Penn Servicing Glasgow - Announcement Dear all, It is with great regret that as of 17th December, the servicing facility for Penn here in Glasgow, will close. As of mid January 2009,Purefishing / Shakepeare UK in Redditch will be the parts and service centre for ALL Penn products. The full details are as follows; Purefishing / Shakespeare Company (UK) Limited P.O. Box 1 Broad Ground Road Lakeside Redditch Worcs B98 8NQ Tel. No: 01527 510570 Fax. No: 01527 500007 Any URGENT problems arising in the time between 17th December and 15th January should be addressed to; Mick Simons 33 Farleigh Rd. Pershore Worcs WR10 1LF Tel. 01386 552 949 Mick should only be used in the most urgent of cases - he only holds a very finite stock of parts! Please hold off on sending reels for any routine servicing until Redditch gets up and running. Obviously, as Glasgow will close on 17th December, I would recommend that no items should be returned to me in the run up to that, as I cannot guarantee that I'll have time to work on them. I realise that this is the second time in 12 months that we have changed details following the aqusition of Penn by Shakespeare K2, but needs must, and I am sorry for any confusion or problems this further change will cause. Unfortunately, I will not be a part of the new service department, but I am confident that you should not notice any major changes. On a more personal note, I want to say that it has been a real pleasure working with you guys over the past 9 years, and I hope that I have been able to help a few of you with one thing or another along the way! Cheers to one and all, Ewen The Penn Reel Doc 12th November 2008 PS. You may not have heard the last of me just yet!!!

Would anyone like to spend some time on board to show us how to use an Anka Yanka proficiently? Especially where the water is deep and rocky .... Please leave telephone number or other contact details. Here's the deal subject to good weather, availability and getting another anchor. We offer a free fishing trip bait and lunch included .... start from Cobbs Quay.
-
Why bother with antifoul at all??? You might not need it, seriously... We had a swinging mooring at Salterns - and what that meant was a lot of growth. Plus a lot of seagull droppings. The engine speed halved in 1-2 months, then we would pay a minor fortune to get the boat out of the water and pressure wash it several times a year. The pressure washing then results in knocking off bits of GRP that result in further repair costs. Not to mention having to regularly wash off sea gull droppings... Cobbs Quay offer a really good deal on dry stacking which looks like it will be much cheaper and a lot less cleaning. So far Cobbs Quay have been very good at dropping the boat in the water quickly and we are impressed .....

All Many thanks for all the helpful posts. The main problem may well have been not putting a trip on the anchor. The other I suppose is how to use the Anka Yanka better.... How do you choose which side of the anchor to go when driving forward? Assume the wind comes from the port side. Then the warp would be in a curve - and the apparent position of the anchor would appear more to the port that it actually is.. so potentially you could go over the anchor - or too far to the port of it...

Our boat is Antares 6, weight 2 Tonnes, Length 6.5 metres. The anchor is a 11 Kg Bruce Claw shackled at the top with 7 metres of chain - and we have an Anka Yanka. We always have major difficulty with a rocky bottom or when the water depth exceeds 15 metres. Please could someone advise on: >> What kind of anchor we should use and how it should be set up? >> How to deal with an Anka Yanka when the anchor is well and truly stuck. ========= This is our experience. Anchored up over the slates in 25 m depth with current running at about 2-3 knots. As the anchor would not come up, we tried to drive over it. (Not sure if the anchor stuck due to wrong anchor type, or having the chain and shackle attached to the top rather than the bottom.) As the warp went under the boat there was a risk of fouling the prop. So we tried to pull some warp in. The current was pulling the warp under the boat so strongly, we could barely pull in any warp in at all. So we decided to deploy the Anka Yanka. We drove forwards at 45 degrees to the warp at 4-5 knots as per instructions.. As the warp passed the rear deck, an attempt to recover it resulted in a broken boat hook. We eventually got the warp and held it to the stern with a short length of rope to prevent it going under the baot and fouling the prop. The boat started to to pull round in a circle. We ended up putting too much strain on the stern and there was serious risk of the stern being pulled down whichever way we turned. The boat was being pulled in one direction by the engine and by the current in the other and it was not even possible to turn the boat in any direction to reduce the pressure so the warp had to be cut. Given this experience, I wonder if an Anka Yanka is as safe and useful as we thought......

glorious weekend perfect for fishing only 2nd time afloat this year! however bass still eluded us. after speaking to 2 separate fisherman on the slip both had good catches using livebait. can anybody suggest what type of livebait apart from mackeral which seemed hard to come by. used to be able to purchase live sandeels on poole quay but have never gathered them myself so have little knowledge how to go about it. tight lines paul + maria

I am new to the forum and thought I would introduce myself. My name is Steve and I have a Pirate 21 which is kept at Cobbs Quay in Poole. I was always a keen fisherman as a younger man and now that my family is older I have decided to start fishing again. I am particularliy keen on wreck and reef type fishing and would be grateful for any advice on all aspects of fishing around the coast from Poole to Weymouth, and the IOW and offshore. many thanks Steve

Hi All, New to this forum business, & have joined the club, but need to get in touch with Bob to see what's happened about a membership number. Indeed it is Bob's old boat, & buying her's been the best thing I've done for ages - absolutely brilliant, & some great fun fishing already. (Bit of a windy summer mind you - perhaps I ought to resume windsufing). Hopefully I'll be an active member, stacks of fishing & get to meet everyone before long. Charlie.

I'm going to spend 3 days in my boat off Swanage and the Purbeck Isle next week (weather permitting!). Hoping to fish for bass, conger, bream, rays and possibly tope. Any suggestions or recomendations on marks to try would be greatly received. Thanks

Needles - St Catherines Deep and Utopia
Member Removed replied to Member Removed's topic in Trip Planning
Hi Coddy, Thanks for your post. We're Launching from Lymington and will be heading West around the Needles. The Solent fishing guide is some help and has given us a start point but it doesn't name the marks so not sure which ones it's actually showing from the ones referred to on the forum and of course the red points cover quite a large area. Mark -
I'm hoping to head out to the needles in my boat this weekend (if the weather holds) but having never fished there I'm not sure where to fish. Having done a fair bit of research on the forum there are lots of references to St Catherines Deep and Utopia but where abouts are they in relation to the Needles? Are there any Marks in the vicinity of the needles might worth trying? or should I just head out there and see where the boats are all fishing?
-
A diver friend was telling me about an old oil exploration rig he dived on some time ago behind the Needles. Apparantly it was last used in the 1970's and may well be worth fishing over. Anyone tried fishing it? Does anyone have a location / GPS co-ords for it (or what's left of it)?
