livebait (mackerel?) - can you give me some tips on rigs etc?? Cheers, Andrew

Hi Guys Thanks for all the advice. Coddy - I'll PM you as suggested. Spoke to Phil @ Warrior today & will probably visit Feb Boat Show @ NEC, Birmingham to have a look @ 165 & 165 Pro Angler & maybe get a show deal! Cheers, Andrew.

Hi Alun, Thanks for your offer. I definitely would like to come down in the future & would be willing to crew for anyone who was willing to show me the ropes - I'd be glad to contribute to fuel & bait. There would be a lot for me to learn not only in terms of boat handling/maintenance etc but also getting to know the best marks & tactics, so any help would be much appreciated. Regards, Andrew

PJ - No real plans to fly fish for bass, though I'm sure it could be effective in the right circumstances. Out of interest, what do you guys find is the most successful method for bass? Rob - Thanks for the trailer advice - I've got a Landrover Discovery, so should be ok for Warrior 165/175 size of boat. As I mentioned, I would like to keep my boat (when I get one!) local to Poole to minimize the distance I would otherwise have to tow. Regards, Andrew.

I'm just putting my replies together at the mo. The first time I've been asked these questions so I'm taking some time to get the words right!

Just a quick note to introduce myself. My name is Andrew Taylor & I live up in East Anglia. After several years of beach fishing, I took up trout fishing on reservoirs such as Grafham Water, Rutland Water, Chew Valley Lake, Bewl, Hanningfield etc & fished for some of the top competition teams & even qualified to fish for England. I have always had a desire to have my own boat & would love to catch a double figure Bass (Who wouldn't!). I am looking at possibly buying a Warrior 165 or 175 & would appreciate any members comments on these boats in particular & also engine size & type - I've looked at some of the threads on the forum & opinion seems very divided! (I quite like the idea of Etec's for what it's worth, but have no real experience to draw upon) Also, I would probably look to keep my boat trailered & in a secure location close to Poole / main launching areas - Can anyone point me in the right direction here please? Happy New Year & Tight Lines to you all, Andrew Taylor

A chance to blow away the cobwebs and a blast from Cobbs Quay to Southbourne on flat seas. The boat was anchored up and the bites came every cast the big rod with 4 squid was being ravaged by dogs and but didn't get the bite I was waiting for unfortunately. A procession of whiting pouting and dogfish made for an enjoyable day out on the light rod. Heard on the VHF about someone who went overboard at Langstone they were recovered and sounded OK but not pleasant at this time of year. A fast run back to Cobbs with a whiting for tea, better than cold turkey!

I'm not afraid of wielding a spanner! I built my last Landrover from scratch & am in the process of designing/building a propane injection system for my present Tdi

I've been fishing this for the last ???? years from charter boats. The last 3 on board Shiela's promise. This will be the first year for me aboard a private boat. For what it's worth..... we had the second place cod on our boat last year which was only beaten by an oz or 2. Get this, it was caught about 1/2 a mile off Ballard!!! We started much further out & moved in over the day as we got battered I can't remember a good year!

Hi all had a cod with a tag this is the report on it........... Report from the tag (CEFAS) the FVHalycon was chartered between January and February 2007 to work off the southern coast of england to carry out a series of FSP surveys of cod in the eastern channel, with the aim of identifying important locations for spawning cod and determining post-spawning migrations. In all,229 mature cod(>50cm) were tagged with plastic markers tags ( Howitts) and released in the vicinity of there capture. The mean length and weight of released cod was 66cm (+_ 7.50 cm) and 3.9kg (+_1.33kg) respectively. Additionally 104 cod were dissected to determine maturity etc. Although as much information as possible was gathered to map the fishing area (seabed type, maturity, sex, stomach contents and age) confirmation of the existence of spawning aggregations proved inconclusive at this early stage. It was not possible to determine whether the cod caught in the fishing area constituted a group composed of many distinct individuals, or simply if the cod were migrating through the area. Released 30-1-07 tag No 939035 50 46 290 N 0 38 056 E Eastbourne length 68cm weight 3.8kg Caught 12-12-07 needles length 78cm weight 13lb 10 oz Few other bits of info says that ............ A minimum length of 50cm will ensure that all cod tagged will be mature fish capable of spawning. looking on the chart of there stomach content 90% of them have crab in them.

Seems we aren't the only ones with gear probs. Setting out from Cobs on sunday the forward gear didn't engage very well but we only went about 100yrds before anchoring up to fish. It wasn't till we decided to move that we found we couldn't get forward gear. Reverse was no prob. I lifted the engine cover (it's a 3l mercruiser 4cyl petrol) to find where the cables come in. Luckily enough they are right ontop of the engine. It looks like a cable comes frome the remote to a linkage then down to the leg. They looked like they were moving ok but not transfering to the leg cable? There's what looks like a smal damper on the linkage. The remote is also past it's prime! Where do we start???? I managed to get forward by some adjustment on the linkage which only just lasted the day.

Cheers for the welcome roll on the new year have not done much fishing down your way but looking at your fish list and records seems to be very good thanks again steve
